If anyone wants a $100 toaster , I suggest the Breville A Bit More Toaster 4 , model # BTA730XL. No bells or whistles. Easy to use. Robust. Can fit artisan bread slices ( only two instead of 4 regular). Doesn’t try to connect to your phone or internet. I have 2.
Breville,is a terrific company! I’ve owned a Smart Oven for at least 5 years and since out stove died last year, I use it exclusively for any type of baking, toasting, etc. Yes, I do,own a couple toasters (have no idea why?) but the one I really like has two long slots that take any size bread and works perfectly!
Our 1958 Sunbeam with direct measurement radiant control makes perfect toast, one slice or two, first or a dozen later, automatically lowers and raises. I doubt this one will make it to 2025. The logic is well implemented, though. The "second slices quicker" function is almost certainly done indirectly by charging a capacitor than measuring discharge rate to shorten the time. Simple and reasonably reliable.
It reminds me of all the tape cassette players on the market today of various prices that use the same exact tape playing mechanism inside, regardless the price of the complete unit. I bet you the internals of this are identical to that of any $10 toaster aside from a screen and a little motor lowering the bread. Judging from the screen when it's "off" when at a 45 degree angle, it looks more like a capacitive touch panel with glass in front to make it seem like a fancy LCD display.. that would explain the issue with it recognizing your swipes.
We purchased one almost identical, except ours is all black and has a lever instead of the automatic lift. Same brand and same touch screen, at Walmart for $50. We've had it about 6 months with no issues yet.
Go to Target and get a wide slot toaster. Or maybe even a 4 slice. This costs too much and not even doing full brown to edge on week 1. The more bells and whistles, the faster it breaks. Not EVERYTHING needs to be a computer.
I'm following your channel for a couple of years now and this is one of your best videos ever! Only thing that could've been added to the video is more of what you noticed during use. Like does the toaster has a sound feature when it's done? Or how easy is it to clean?
It's funny because the Sunbeam Radiant Control toaster from the 50s could raise and lower automatically. Plus it would adjust the cooking time when it was still hot. I can't believe there still aren't any companies using their design. Luckily, you can still find them around and there is even a company dedicated to refurbishing them.
I love how James always uses lvl 1 and when it doesn’t come out midnight black he’s like “bro wtf does this thing even work?!” 😂😂😂😂 why would you put it in at lvl 1 expecting lvl 7 outcomes??????
I wouldn’t go so far as to make that assumption, since there are varying degrees of reasons (why) people will invest in certain products. I once read an article about a person who sold their expensive car to a total stranger , for one dollar, it was a young teenager who was looking to buy his first car, and he thought that it was either a joke, or that something was wrong with it. It turned out to be her ex-husband’s car that (she) was selling for (him). She had found out that he had been cheating with another woman, and thus got her revenge. What I am trying to interject, is that you should refrain from passing judgment on something that you may disagree with (based) solely on Upon (your) personal opinion. People spend money for things that are pertinent to their personal desires and interests as well as life styles. Think about it, haven’t you (ever) saw something, that touched you in a way that made you desire to own it even though it was out of your price range? But you couldn’t get it out of your mind, and you rationalized in your mind (how) you would incorporate it into your daily life? Well, that is (human nature) at its best, or worse.
I bought the KETIAN Automatic Electric Digital Toaster 2 Slice toaster. It did cost $30.00 more than this one. But it has lasted for over a year with daily use Very simple to use and also will keep your toast or whatever warm up to 30 minutes. The screen is like this one, hit or miss on the touch. Great review on this toaster.
Something in the back of my mind says that the electric toaster was the first successful small kitchen appliance, dating back to the early 20th century with those manual one-sided ones. Fascinating how this little appliance continues to generate innovation. Great video! PS--I use the Breville and love it for around $175.
