Sweet was the band who made me love "hard rock" when I was a kid. Remember I heard "Turn it Down" when I passed by a café on mainstreet in the little Swedish town I grew up in. Never forget that moment.

I'm amazed that so many people remember this incredible yet underrated band. One of my favorites! RIP Steve Priest. It must be pointed out that even though Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman wrote the poppy songs in the very beginning (e.g. Coco, Alexander Graham Bell, Funny Funny, etc.) they also wrote some incredible rockers such as Ballroom Blitz, Blockbuster, No You Don't (lead vocals by Steve Priest), Hellraiser, etc.

Chinn and Chapman wrote the music the words where written by me in 1970,. I was the head writer for the Raspberries, Chinn and Chapman came to Cleveland, to the Raspberries camp, where Eric Carmen introduced me, They want all excess songs, I gave them 160 or more songs, Tom Petty, looking Glass, The knack, Nick Lowe and a bunch more groups got songs from me. Steve keep by to see me, he's the only celebrate that meet some of my friends. RIP Steve.

Sticking with the U.K. album versions, I go with “Sweet Fanny Adams”. It’s just stacked start to end. But the U.S. version of “Desolation Boulevard” is wonderfully sequenced, and was the entry point for so many of the band’s American fans. Hard to pick against it. 🤟

Agreed. If we went by the U.S. versions, DB would be tops, but if we're going by the U.K. versions, SFA edges out DB, for me.

I was listening to sweet yesterday completely unaware that Steve Preist had passed, so so sad. Massive part of my childhood. Loved their vocal harmonies. Brian Connolly is one of the underrated great rock singers for me, great great band. Level Headed is my favourite, Connollys lead vocal on Love is Like Oxygen is angelic, beautiful. Silver bird should have been a huge hit for the band, RIP Mr Priest, what a fantastic character and Bass player

Sweet were my first musical heroes, in particular Steve and Mick who I loved to watch on TOTP every Thursday evening. If Sweet weren’t on I was disappointed ! Mick was an amazing drummer and Stevie had the outrageous personality and was of course a fabulous bass player with a great voice, he will be greatly missed.
I find it hard to separate Sweet Fanny Adams, Desolation Boulevard, Give Us A Wink and Off The Record, all tremendous albums. I’m also partial to the bubblegum hits which were the soundtrack to my early childhood. RIP Stevie, now back together with Mick and Brian.

My first taste of hard rock came in 1973 at the age of 13 when I loved and picked up the Little Willy 45. The B side Man from Mecca gave me a taste of which direction my musical taste would go. For many years not many of my friends even knew I they were listening to the other side of Little Willy. I still enjoy both sides of that single. Man from Mecca was a gateway in a household that had strict music rules. Eventually my father gave me a copy of Made In Japan and my world of music and FM were opened up.

Thank you, Pete, for posting this in tribute to Steve Priest. I enjoy your channel very much and thank you for the hard work you put into it for us. It's beginning to be another tough year for musicians, like 2015/2016. Desolation Boulevard would top my list of favorite albums from Sweet, simply because it was the first that one of my older cousins turned me onto that started my love for this most underrated band. Give Us A Wink, Sweet Fanny Adams, Level Headed and Off The Record would follow for me. Such versatility in this band that was always largely ignored, not to mention the fact that every member of the band could sing and was exceptionally skilled with his instrument. RIP Steve Priest.

Don’t expect a Slade ranking anytime soon as Mr. P is not a fan - unlike some of us (from the UK in particular) who have supported them since the early 1970s. Posted this playlist on SoT a while back. Perhaps the nearest to a celebration of their discography that you’re going to get. Maybe of interest? :D

