It’s a shame they didn’t take more from the sequel. Having a more robust story mode and a customizable aquarium would’ve been perfect with the online setting. Just imagine being able to visit your friend’s aquarium and dive in it. Maybe even allow you to create tank decorations and caves for the fish to hide in. There is so much potential for this series and I hope Nintendo will give it another chance.

So no more going on land? I always loved emerging from the water in EO2 and finding seals, penguins, etc. I'm also surprised they got rid of air tanks, and the gun to calm down aggressive animals. Not all games need tension. Sometimes, just having a purely chill experience is just what someone needs. Endless Ocean was about that jam. I don’t remember picking up Endless Ocean 2 but I don’t remember that doing anything with more tension than just cataloging deep sea creatures.
The great thing about the first game is that it took advantage of the SD card slot on the Wii and allowed for custom music. Just load up some chill tunes, which today would be some bomb ass lo-fi, and just mellow out under the sea with the fishies.

    • @nicked_fenyx
      @nicked_fenyx 15 днів тому +17

EO 2 did add aggressive creatures, which upped the tension a bit in some areas. The thing is, not everybody liked that. A lot of people picked up the game wanting to have a relaxing experience, only to have to worry about aggressive sharks or harmful fish while exploring beautiful shipwrecks, etc.
I guess they could have included those things but added an option to toggle damage off in order to please everyone this time around, but personally this game sounds like exactly what I wanted. A chill diving experience. It sounds like that's the opposite of what the reviewer wanted, which makes me wonder why he was given this game to review in the first place... Oh well. The thing is this game really doesn’t feel like an endless ocean game. I grew up with EO2 and played countless hours finding all the fish, treasures, and gaining enough pelagos to reopen the cavern of the gods. Just the whole vibe of having a team of divers go on an adventure across multiple different seas, meeting up at the island or aquarium, unlocking all the different diving gear. It’s just not here at all. The controls feel different too. Never would I find myself wishing a game had floatier controls, but here I am. And yea, I get that this is more laid back and doesn’t intend for the creatures to be dangerous (even though they added Thanatos and multiple large, dangerous marine reptiles), or have scary situations, but that’s also something EO2 excelled at. When I play subnautica, I’m afraid that a leviathan will kill me. When I play EO2, I’m afraid I’ll find something in the depths that I shouldn’t. This game had so much potential to expand on a bigger story, have more unique designated areas to explore (rather than one big randomized area), have a campy yet endearing cast of characters, and have more secrets to find. Seriously, I was shocked when I started to find many of the named mythical creatures from EO2 within the first hour, having done absolutely nothing. I remember having to do puzzles and waiting for full moons and following birds across the world to find certain creatures. I don’t know. This game is certainly its own experience, but it seems far from an endless ocean game…

I love the relaxed atmosphere of Endless Ocean, and I never finished Blue World due to the fact that you could get attacked and run out of air. It sounds like the reviewer went into this expecting Subnautica (as he repeatedly compares the two), and graded the game accordingly. This isn't Subnautica. It's Endless Ocean. Relaxing dives, exploring different areas trying to identify all the fish and find all the collectibles is what this game's about. Sure, there could be more of a story mode, but nobody comes to these games primarily for a deep, engaging story. And the aggressive animals from the second game were a bit divisive - I personally didn't like them, so don't mind seeing them gone. Overall, people come to this series for the relaxed diving and beautiful scenery. And that's what this game delivers, by all accounts (even this one).
Also, this reviewer left out important details. There are additional sub-missions and puzzles that give more structure to each dive for those who want/need that. There are incentives to keep exploring. I'd recommend anyone interested check out some other reviews online. At least then you'll get a more accurate picture of what's *actually* on offer here, rather than a guy repeatedly comparing a game that's all about relaxation to a more challenging survival game and complaining about the lack of challenge.
Not the best take, NL. Thankfully, reading the comments, it seems most other fans of the series also see the flaws in this review and remain hyped for the game anyway. May 2nd can't come fast enough!