Maybe after reaching the highest toasting level, do one more toast at level 1 - it would be interesting to see the difference in the level 1’s Oh thanks for showing 4 from cold and hot !
one thing I like about him is that he mentions that he is cleaning and washing food related products before using them. most other reviewers just unbox it and use it straight away
Rather buy a good condition vintage toaster for $100 but honestly you can prolly find em cheaper than that. Some of those sunbeam ones are super nice and they’re built to last a lifetime
I don't necessarily agree it is a nice looking toaster it does have that smart toaster aesthetic and look without the ultra high price tag of a true smart toaster it also has that wide stance like our other appliances like our air fryers and pressure pots and stuff like that it's a pretty nice looking docer and the nice colorful LCD screen is nice to look at Is it ultra functional? Yes and no it's basically a toaster with a bunch of buttons with LED lights but they've replaced the LED lights with little pictures I'd say it's a halfway decent toaster for the price if it lasts and if that's the aesthetic you're looking for
Funny thing, my step grandmother wouldn't eat her toasted bread unless it was burnt to a crisp from edge to edge, corner to corner. She said something like it was the only way she could taste it. 🤷🏽♀️ idk. But I always found that odd.
My sister likes her food burnt to charcoal. Except roasted marshmallows, which is weird because I love roasted marshmallows that have caught on fire lol
interesting that the bagel setting toasted both sides of the bagel, my toaster only toasts the cut side when bagel is selected, you do have to put them in so the cut side faces the middle
They have those "laser guns" that measure temperature instantly from a distance. Why can't we have those sensors on cooking appliances, including toasters and ovens? Also, we could have appliances with open source modifiable software and plain color LCDs with touch screen, so we could mod (or download mods) our units to suit our needs. I'd like to be able to make my dishwasher run a little longer, for example, or dry better, or have a couple extra steps added to my laundry since I'd rather make my machine soak my clothes a few times for a couple of hours during the washing cycle if I am doing laundry while I sleep etc.
The laser is just for aiming at the object to be measured. The temperature is detected by an infrared sensor. They're neat gadgets, and inexpensive too.
@@marcse7en Thanks and true but they don't include those sensors, plus a camera for color, to do what technology is already capable of very affordably if there's will. Same with ovens and microwaves etc.
My toaster is from 90's made by Cuisinart model CPT-2 that has same thing it has 3 levels that can be program for time, plus has defrost and keep warm. It also shows time, and it is changing if you do one after another. Up to now is working great and my toast does come even. Is wide slot so good for bagels and other things. Yes, it was expensive. that time but already pay it self-long time ago. Funny part is that I can't fine any pictures or information for it.
Im impartial to these new "smart" appliances. The design is cool...but my cheap hamilton beach toaster ive had 10 years does the same thing lol the toast levels on my dial are just minutes i think. Idk sometimes it sparks from within but only used it like 20 times, still works. With bagels too!
I've had several air fryers in my time, upgrading and none have given good toast, and you don't have to keep an eye on a toaster you put the bread in, and it pops up when you want it. In less time than an air fryer when you really need it before shooting off to work.
From my experience appliances that have a somewhat unresponsive touch screen don't last. I had a Crux air fryer bought at Macy's during a Black Friday sale, it had a somewhat unresponsive touch screen, broke down in less than a year, a 100 bucks down the drain. I bought a Bella air for air from Best Buy with the two-year replacement warranty. So far Aunt Bella hasn't broken down, I believe August or September is going to be the one year mark.
I live in a small apartment and didn't get a toaster. I put my bread in the oven on broil and have to flip it / watch it, but I still haven't had any desire to get a toaster. Especially when I see the uneven toasting and vertical lines of in toasted bread. Of course those don't matter from a taste or texture perspective, but it looks ugly. I suppose the ones with spring loaded side gates that cradle the bread in the middle makes it better.
One thing about this impresses me and that's that all the Browning levels are usable. Most toasters half the levels are inedible. I'd eat level 7 from this toaster. I've never understood toasters that ruin bread on half the settings.
