- Demo of hard drive data recovery. My Hard Drive Died dot Com DIY Videos - This is a complete rebuild of a hard drive, moving platters and heads as a demo. This is how it is done and I stop and show the camera how each item is moved and rebuild.
I have a lot of clients ask in the classes I teach for Data Recovery Forensics how this is done and wanted video of this process.
So here it is. Understand that I teach classes on the whole process end to end, from selecting the hard drive for a donor to how the heads work and how to move them safely and realign them. You can see those at My Hard Drive Died dot Com.
Just a hint from a video producer - always position the camera in such a way that nothing will come between it and the intended object. Much of what you were doing in this video, for example, was obscured by your arm/hand/or fingers.
When you dropped the platters a 6:16, I almost died. Then I realized that was your rebuild drive.
really, Scott Moulton is professional in his work and traning.
I finished training in data recovery with him today for one week.
I recovered 4 HDD out of 6 successfully.
I could watch you all day Scott!!!!
You are the Daddy!!!!!
Kenny from the UK.
Thanks! Glad you like them!
Did he swap the heads?
Can you upload a video how to remove the headstack assembly and reinstall it. Is it simple?
Do you need like a torque screwdriver to use the right amount of force to reseat the main screw or something like that?
Quick question Moulton, what exactly is that fan behind the drives? I assume those are to remove any form of dust in the room, so they don't fall on top of the platters, correct? For curiosity, I would like to know more what kind of fan is it. Thanks.
Thanks Mr Moulton for your help to the entire community interested in this topic. Where may I purchase the equipment such as the noisy filter the wired base you use to place the HDD the software, etc.?
You Rock Mr. Moulton :)
Cheers from Poland and MORE VIDs please couse I watched all of them, many twice, and I ran out :)
Do you need exactly the same model or can you swap plates from one disk to another one with the same capacity and perhaps an other brand or model nr?
hello sir scott, good evening! I'm new to data recovery, I subscribed and almost watched all your videos in data recovery. I just wanted to ask, what material is that you used to insert in between the heads before and after putting away the hdd heads from the platter? Answer is appreciated. thank you
Where can i buy your equipment tools for fix the HD Died and data recovery...
Do you need to torque the mounting screws when swapping the platters?
Where do you buy that tool that removes the hd disks?
Can you please link parts that you used like the cylindrical platter holder and other tools?
Thanks for this video. Great informative clip.
hello friend thanks for your very good video I understand the process and I understand that another disc is needed in good conditions to make the change. What program do you use for the recovery? It is possible to say this in advance. Thank you very much. A hug from Chile.

You need something like a deepspar or Atola
my 1tb samsung HD103UJ won't spinup, the head is not stick on the plate . after 50 sec i see a little movment on the spindle with a half ms pitch sound. whats wrong. bad motor or dead bearing ? or a burned chip ?
Also, why are you platter swapping when the problem is with the read/write heads? That's taking one problem and adding three more on top of it. You should have only moved the actuator assembly over to the donor. Only time to move platters is if the motor is completely failed or the bearing is seized and can't be freed up.
This is just shameful bad practice. Sorry to say. I really hope this wasn't an actual customer drive you were working on.
I think it was easier to platter swap vs head swap.
Maby but, you dont´t take the easy way, you take de right way i think...
Platter swap is the wrong way. Head swapping has 100x better chance of success.
Agreed. Potential problems with concentricity for any platter swap. Then alignment for multi platter disk. Platter swap is a last resort only to be used in motor seizures when it is not possible to replace the bearing.
'Cleanroom DEMO Of Hard Drive Recovery'
i would like to see this done with a hdd with 5 or 6 platters
Doug Mckinney 5 or 6? the maximum I've ever seen on a modern drive was 3 - perhaps more in the new WD helium-filled drives, but if you are recovering from one of those, too many platters are the least of your concerns.
+NetRolller3D 8 and 10tb drives have 7 platters...
+JgHaverty aren't those the infamous helium-filled drives? IIRC the maximum physically possible in a 3.5" enclosure in an air atmosphere is 5.
a voice over would be great
How Much do you think it would be if i needed to fix my WD my passport small 500gb hard drive --- the light comes on and everything it just won't spin
Where do you get the platter extractor from?
If donor drives are required and drive was from 2010 then how will any new drives exist?? where to buy or does it have to be exact I model and DCM????
My WD5000AAKS is dead.. i have another disk WD5000AAJS.. can i swap only the interior disks from my AAKS to the interior of the AAJS and recover my data?

Great info! thanks for sharing!
Dear sir
Overwriting data recovery is possible?
Please answer
can we change hard disk plate without machine its mean using hand .what is the disadvantage if hard disk plate is touched by hand i just need data is it possible?
thanks for this video .
except it's pretty blurry at times, your hand is in the way at a critical moment once and there could be some narration to really make it a lot more effective. Oh wait no again.. nice view of your arm and watch. I see movement..you're doing ..something. Narration again would be fabulous. Is that tool something that can be bought? Made?
PS at least someone tried to do one on this... I've had recording data setting on one for years that busted in the middle of playback...I might rig a clean booth and try it some time
where i can buy clean room ?? and support worldwide shippment ?
:-D
where can buy it tools
What software is this in the end?
wonderful video there
Is that official platter remover?
... or it is a DIY-tool from a "pasta cutter"... :-D
What is the name of recovery program?
What is the name of the stand you do your work on?
Salvation data HPE
Scott Moulton HAHA. That pretty much sums up what we're seeing here in this video. Salvation Data is the joke of the recovery world.
there's a speck ...right there 11:59 ..on the platter ..edited: oh!! but then again...its just a demo..GG
if i sent my hard drive to you could you repair for me ?
imaging at 256KB/s good luck with that... you will finish your image in 1.5 years