@@PauLtus_B Abzu is quite different from Subnautica, but it's also different from Endless Ocean. Abzu is meant to be a shorter, more story driven experience. It's almost like a walking simulater, visual novel type game. Sure, you swim around and look at pretty sights, but the purpose of that game is to enjoy a short, interactive story that's mostly relaxing - except when it's not. I've heard from plenty of people who loved EO, but couldn't get into Abzu or Subnautica. And vice versa. They're very different games that won't always target the same audience.
Personally, I actually like all three titles (Subnautica, Abzu, and Endless Ocean), but they feel like three very different genres to me. It wouldn't feel right to expect one to be like the others, as they all fill different niches.

Endless ocean 1 and 2 (Blue World) were vastly different games. Luminous is extremely and severely lacking in quality. It simply is a collectathon. Blue World really expanded on EO1. Salvaging was much more unique and fun. Monetary progression had a purpose: gear upgrades, an aquarium to manage, and re-opening the special final level. Now, it's spent on stickers and emotes.... Legendary creatures are so underwhelming also. Where it used to be a side quest story or mini adventure, now they're just flair tags on creaturs you swim by that are completely underwhelming.

I have this game and it absolutely falls flat from Blue World. Don't get this game if it's another Blue World you're looking for. There is no other jobs for you to really do. Yeah, you can take pictures but it isn't for any job or mission. You can get treasure, but you immediately get the money/points from it, and that's mostly what allows you to purchase emotes or colors for your suit.
No upgrades at all outside leveling up. The scanning feels.... lack luster in my opinion. You just move the camera and scan everything. No personal interaction whatsoever. No boat to be on, no island. No aquarium to build or personal ecosystem to build. I'm really disappointed to be honest. There isn't even jobs like a diving tour to see certain animals for your customer.
I personally feel even the encyclopedia you can fill out feels like a worse version. Like said you just scan the creature once, zero interaction or figuring it out. You only get a little info. No secondary or third pages to unlock for further knowledge.
I think this is good as a baby's first Endless Ocean for younger audience, then original Endless Ocean following suit before Deep Blue being the best version of the series.

I typically find Nintendo Life gives more gracious scores than I would. Most of the time, if I take the score they gave and subtract 2 from it, that's closer to how I would have scored it. Seeing them give this a 5/10 is very discouraging because I was trying to hype myself up about picking it up this week because Nintendo's release calendar has been so dry this year, and I love that the Switch allows me to check out franchises I never checked out before.
The only thing that gives me hope that I'll enjoy it is I'm the type of guy who plays Metroid Prime and my FAVORITE part is scanning everything and filling up the catalog. So maybe I'm in that tiny niche of people that loves exactly what Endless Ocean is trying to do.

I would highly recommend checking out some of the other reviews on Metacritic. NL's score is one of the lower ones for this game. Some are giving it 8s and 9s (out of ten), but most are in between the two. This review in particular left out a lot of details about the gameplay. It also repeatedly compared this game to Subnautica, when the two series belong to completely different genres.
I'm not saying for sure this game would be for you. I'm just saying it's probably a good idea to read some other reviews - if for nothing else, to find out about the features completely ignored by Nintendo Life.

This comparison to Metroid Prime is one of the most bizarre comparisons I ever read, these are two completely different genres. @Leee275 15 днів тому

@@PauLtus_B Yes I get that. My main point is that overall he must find that aspect of the game enjoyable because the rest of the game is also very great, scanning in Metroid Prime adds extra flavor to a game that is already very well done.
If I put myself in his shoes and went into another game where collecting stuff is fun but the other aspects of the game aren't, then that single aspect will not complement the rest of the experience and I overall would not have a fun time. The seasoning wouldn't be enough to make the experience tasty.
Let me provide an example, Skyward Sword when it initially came out. Plenty of people mainly playing Zelda games for the dungeons so naturally they would go into it expecting that sort of stuff in SS.
The dungeons in that game are very welll regarded, but a lot of people only found that aspect of the game enjoyable as far as the gameplay goes, since many other things such as the backtracking, exploration, lack of sidequests, and combat affected by motion controls get heavily criticized.
My comment was moreso of a warning if anything, I wouldn't go into a title if I'm a fan of said thing that is included in it but the rest of the game wouldn't be my cup of tea, and going from OP's comment, this is a game from a franchise he's not familiar with, kind of a risky move imo.
Really what I mean in the end is that one single thing should never be the main reason you play a game, unless it is 100% focused on that like Tetris.