8:44 Maybe excessive for toast, but based on the shape of the toasted area, that I’m guessing it’s due to the fact that heat rises and that the bread slices are probably slightly wider/smooshed on the bottom due to sitting like that in the bag, I wonder if you’d get a more even browning if the slices were placed in the slots upside down so there is less surface area to brown in the cooler areas at the bottom of the slots and the wider base of the bread, that’s now at the top of the slot where all the hot air is escaping, would get toasted by the rising hot air that’s hitting the exposed flared base of the slice.
You know, good yout7be contender, use a mini oven, (does 4 toast) put a bit of water in between toast, in heatproof mini cup(or silicon mini cup). It does the same thing as those steam toasters. Once water gone, oven cooks , (steam, till water gone) then toasts. .
I’ll take my 4 slice T-fal Advante Deluxe with reheat and bagel setting. It toasts bagels on inside and just heats the outside up and of course it toasts bread.
A lot of people here say "ah I don't need a smart toaster," and in most cases, that is true. The thing about having a "smart" toaster is really the feedback; the toaster "senses" what's going on with the bread and adjusts accordingly. This is why James tested all of those slices of bread in different states of temperature--this is to test how the toaster's computer can detect the changes in temperature and then decides whether it needs more power or less power. Something like this would be good for if you have different bread preferences and you want consistent toast whether you just pulled it out of the freezer or it has been on the counter for a few hours. As for why the browning isn't even throughout the bread, I do think the bulk of the cost comes from the "smart" features and everything else is standard toaster components. In my opinion, this is why this model is *only* $100 because the engineers and manufacturer used as many off-the-shelf components as they can, and decided to put their efforts in the control unit and the overall design of the appliance.
Disappointed that you didn’t demonstrate the muffin test, since it was the most unique feature on the toaster. How many appliances do you (know) of , that (offer) that feature?Everyone is familiar with how (toast ) is prepared. Seeing (that) feature would have fared well with the toaster, and would have played a huge role in whether it would be beneficial for purchasing, due to its high price. That would have been nice indeed. I also would like to say, that I am an avid fan of your site, and have purchased several items based off of your test results and conclusions.
I had one of these and it broke within a year. The heat from the toaster itself messed up the electrical stuff in the toaster and eventually it quit working.
For toast I'm a level 3 to 4. any more and it's charcoal. I bet someone out there watching this is dying to get Doom running on this toaster. James how did the other smart toaster you reviewed break? I have a 4 slice basic toaster that I paid maybe $25 for and so far it still works. I have another 4 slice toaster from the 90s that still works but the brown level lever is broken. It's going to the shop for repairs.
I think the swipe issue is that there is IR sensor to detect if someone is standing in the front or not. you can see a red light blinking. Maybe you have to stand infront of it for it to work properly or swipe your hand over the sensor maybe both
Im pretty sure there is an IR sensor on the front that detects motion or an object near it so that it can prepare to receive touch input. Operating it from behind didnt trigger this sensor. So that os why the screen sometimes wouldnt go on. I doubt there is a situation where you wouldnt approach it from the front in normal use.
You can get more even toasting in a toaster oven (with convection), don't have to worry about bread size or number of slots and you can use it for pizza and such which would make a burning mess in this expensive brick.
Out of the smart toasters ive seen, this one isn't bad for the money, I really like the differences between settings and 7 isn't charcoal. Id call that a win lol.
I mean, it's a cool concept, but it certainly isn't perfected yet(how it isn't yet is beyond me). I like my 12 year old Oster toaster that I bought for abour $25-30 at Target, it works and does everything I need... granted, it's been a bit shabby lately and I likely need a new one... for $25 every 12+ years or $100 for a "smart" device that likely will break, crack, blow up in smoke, screen stop working, etc... that's the catch, I suppose!
The big factor with a toaster is the types of bread just cheap Walmart bread toast way differently than other breads, I suggest in the future when reviewing toasters maybe try one other type of bread or maybe even two other types
For that amount of money it should be composting the crumbs on its own and cleaning itself after every use. It's also missing two more slots which is totally non-negotiable.
