From 85 - he retired, Larry played with a broken back that would lose its structural stability. It would lock up in abnormal positions. He would have to get adjustments just to be able to play. Sometimes going straight to the hospital after a game. To spend the night in traction. That's just one of the injuries that he played with. He didn't even use any pain meds, shots, etc. for any of his injuries. Yet he was still able to dominate and put up stats. He was the FOUNDING member of the 50/40/90 twice. He led the league in 3 pointers twice 85,86. FIRST 3pt contest winner in 86 then 87, 88. MVP 84 , 85, 86.. 2 Finals MVPs, 12 All star, 10 all NBA Teams, 3x All Defense selection. All in 13 years. It took Bird just two seasons to get his first ring. Larry turned the Celtics around his first season. From a 29 - 53 season to 61 - 21 season. Larry's one of 8 hall of famers to win rookie of the year & be named to the all NBA first team. The only one so far to have those honors after Larry is Tim Duncan. Larry Bird is the only player to win Rookie of the Year, League MVP, Finals MVP, All-Star MVP, coach of the year & executive of the year. Larry is the only player Jordan couldn't beat. 6 -0 playoffs; 17 - 11 reg. Here's some of his highlights.

It's not a debate, Larry's the best basketball player to ever step on a court. Magic could do nothing better than Bird. Don't kid yourself about "skill level" then, compared to now. Players in the 80s-90s could go. Just as athletic, and arguably MORE skilled. They didn't allow palming, carrying and traveling back then, like everyone gets away with now. Now, it's more "street-ball" than basketball. People view that as being more "athletic" and "skilled." Give Bird today's training and medical technology and he'd tear it up. A tall forward sharp shooter that can pass as good as a lot of guards and has eyes in the back of his head. A guy with a mental toughness only rivaled by Kobe and Jordan and a confidence to demand last second shots. He would probably not be the best player in the league, but with the lack of physicality on defense, he would definitely and consistently be top 3-5 every year.

For me the one thing that sets Bird above the rest is that he did everything he did while being slow and not very athletic. If he was as fast and as athletic as his opponents then his performance would have been out of this world.

Magic and Larry were about even in the passing game. Bird was a better defender. Bird was a better rebounder. Bird was a much better shooter from anywhere on the court. Bird was a much better free throw shooter. And Bird had the killer instinct. And Bird was better than ANYONE in clutch time!

Bird is better than pretty much any modern player. Look at his 30 year old season vs Lebron's 30 year old season. Bird wins. Bird dominated in one of the most talent rich eras of the NBA ever. His injuries DESTROYED his longevity but even then his career stats are insane. He averaged 10 boards a game for his career as a SF. His passing was also insane considering he wasn't bringing the ball up the court. You guys are SLEEPING hardcore on Bird. In today's rules where you can't touch him? Are you kidding me? Jordan would average 40+ per game with his eyes closed. Magic and Bird would cook all these soft players in todays league easy.

The thing Bird could do more than anybody I've ever seen was make people look silly. With the fakes, the trash talk, etc. He was like no other. Not saying he's the GOAT, but in his prime he was as good as anybody. He could do whatever he wanted. John Stockton recounted that in his rookie year Bird walked by their bench and said, "I feel like 43 tonight". By mid 3rd he had 43pts and pulled himself out of the game.

I understand the Magic sentiment. The dude has more championships and was a baller no doubt. Larry did more with less help on his bench for sure. Both were amazing greats and in my top 10 all time.

I love them both. To be honest Bird did have Magic with the outside shot. Magic did work on his outside shot and got great at it. Bird and Magic pushed each other. When Magic was diagnosed with HIV. Bird was the one who called him. When Magic retired at first. Bird really did not want to play without him in the league. Magic did not want to play on the dream team without Larry. Some dont know. Larry actually hurt his back at home shoveling gravel. Bird would have to play the end of his career with a hatd plastic brace on. He still beat MJ. The players of this time you do not see them play hurt like the OG"s did. Much more physical game back then. Refs would put their whistles in their pocket. The last part of the game these guys played hard. Shot out to all the former players. I watched that era of the games. Boy was it great. I hardly watch it now.

Bird and Magic are linked forever in the eighties. Either the Celtics or the Lakers were in the finals every years. Three times they played each other. Lakers won two of the three but Magic had slightly stronger teammates. Bird was the better shooter and his passing and court vision was right up there with Magic. Bird's trash talking was second to none and MJ says everything he knows about getting in the head of another player he learned from Bird.
The more you see of Bird the more you will love him. K.D. is a great player but he is no Bird.