hey pete. you have my sincere respect for ranking sweet. first time i heard the band was 1974. 'little willy'. i was 11. dont know what it was about that song but i loved it. none of my friends did. i said something to my mom about them and she surprised me one day with a 45 of sweet. it was ballroom blitz with restless on the other side. to this very day i still remember the emotions i felt when i listened to those songs. especially that killer solo on restless. i listened to that thing over and over. drove my older brother nuts. he hated sweet. he said, 'fukin fags dude. grow up and listen to some real rock.' he forced me to listen to a singer i couldnt stand; alice cooper- love it to death. lol i was only 11. what did i know....cuz after i listened to sweet you can be assured next i was listening to 'pilot', bo donaldson and the heywoods and....'life is a rock but the radio rolled me, etc. lol anyway pete, all my friends hated sweet. i mean all of them. and i got punked forever about it. i didnt care. i loved and bought everything they released until the end. i mean seriously. who the fuck had guitar like sweet fa, burn on the flame....or into the night. nobody. one last little story for you. i only saw sweet live one time. that was in san diego 1979 with bob seger. brians vocals were awful. half way through the set brian and mick were yelling at each other in the middle of a song. then mick threw a drum stick at brian. he jumped out of the way and it hit my girlfriend, tari in the side of the head. after the show mick jumped off the front of the stage and came over to me and tari and apologized. i was like, 'dude..hit her anytine you want.' seriously though he spent maybe 5 minutes talking with us about a solo thing he was working on with rick derringer. i never heard about that ever coming to light and he passed shortly after. one of the greatest drummers in rock n roll and a super nice guy who could sing. would love to have watched him through the years if he had lived. so thanks again pete for ranking this fabulous band and for reading my boring letter......one last thing. there is one sweet song i cannot listen to. that would be.....lollipop man. fuck me if that aint some chester the molester type shit.... later bro.

Had a chance to spend a few hours with Steve 20+ years ago when I interviewed him for a magazine that never came out! He was funny, self-deprecating and very pleased with his music background. At the time he was working with some other musicians
and considering putting out some of the music which he called Steve Priests Greatest Crap!" (jokingly of course). He lived here in Southern California and when i asked him if he moved her to avoid UK taxes, he chuckled and said No, it was too late for that. He loved Motown, specifically, musical backing to the Supremes' original version of "Reflections" (he admired the bass line by James Jamerson and said he couldn't follow it). Again self-deprecating. He was a terrific bass player and a very nice man!

Thanks for doing this.... Its good to know that the Sweet where popular in the States. They where a huge band in the seventies in the UK... and Steve Priest was not just a fantastic bass player and singer but he brought such a lot of fun and glam to the band and music in general.... They could play as well as any band but they added some much needed humour as well in their presentation.... If you have a moment then just check out their appearance on Top of the Pops doing Blockbuster.... Its awesome and hilarious. They are clearly just having fun...and most likely off their heads. Steve is in silver, knee high platform boots.. a first World War army helmet.... Full on glam rock make up but with a Hitler mustache painted on.... Whilst prancing around the stage like a drag queen....Its utterly brilliant.. so funny.... and while he's miming to this amazing hard rock classic.
Steve mate... You will be truly missed.

They had tons of great songs, Ballroom Blitz etc, etc., and one I remember well and loved, was Little Willy. TY Pete for giving them a great salutation and rememberance. RIP Steve Priest.

I think it bears saying that Sweet were completely ubiquitous in the U.K. pop charts in the early ‘70s. I was born in 1969 and the band provided some of my earliest musical memories on Top of the Pops. Times were pretty rough in Britain then and the energy and joie de vivre of songs like ‘Blockbuster’ and ‘Ballroom Blitz’ made a grey nation a lot more colourful. Their outrageous clothes also cheered people up no end. I would never look down on their glam phase, those records are brilliant.

Thanks for this video(and all your others for that matter). I bought Off the Record ( with a different bland cover) and Level Headed both for 25 cents each on cassette at Woolworths in about 85 or 86. Didnt really listen to them alot until a few years later when I cultivated a more worldly 19 yr old, lol,set of ears. Your videos always cost me money because I have to go and buy the stuff again after you jog my musical memories. Keep 'em coming!

As ever interesting & informative and when I next visit my local record store, I'll keep an eye out for some of these. Cheers.