Swiping the screen seemed to be hit and miss. However, you were mostly standing behind the toaster. I'm wondering if you were in front of it with the screen facing you, would that improve the swiping?
was surprised you didn't test it lvl 7 with a single piece of bread . Since u read the instructions saying it would brown more I thought u were foreshadowing to a test later on
I do like how you can sit that against a wall. Most toasters I hate figuring out how to sit it aside when not in use. This way there is only 1 way, if my ramblings makes sense lol
Spending that much on a toaster is... idk. I would 100% take the Breville 4 toast item over this. BUT I don't think I could justify either lol. Something about having physical buttons is more appealing to me. Newer cars that have touchscreen switches just don't do it, I want to know when I can be controlling it without having to look at the screen.
That multiple swipe issue on the screen is enough to make it a hard no, Thanks for the video.
Hmm. Wonder if it is a cat safety feature? But human frustration.

I have 2.
@@7-ten same reason I have 4 TV’s … sometimes one just isn’t enough
I have a Breville toaster oven that I've had tor 10 years. Love Breville.
I like my regular toaster, without the timer. The jump scare when the toast pops up is a thrill my boring life looks forward to. 😂
Haha, it's the little things
I've got a cheap Walmart special toaster that I have used for years with absolutely no problems so I'm good.
I almost feel people who use above 5 may need to seek help 😳
Burnt toast! 🤮
I like it a lot and would like it even more if it had a variety of pop,up jingles to choose from
My toaster was about 8 euro. If it breaks, I just buy another one. It toasts bread just fine.
Your logic is sound.... Just too bad about having to throw it in the trash every time.
@@2K8Si Mine hasn't failed though. Regular toasters are pretty simple. If it does, I'd only be out about 8 euro, though.
I bought a cheap $15 black and Decker toaster almost 15 years ago and it still works perfectly
Me too!
5:28, sir, if I paid a $100 for a toaster, yes...yes I will in fact be picky that this toaster is not toasting evenly.
Ill keep my $30 toaster that ***gasps*** toasts my bread perfectly.
Only a sucker pays $100, $200 or $300 for a friggin' toaster.
What I am trying to interject, is that you should refrain from passing judgment on something that you may disagree with (based) solely on
Upon (your) personal opinion.
Great review on this toaster.
can you do a video using pop tarts i always have a hard time finding a good toaster for then
I eat them at room temperature as is haha
I asked if it has a Pop Tart setting? ... Actually, I tend to eat my Aldi frosted strawberry knock-off Pop Tarts, called Top Twists, cold! 😋
@@k8lynmaeMe too! 😋
Something in the back of my mind says that the electric toaster was the first successful small kitchen appliance, dating back to the early 20th century with those manual one-sided ones. Fascinating how this little appliance continues to generate innovation. Great video! PS--I use the Breville and love it for around $175.
Maybe after reaching the highest toasting level, do one more toast at level 1 - it would be interesting to see the difference in the level 1’s
Oh thanks for showing 4 from cold and hot !
one thing I like about him is that he mentions that he is cleaning and washing food related products before using them. most other reviewers just unbox it and use it straight away
Rather buy a good condition vintage toaster for $100 but honestly you can prolly find em cheaper than that. Some of those sunbeam ones are super nice and they’re built to last a lifetime
Summer is coming. Would love review of portable ice machines
For only $500 one can make 6 cubes of ice on the go every 40 minutes with a portable generator.
The automatic time adjustment is pretty neat, it makes me curious if that was impacting some of your previous toaster tests.
this is for people that like donating money to big corporations for no reason at all.
People with more dollars than sense, friend.
@@7-ten indeed
I like my Revolution so far…
Same people when they have people over, first thing they need to do is show them this new modern “thing” they got.
I don't necessarily agree it is a nice looking toaster it does have that smart toaster aesthetic and look without the ultra high price tag of a true smart toaster it also has that wide stance like our other appliances like our air fryers and pressure pots and stuff like that it's a pretty nice looking docer and the nice colorful LCD screen is nice to look at
Is it ultra functional? Yes and no it's basically a toaster with a bunch of buttons with LED lights but they've replaced the LED lights with little pictures I'd say it's a halfway decent toaster for the price if it lasts and if that's the aesthetic you're looking for
Funny thing, my step grandmother wouldn't eat her toasted bread unless it was burnt to a crisp from edge to edge, corner to corner. She said something like it was the only way she could taste it. 🤷🏽♀️ idk. But I always found that odd.
