    Cleopatra

    - | LYRICS |-
    Symbol and a secret
    Ancient Queen of Egypt
    Once revered like Isis
    Reduced to a temptress
Gone are tales of her mind
    Coiled in gold serpentine
    Sands of time have entombed
    All she was is assumed
    A phoenix of her day
    Dominion in her veins
    A wise and knowing sage
The strength to hold her reign
    Beyond her beauty
    In his story
    Beyond her beauty
    Tell me her story
    Last of all the pharaohs
    Queen so known and unknown
    Egypt’s Queen at eighteen
    Many tongues she could speak
    Stabilized her kingdom
    Beloved by her people
    Defined by her lovers
    Not success and power
    A phoenix of her day
    Dominion in her veins
    A wise and knowing sage
The strength to hold her reign
    Beyond her beauty
    In his story
    Beyond her beauty
    Tell me her story
    Defined by her lovers
    Not her sway and power
    In the politics of Rome
    Gifted philosopher
    Mother and warrior
Led a fleet in naval war
    Withered to her sex life
    Snaring men with her eyes
    Watch her power disappear
    Queen of guts and glory
    Lost in a male story
    Of his fantasy and fear
    A phoenix of her day
    Dominion in her veins
    A wise and knowing sage
The strength to hold her reign
    Beyond her beauty
    In his story
    Beyond her beauty
    Tell me her story

i love that karliene did this for cleopatra and also elizabeth bathory. i knew cleopatra was actually not too revered for her beauty, but that she spoke many languages and was likely the most well educated person on the planet at that time with all the subjects she studied as well as access to amazing tutors and scholars. the romans, however, wanted to demonize her and reduce her to nothing but a beautiful temptress, and this image of her they projected still stands to this day.
i’ve never really seen anyone stand up for elizabeth bathory though. actually, i read the same thing about her so consistently that i figured what they said about her bathing in virgin blood had to be true. but karliene’s song “bathory” forced me to reconsider that. only after listening to it did i find a romanian scholar that believed she was falsely accused. we have to be careful what we believe about female figures in history, because so much of it is overwhelmingly written by men.
thank you karliene for giving these historical women some credit and justice. i love the message they send as well as your voice!

Bathory is a difficult one to study. But from what I have been able to discover is that. She didn't take shit from anyone. ua-cam.com/video/oUNonHQ4Nc8/v-deo.html&ab_channel=iilluminaughtii does a deep dive.

This is very true. It's fascinating to read up on the real woman behind the Roman propaganda. A revered, intelligent Queen reduced to a one-dimensional, wanton temptress is really kind of ridiculous. It's sad how long this image has stuck, and I hope one day we'll get an awesome movie or tv series that explores who she really was.

Men have always loved their mothers, wives, and daughters just as much as women have. Society has not been designed throughout history to suit the greed and misogyny of men. It's been designed by necessity with the goal of protecting loved ones. There was no feminist movement in ancient Rome because one wasn't needed or wanted by anyone. The second women were able to safely expand their roles in society they did so. Only people with an ideology to support try to say men have always oppressed women just because they could. A healthy mind can see that women were protected. As for rumors or slander, women talked just as much as men, and men listened just as much. They told stories both good and bad about both men and women. When you come out writing narratives about evil lying men attacking women for being women you're only revealing your own angst towards men.

It’s like the women find you to represent their truth in song. There are theories that Cleopatra’s beauty was actually fairly average but her wit and powers of communication and charisma were boiled down to “they paid attention because she was hot” instead of her commanding the attention with her message and her self assurance. She wasn’t powerful because she was hot, she was hot because she was powerful. Your song captures how his story has so thoroughly wronged her and I love it. You are brilliant song writer and musician and I want to thank you so much for sharing that gift with us.

There's probably a truth to that "she was hot because she was powerful".
Cleopatra was strong, intelligent, witty, and charming, by all non-Roman accounts. Charisma and confidence have a strong allure.
I think a large part of the "she was hot" stuff comes from the Roman depictions of her. They always portrayed her as an evil temptress who bedeviled good, upstanding Romans like Caesar and Antony, bent them to her will with her feminine wiles.
And obviously, a seductress like that would have to be hot, right?

This feels so accurate- it’s like Karliene is channeling these women with her powerful songs. I’ve also heard that Cleopatra was more known for her intelligence and charisma than her looks, and I think it’s just easier for some men to say ‘oh that woman accomplished a lot because she’s got’, than to acknowledge that women are capable of so much more than that.

@@sindelscat9336 I actually don’t agree. There is large dialogue concerning Antony, Lepidus, and Octavian, the second triumvirate, and their military successes and eventual fracture. Cleopatra is objectified as a piece on the board, rather than regarded as a player with the same standing as the aforementioned men. Therefore, I fully support the current historical momentum towards a more balanced portrayal of history (for example, while written sources are fantastic, the status of the writer must be taken into account, as well as any biases they may have had).

