I just completed this job. I am fairly mechanically inclined but no professional. This job took me 13 hours to complete. I would not recommend doing this yourself unless your a professional. Pay somebody you'll be happy you did.
I've got the 08 kluger in Australia. Same car. Had my water pump replaced about three years ago by a mobile mechanic in my driveway. He'd never replaced one before, told me that Toyota say it's an engine out job. 14 hours book time from memory, I might be wrong. Rang his mate for some guidance, had the job done in about 4 hours. He said that Toyota would do it engine in too but charge the full book time for engine out He used to work at the dealer. Good mechanic.
This video, among others, helped me through this job. Great video and has all the steps need for a shade tree job. Not to difficult but would not want to do it again in my driveway...
This job is unpleasant. Great video! If you are not experienced, this could take you an entire weekend. I did a 09 Venza 3.5 water pump in about 7 hours on the ground, but it was dead of winter and 27 degrees. I think I charged $900 for the complete job. Shops were giving her estimates of $1,700+. Not many choices when it blows in the winter.
@@bradleysmith3963 You will miss more than a day and hope you get it right. Sunday morning calls are always entertaining by people that need to get to work Monday because things didn't go as planned.
Thanks for your video it was very helpful, I used a rubber strap wrench from harbor freight to grab the pulley to get the four bolts out, that was the only mystery I had to figure out maybe I should have read more comments lol.
Save yourself time and headache and just raise the engine. It’s 2 motor mounts and one support bracket and raise the engine from the oil pan. It is an extra 30 minutes but will save you hours and give you a ton of room. I’m sure this guy did the same but did not show it in the video.
my radiator is not staying topped up. wen i get home from work i always hav to top it up with about half of half a cup of coolant. is yours staying topped up?
Sorry I just saw this question. Yes you are correct that one bolt is the worst part of the job. I kept playing with it and finally was able to work the bracket and bolt out together. I believe I went between the AC lines. Sorry I can't be more help...
I just did this, once you get the thermostat manifold off the upper hose and lower pipe with lots of wiggling and cussing you can get it out with that one lousy bolt with some difficulty.
Hello, have you done same job on Lexus RX350 AWD? I have seen many videos where guys are jacking the engine from passenger side slightly to get a better access
I just did an RX350 Lexus and for some reason there's even less room especially getting that front bracket bolt. I didn't film it but I ended up drilling a 1 inch hole through the inner fender to remove one of the bracket bolts through. Plugged it with a plastic cap afterwards.
Hi I am about to tackle this with my 08 Highlander base model... That one bolt is the killer and noticed you eiggled it thru the AC pipes.. Did you have to at all dent the wheel well a bit or did it actually come out with that "wiggle" thru the pipes a bit? Thanks so much what a video..
Yes the one mount bolt is the worst part. On this one I managed to wiggle it between the ac pipes. I've found that for some reason some are a little less room than others. Good luck.
also for all 2008 Highlander/Kluger owners replace the rubber oil cooler pipe and VVTI oil pipe, these parts were recalled and Toyota will replace for free with metal part as they can burst and lose all the engine oil
@AA-ou8kl yes and Dorman sells the stainless oil cooler pipes if you can't get warranty on it. I believe there is a time limit in North America or at least Canada
Mr Bailey how do you rate the 2008 highlander and if you think it’s worth buying at 180000km!!! ♥️🇨🇦 is there any other issues I should ask before buying!!!
They are pretty reliable in my opinion so long as it's been maintained properly. Try to get maintenance records. Since it utilizes a timing chain instead of a belt there is no routine belt replacement required. Water Pump is a challenge on this. Have it checked over by a reputable tech, scanned for codes and road tested. Good luck
Thank you for your video. I managed to convince my friend not to tackle it himself, because it was going to happen in my home shop and I don't want his Highlander in there for six months. Currently the estimate from the shops here in Eugene Oregon is $850-$1200 to replace a water pump. How does that compare with what you would charge? By the way excellent video editing, you managed to get that whole huge job into 9 1/2 minutes and didn't miss a thing. Thank you so much for taking the time to do that.
I charged 4.5 hours labour plus $220 Canadian for parts. Total of $660.00 plus tax. The book time to do this is generous as it includes dropping the engine out. Hope this helps you.
Parts around $220.00 includes water pump, thermostat, coolant and thermostat seal plus 4.5 hours labor. I charged my customer $750.00 CDN. Hope this helps.
didn'tshow how the aluminum housing and water pump pulley how to remove, you just need to remove two 10mm nuts from the rear cylinder head front plastic cover, the aluminum can remove between the rear cylinderhead and thermostat housing with two rear bolts with it. about the water pulley 4 bolts ,just need to put a pin to a hole between two of the pulley bolts to lock the pulley. I need to replace the belt tensioner too, need to remove the air conditioning pump and alternator.

Just had this done on my 2013 Highlander v6. Total cost for replacement + coolant flush was about $1400 at my Toyota dealership.

For that kind of money I can definitely afford to miss a day of work to fix myself

Hi Phillip how did you remove the bracket.... wiggle through the AC Pipe without raising engine. Thank you great video
I dont remember exactly how I managed it but it was a pain. If I recall I tried raising the engine but it didn't help. Good luck.
@phillip that one 6 inch bolt that gave you trouble is killing me. Can you tell me specifically how you got it out?

Not too sure but around 200,000klm.
How did you pull the bolt out the mount after you got it between the ac lines ? I cant get mine out 😅
It's a bitch for sure. One bolt has to be left in the mount as you remove it. Sorry wish I could remember witch one.
How many hours should this job take please? Or rather how many hours should i expect a shop to charge me for ?
I charged between 4 and 5 hours.

What is your opinion on Aisin water pumps?
I haven't had any issues with them so far. I believe they are the OE supplier for some import manufacturers.