Nothing odd about that, because that is an age old secret amongst the elderlies of the (old) world. It is still practiced in some parts of the world.
My sister likes her food burnt to charcoal. Except roasted marshmallows, which is weird because I love roasted marshmallows that have caught on fire lol
Its cool that you can see the adjusted time when one batch finishes.
interesting that the bagel setting toasted both sides of the bagel, my toaster only toasts the cut side when bagel is selected, you do have to put them in so the cut side faces the middle
I have that toaster it amazing only complaint is bagels never completely toasted
It is a good thing the screen does NOT light up at the slightest touch. A deliberate, strong touch is best against accidental bumps.
He was way to easy on this. For 100$ I would demand 100% even browning perfection every time. This thing is just a fancy 20$ toaster.
Toast is toast, I really don't much care about a $100.00 toaster. Thanks for the review anyway.
For that price it better also do my taxes, otherwise I'll stick with my cheap toaster oven that I've had for the last 20 years.
How many reviews do you have in queue before doing Ronco reviews?
I want to see Ronco reviews!
I want to see Ronco reviews!
I have a 24 year old toaster works fine In my RV I have one that was my mothers I think its about 50 years old both do as they should brown bread .
I like how he flicks off everyone when setting the toaster.
Mainly I'm skeptical about the longevity of the screen.
I'm pretty fine with my $8 Walmart toaster lmao
I had one of these and it broke within a year. The heat from the toaster itself messed up the electrical stuff in the toaster and eventually it quit working.
Regular toasters have an electronic timing circuit which controls a solenoid. The solenoid releases the lever after toasting, and the toast pops up.
Maybe you have to stand infront of it for it to work properly or swipe your hand over the sensor
maybe both
Im pretty sure there is an IR sensor on the front that detects motion or an object near it so that it can prepare to receive touch input.
DANG THAT EPIC BAILEY CATCH WAS SO FREAKIN AWESOME 😲
Always trust your reviews more than the ones on Amazon's website!
I don't eat a whole lot of bread or waffle or bagels. I do like the toaster reviews and testing of all the toaster.
Out of the smart toasters ive seen, this one isn't bad for the money, I really like the differences between settings and 7 isn't charcoal. Id call that a win lol.
Very thoroughly reviewed! How much did Bailey get?
I mean, it's a cool concept, but it certainly isn't perfected yet(how it isn't yet is beyond me). I like my 12 year old Oster toaster that I bought for abour $25-30 at Target, it works and does everything I need... granted, it's been a bit shabby lately and I likely need a new one... for $25 every 12+ years or $100 for a "smart" device that likely will break, crack, blow up in smoke, screen stop working, etc... that's the catch, I suppose!
Good thorough review! Seems like a fairly decent toaster. I guess time will tell.
O'boy laying his toast out on the table in Illuminati symbols
The big factor with a toaster is the types of bread just cheap Walmart bread toast way differently than other breads, I suggest in the future when reviewing toasters maybe try one other type of bread or maybe even two other types
For that amount of money it should be composting the crumbs on its own and cleaning itself after every use. It's also missing two more slots which is totally non-negotiable.
I’ll keep my Breville BTA730XL. It’s the bees knees lol. Great review like always.
Curious about how the muffin feature works. Given there is no muffin shaped slot.
It's for English muffins 😂
@@mclovin6039 that makes more sense. Here I was trying to figure out how that would fit.
Swiping the screen seemed to be hit and miss. However, you were mostly standing behind the toaster. I'm wondering if you were in front of it with the screen facing you, would that improve the swiping?
For some reason, I actually like that toaster, good job my friend!!
It's an interesting one. I'm hoping it holds up!
was surprised you didn't test it lvl 7 with a single piece of bread .