@@eliselestrange-lannister1156 there really isn't a large discussion, there are a few historians that do talk about Antony, Lepidus, and Octavian's military success, but it is often rarely discussed by historians, and rather documented by records. When it comes to Cleopatra on the other hand, it just takes one search to find articles upon articles of her accomplishments. Infact there are even articles that mention only her and what she had done. So to say she is often objectified is an untrue statement.

I would love to see your take on Gráinne Mhaol (there is a great song about her by Miracle of Sound, but I would like to hear about her in your style), or about the conversation Mhaol had with Queen Elizabeth I. Or Marie Curie, or what I would like to hear is your take on "Mary, Did You Know?" Because that song is whimsical (and beautifully sung), but tends to make me furious. We never hear what Mary thinks of her baby boy dying on the cross. So many women to sing about. She discovered a 1,300m tunnel that the Egyptian government described as "an engineering marvel". Within was found over 1,500 busts, coins, and other relics.
The vast hidden underground complex led to the mediterranean sea and several sunken structures. Work is continuing done there now.

When I first read this song's title and saw the thumbnail I was a bit weary. There are a lot of adaptations of Cleopatra VII and most of them famously reduce her to a sex symbol or some kind of evil temptress (often both), though considering the wonderful "Blood Countess" (one of my favourites) I felt somewhat safe to expect at least a certain degree of nuance...
Nuance I got and I have found that I have quickly become quite fond of this song.
It paints a very nuanced picture of Cleopatra VII which as a student of ancient history I appreciate a lot. (Though it does maybe overshoot a bit at times, but that's fine.)
The lines I like best are probably (in order of appearance):
"All she was is assumed" - because it's sadly very true, there is no such thing as unbiased accounts of her. We struggle through stories of her and practically frankenstein a patchwork of what her history might have been
"Queen so known and unknown" - basically same as above plus the added fact every child knows her name with (usually) only a very pop-culture based knowledge of her
"Defined by her lovers/Not success and power" & "Defined by her lovers/Not her sway and power/In the politics of Rome" - explanation below
"Lost in a male story" - explanation below
"Beyond her beauty/Tell me her story" - because we don't *have* her story. Just other people's stories that happen to include her because they met her at some point
I think I like this so much especially because, like many ancient royal women, Cleopatra is often reduced to little more than a stylised plot device in the ancient sources, a tool for the given author's agenda - generally showcasing specific traits in the men she comes in contact with (Caesar and especially Marcus Antonius) and frankly, the amount of topoi she gets laden with gets ridiculous in some cases. Because they're not writing about the person Cleopatra, they're writing about a literary construct bent to fit the narrative they're building - generally to make their main character look good or bad (they don't just do that to royal women, just look at how every ancient Alexander historiography paints a notably different picture of him and his elites depending on what the author is trying to sell)
It's a problem we face with many ancient royal women, be they Olympias of Epirus (mother of Alexander III, more commonly known as "Alexander the great"), Atossa (mother of Xerxes I), Livia Drusilla (wife of Octavian Augustus) or, here, Cleopatra VII (last of the Ptolemaic dynasty of Macedonian rulers of Egypt established by Ptolemaios, one of Alexander III's generals - his naval commander, if I recall correctly). (Not that later women in positions of power had it necessarily easier.)
Especially when they are (as we see often with the ancient Greek authors or the much later ancient roman authors) written about by authors from distinctly different cultural backgrounds that don't necessarily understand the actual cultural distinctions, roles and spheres of actions these women moved in.
And in case anyone wants to do some further reading on the topic: may I suggest anything by Elizabeth Carney (the historian, that is, not the novelist) on the topic of either an ancient royal woman in particular or ancient royal women in general. She's one of the leading experts on the field.

She is one great educated and intelligent woman. Nothing can beat that. Super rich too. However, she laid not one but two married men. That is where I have my problem. But then she’s like any powerful politicians. She is powerful enough to do what she wants. Both fascinating and hateful.

I wonder how Cleopatra would react to this song if she were standing right here listening to it? If I were to sing a song about her, I think I would start with all the things she truly wanted to be defined by. From my understanding she was an incredible woman but limited by the world of men. When i come across stories of her or even historical accounts, i hear lots of speculation but not enough facts. Some accounts of her are done with tremendous hostility and even contempt. I really wonder about those telling those stories with raised eyebrows rather than her when i hear them.

@@Karliene Oh! How about someone less well-known? Queen Aahotep. Though she wasn't technically a regnant queen, being the regent for the child-king Ahmose I who founded the 18th Dynasty, she was a mighty queen in her own right. She preserved the Egyptian state at a time when it was on the brink of annihilation, Ahmose's father and elder brother both dying in battle after overthrowing the overlordship of the Hyksos kings in the Delta and possibly even personally leading the defence of the royal palace itself against a Hyksos attack. She was buried with weapons and with the Gold of Valour, the highest military honour of ancient Egypt. She was also the first to hold the title of God's Wife of Amun, the most powerful female religious office in Egypt - this from her coffin lid so it may have been post-mortem, but thats debated. It was the office of God's Wife of Amun that would pass to the famous Hatshepsut which would give her the political power as regent herself to become a regnant queen of Egypt. There might not be enough there for a song, i guess, but I dunno. It's a story that needs to be better known about I think.
