I bought one of the H8’s for my Grandson who is studying for his Tech license. Until then, he can talk with me on the GNRS frequencies. I did all the programming for him. I was overall very impressed with this radio. So much so, that I bought another one for me. I won’t get it until the first part of August. I may need to buy one for my Granddaughter as she seems to be showing an interest. All the best…. DE N0FB… 73
WOW!Thank u for that video. I had gotten 10 of the TD-H8. I LOVE'EM. I highly recommend getting the NAGOYA NA-24J Antenna them to paired together really gets out really really good I use them all the time for comms. I live in Oregon cost range & I get Anywhere from 3 too to 6 miles all day depending on the terrain and the old growth Timber
I got the 1st gen of this radio and it is a pretty slick radio. I've been really enjoying it myself. That USB-C charger feature which the 1st gen doesn't have I bet is pretty handy. Thanks for another great video Mike! 73
Hi Mike, Thanks for saying hi at Dayton. On the radio, just a thought...the battery can fluctuate its voltage, so you might want to connect it to a dedicated power supply for consistency. If the battery starts to fluctuate, it can screw up power output readings. Ive had it happen. But that is a really cool radio. Also bring to your attention, one of the mfg's just brought out a quad band...6, 2, 220, and 440 ht. Its around 200+ ish. 73s, John, N8SGM.
Can you boot it into GMRS and test the output on the upper channels and see what is the most it would push? Curious if it would be different than using the frequency in Ham mode.
@@fishgaming8599 man I'm not sure if you or he is going to see my reply or your tag. A couple weeks ago he shadow banned me for posting how to condition a battery.
@@fishgaming8599 I am glad you can see and reply to this. Maybe I am unblocked or it is not retroactive to older posts. I ended up getting this radio and the GMRS worked great.
I bought one from Amazon, I returned it the next day. I think it was the first generation. So I’m ordering the Ted-h8 ham 2Genration from china but it won’t arrive till August 4 I think.
Good work, Miguel! Have you got the Quansheng UV-K5 yet? I know HayHay has been doing reviews of it. I just bought one for $12 plus shipping to the US & A. I'd like to see how that one works in Tejas! Keep up the good work, 73!!!
Could you boot into GMRS mode and run the power test again? I asked on Amazon what’s the difference between the Ham and GMRS versions of the radio. The response said GMRS is power limited by the firmware and by being supplied with a different antenna. We’ll, I have a gen1 Ham, a gen2 Ham, and a gen1 GMRS. They all have the same antenna.
Contrary to popular belief there is actually a difference in the real world between 5w and 10w in my own experience couldn't make contact with a guy on 5w and went up to 10w and made the contact
My 2 HAM units are very similar to what you have. Except at high power in MURS band =11.5 watts. GMRS high power 3.5 watts. My co-worker bought the GMRS version of this radio and it puts out 10.1 watts in the GMRS but after unlocking it only puts out 3ish watts in the 2-meter band and MURS.
I received mine and been attempting for 3 hours to get it to connect to my phone. it keeps saying it has a bug in the program odmaster and needs to reinstall after it is fixed, reinstalled 6 times same update finally got it connected still issues which their support is working on
I received one today, not happy. When transmitting and touching the battery, it has very bad feedback. When not touching the battery, there is no feedback. Waiting on the manufacturer to respond if there’s a fix. Seems some other people have this issue and some don’t. I hoped I would get lucky.
************ I just bought my 2nd one from Amazon "Black friday sale"....These are about the size of my Hytera PD782's except the buttons are smaller, otherwise these "TID-H8's are perfect little radios !! ********
Hi Mike here in the UK TidRadio will not dispatch the option of two batteries. Since the second battery is external and external batteries cannot be shipped to UK. Sucks yes . I have asked TIDRadio what if the first battery fails or I need a second battery for availability they have yet to come back to me. If they reply I’ll add an update. Thanks
I enjoy your videos Mike. It’s been a while since I became a ham but isn’t the maximum RF exposure for an HT for safe operation limited to 7 watts? Thanks. 73.
I am thinking about buying two of these and making a repeater. since there are two antennas, there is no need for a duplexer, hopefully maintaining between 7 and 10 watts. My questions are. Do you think this would work? Which antennas would you recommend? I have seen projects using Baofengs, but I would like to use these radios. The radios will placed inside a small Vault gun case that is weatherproof. Any help would be appreciated.
I haven't tried out the repeater capabilities of these radios but they are advertised to do so, so who knows? As far as antennas for this type of setup, I believe you'd need 2. I'm a big fan of the Ed Fong Roll Up J-Pole antennas for portable VHF/UHF. You can get them here: grapevineamateurradio.com/collections/radio-gear/products/ed-fong-j-pole-antennas-dual-band-220-and-roll-up Just make sure you select the proper antenna for the frequencies you want to operate. And you would want the Roll Up, not the PVC one as that is made to go inside a PVC pipe for a more permanent installation. Get em up high with a decent coax for VHF/UHF and you should be all set.
On the Amazon website there was a review that stated : Dan kublank 2.0 out of 5 stars This is a GMRS radio only! Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 6, 2023 Even though they say it’s Ham and 6 other frequency ranges, the USA version is GMRS radio only. It’s a good radio with clear and loud voice volume. Non programming since it’s locked even though they send a programming cable with it. Makes one scratch their head in wonder. Is this true? Thank you!
That's a good question. On Amazon it will say 2nd Gen in the description but beyond that, I really don't know. TidRadio did tell me that all old stock has been cleared out of Amazon for what that's worth, so you should be getting a good one.
Dear Sensei, thank you! Output power may seem unimportant, in the sense of one or two watts not making much difference in ability to be heard by other users. For this user, it more about “truth in advertising”. Anyway - as always - thank you.
Hi Mike.. . IMSAI Guy did an in-depth review of this radio also. I guess on 70cm high power you can only key down until your vision starts to get fuzzy. 73, k0ebc
I TIG welded 2 together = QUAD POWER TUBES ! I can now speak to ZENU himself from Brklyn, NY (SERPO is alot easier to reach now also) ! I've got 4 more on on the way, I'll keep ya posted....................................
Doubling from 5 to 10 is a big deal, more watts is always good, if that were not true you would not run 50 or 100 watt base stations. I find your dismissing of this as disingenuous.
That’s impressive unfortunately the last thing I need is another HT. I will be ordering one tomorrow. Thanks for the video!
Hahaha! Love it!
My wife says 10 is better than 5 all day long!
haha

Yes 10 watts do matter especially if you live in the northeast, you could use it as a hand warmer during the winter

Good enough to order. If TidRadio is watching.....AIR BAND PLEASE!!!!
You’re also using a MFJ wattmeter. Anything 8-11 watts on high power I’m considering to be within spec.

Not quite how that works. You can play with the RF exposure calculator and check it out. arrl.org/rf-exposure-calculator

@hamradiotube .
Thanks. I have a wind turbine tower At 32 ft that I am not using right now. I'll will use on the GMRS bands.
One more thing, maybe two. What is the minimum distance between the antennas and what do you put in place for potential lightning strikes?
Nice pipe dream. School up more before stepping in that pile.
Mike, isn't that the one that Hayden reviewed that puts out a spread of harmonics?
No he's been reviewing the Talk Pod.
Is the radio water resistant?
But is it clean? I didn’t watch the first video if you already covered that but that’s usually the concern with these radios.