@@Leee275 I would say in a lot of situations you cannot just cut out the "stupid bits" out of a piece of art and still have the total result be as powerful as they're often vital to make the most exciting parts work.
With that said, I do understand that someone's favourite aspect of a game might just be walking around and figuring out things about that environment. In this situation I don't quite see how the rest of Metroid Prime's gameplay elements are essential to that specific element. I can still see this working in a much less hostile game.

I was pretty much on the fence on buying this game from the trailers and sales pitches. It just seems like there isn't much to do except move around in a sandbox and read trivia.
I haven't played any of the old games, but have watched the older ones and wish this one was like the older games and had more to do or different options for people's preferred playstyle. An in-depth story mode with a whole bunch of different locations and set events as well as a narrative would be nice. They could even get creative with map design and hide creatures in nooks and crevasses to make the player explore and 100% their journal as well as let the player replay chapters if they missed a creature and want to go back and find them. Some sort of defensive combat against hostile creatures would make the game more interesting and would make the sea feel more life-like and inform people on which creatures are dangerous and which ones are harmless.
From the looks of it, this whole game looks like it should be a free-dive mode in the game where nothing hurts you. A mode like that is good, but I feel like it needs more modes to make it good and worth the price tag. being able to set if creatures can attack or not would be nice. Especially in multiplayer, it would be neat if players could help each other stop large, threatening creatures or simply choose to nope out of battle while another player deals with it.
Another neat thing could be a mode or objectives in multiplayer diving, like find and scan specific creatures within a time limit. Then if you complete the objectives, you earn points to unlock new cosmetics, emotes, etc.
Maybe areas on land would be cool as well? Maybe you can have a beach house that you could customize with furniture and show other players or you could simply walk along the beach or go to an aquarium you can customize and add and remove fish to show off the ones you've scanned?
Maybe have extremely rare fish that show up on certain days, certain times, specific seasons, or during specific types of weather in game?
I'm probably going to skip this game since there doesn't seem to be much to do.

I guess I'm just gonna fire up my Wii and replay blue world until luminous drops in price substantially or I can get it used. It honestly seems so disappointing compared to what cane before it😢

So what I'm gathering here is: this is basically an interactive aquatic Wikipedia game that they charge $50 for? Honestly, I think I'd rather play Buzzy the Knowledge Bug on Windows XP!😂

Having dangerous fish aggro you in EO 2 was literally the best improvement made from 1 to 2 why would they change that😭😂

    Thanks for the review
I was on the fence because of its price, graphic, and online play

I was gonna get this, but if it looked more like Abzu,it would be better. There seems to be almost no plant life.

As someone who played the first two, I wish there was more to this game, they took away a bunch of stuff from eo2

Honestly feels great to play an endless ocean game again! Played 1st and 2nd game. Less scary and more just relaxing. I have talked it up to a lot of my friends who need something to help with anxiety. But have been honest with others whom are more geared toward an game like Subnautica. They want action and story and lore! Excitiment and this game is not that kind of game.
Outside from missing out on the aquarium and dolphin training. I feel this edition nails the endless ocean vibe and themes. I love it to pieces even after playing four days straight!
You described this game extremely well. It’s appricated. And agreed. This game is not for everyone. It’s defiantly a chill vibe. Not for action, but for relaxation! Appriacte your video!

I preordered it a few days ago after watching some trailers for it. I am still looking forward to playing it. It's kind of a letdown that there isn't much to it. But all I really expected to do was see some sea life. But some kind of singleplayer missions would have been nice. Like maybe collecting some of the animals for stuffy. Getting pictures of them for money. That kind of stuff would be fun.

I’d get this but only on sale.
