Pressing your own cooking oils can be incredibly simple with a home oil press. Although a variety of seeds ranging from pumpkin and hemp to peanut and walnut will also work, MOTHER EARTH NEWS editor Hannah Kincaid uses sunflower seeds and a Piteba Oil Press to demonstrate the process of how to use an oil press as well as a few tips and tricks along the way. Hannah is sure to give you a head start on the pressing matter of making your own expeller pressed oil.
More on Cooking Oils from MotherEarthNews.com: You can grow sunflowers, pumpkins, peanuts, hazelnuts, and other plants to make cooking oil from their seeds. Some nuts and seeds contain more oil than others - for example, almonds, hazlenuts (filberts), peanuts, sesame seeds and walnuts have an oil content of more than 50 percent. Be sure to use oilseed varieties of sunflowers and pumpkins, which have an oil content of about 45 percent, for best results. Visit the link above for more information.

Even though there's a flame, the maker of the press specifies that the oil will only heat up slightly (to about 40°C/104°F). This will cause more oil to be pressed out, while still qualifying as cold-pressed. If you have tropical temperatures, you don't need the flame.

The highest temperature allowed for “cold pressed” oils is 120•F.
It’s great to see so many people appreciate the back to basics techniques.

Thank you for sharing this amazing thing! I always thought getting into making oils would be so expensive. I just bought a quality non-electric seed press just now after watching this video. I prefer old school tech over electronics when available so am super happy right now! I'm going to try to make some coriander oil among many pepper oils to start off with. Time to experiment! The gifts this year will be very fun.

Be careful, when it comes to basic machines like this almost all of them are Chinese junk that is re-packaged / re-branded and sometimes even re-painted or re-finished to look different when they're all the same junky Chinese tier nonsense that breaks after two uses. They're often repackaged and claimed to be from different countries then given absurd prices in the $50-250 price range when they're all clones of the same machine that cost about $1-2 to produce and sells for $5-15 all day long on (I can't type it without getting flagged for spam, ALI baba and the forty thieves plus the word EXPRESS) - this drop ship price gauging is how Chinese megacorps rip off westerners. At this point, for example, Chinese knock off ear protection with in built mic were $27 until a year ago, now they sell for $250. 3M Peltiers that the military use, $300. They will gradually increase the price as long as silly round eye will buy it.

Just double checked, I was right. It's the same design / type that has been floating about the last ten years. Except they gave it a coat of paint and stencilled 'PITEBA' onto it. The welds have somehow gotten WORSE since the last time I checked with the top hopper point and heat mount point being tack welded. Also that heating element is stupid. That wick is absurd. That's not going to be effective. Just use a candle.

COOKING with seed oil is NOT good for the body.
All seed oils are quite high in polyunsaturated fatty acids that can cause inflammation and toxin accumulation in the body. On top of that, when exposed to high heat or reheated multiple times, these oils can turn toxic and cause greater harm to the human body.
The body needs natural saturated fats like olive, coconut and avocado oils or butter, bacon grease, or pretty much any animal fat.
Since seed oils contain high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), they aren’t the healthiest pick for your health. A healthy human should only have about 2% of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the body but it has been observed that on an average we have about 20-30% of PUFAs in the body fat. In such a situation, if you consume more PUFAs in the form of seed oils, it is obvious that the amount of toxins in your body will increase.
Excess of PUFAs might also expose you to the risk of cholesterol, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s and obesity.
