It is interesting when she is talking about her experience in Hamadan she says a Muslim, rather than an Iranian, gave her the directions. It is obvious she sees the people as identified by their perceived religion, rather than any other parameter, such as nationality. I think if you ask an Iranian "what are you", 10 out of 10 times you'll get: "Iranian".
+DerafsheKavian I think when you go to any nation which is almost exclusively homogenous in religion and ethnicity and you happen not to fit that profile, you will refer to people that way as well. To be specific, she was talking about the differences between the Jews in Iran and the Muslims in Iran. They're all Iranian. The only way to discern is their religion. Iran makes VERY sure the religious identity is always present.

George Lurye you are so wrong about how Iranian perceive themselves and you truly need to educate yourself before you write such nonsense about how Iranians perceive themselves. You can't dress how you want, you can't eat what you eat, read what you want or even *think* how you want. Iranians in Iran are not at all Muslims by choice.
She is a religious (Jewish) conservative and sees things through that lens. It's almost impossible to expect a rational/secular view of a society by a religious person, for instance to think that there could be atheist/agnostic Iranians, or that the people on the street could be Bahaii, Zoroastrian, Christian, Yezidi... For her, you're either Jewish or non-Jewish (in this case Muslim)!

There are more Holy Jewish sites in Iran then there is in Israel. Iran is a beautiful country and the people of Iran are so respectful and Nice. I would love to visit Iran!

Come over to Iran then. it's very easy. remember to talk to some iranians before you come about the places that are nice to visit. I suggest you go to north and there's a town called "Sarein" in which you get to swim in natural warm springs in winter in pools with no ceilings while it snows heavily on your head!

It's Interesting that Jews can practice their religion more freely in Iran compare to Sweden. Kosher Butchers and restaurants are banned in Sweden but they operate freely in Iran. This is one the things that western media will never share with their audience because it will contradict with the negative image that they try to picture of Iran.

I too have an Iranian background, my parents are Iranian Christians and in my Iranian family are Iranian Muslims and Iranian Jews and I love them. I'm proud of our Jewish communities in Iran and would love to see them one day. But I know this, all my Iranian "Muslim" friends and family members have nothing but respect for the Jewish community and you are right, the Persian and Jewish mentality is really closely knit.

A Canadian friend of mine traveled to Israel not long ago , but just because he has Arabic/Islamic sounding name, was questioned and scrutinized at the airport for hours, and was told to avoid traveling to certain cities or areas.He said heavy military presence everywhere, made the trip very Unpleasant!

Iran, while being a repressive regime, is not a police state like North Korea. As a tourist, you are not watched and traced everywhere in Iran. You are not obliged to have a 'translator' either.
You can confirm this fact from thousands of tourists who go to Iran, without being forced to be accompanied by a 'translator'.

My best mate in high school in Tehran and then in college and uni in the UK was an Iranian jewish guy. We did everything together, even picking girls up. I have never had anything but respect and kindness from him and his family. I hope that one day this divisive , anti Iranian regime is sent to the hell that it came from, so that we can all go back to our country and our roots. It is not the Sikh Khanda but a relatively new Iranian symbol, dating from 1980, as explained in the Wikipedia entry on "Emblem of Iran".

Keep in mind that, like you said, you were accompanied by a person from the Foreign Ministry the entire time. You were not able to freely speak to Iranians and get a feel of how many Iranians actually feel, which is that many are perfectly okay with things like gay people and western culture. Obviously, they aren't going to say that when you're accompanied by a government stooge.

I agree with everything except that she said that Iranians do not seek another revolution. Perhaps this was the case 8 years ago when this interview was done, but after the 2019 Aban-protests, and especially the 2022-2023 Mahsa-protests, the vast majority do want a revolution and regime change.

At times it seems she doesn't know what she's talking about. Iranian PEOPLE are not afraid of "Western disease" as she puts it (around 10:30). The ruling class of course are, but the everyday people (especially in large cities) want a secular democracy that respects political and social liberty of individuals, parties, groups, etc. And they DO want to be connected to the rest of the world and all that...However, they believe such major changes can only be attained by the Iranians themselves (which means absolutely no foreign intervention/aids/etc.) She might view this as nationalistic, but it is not. It's actually pragmatistic. Democracy is something to be achieved by the people, not something to be dumped onto them. History has shown this repeatedly.

A translator is not required , u can just do what ever u want there , Iran as free as any european country once u r inside u may chose or not to have a translator , u can chose to go and stay in any hotel u want and u can take photos or talk to anyone u want , Iran isnt like North Korea in which tourists are restricted to government predetermined destinations like Pyonyang , DMZ , model villages and cant take pictures of poor people etc . Except for maybe Military installations etc u can go wherever u want , talk to whomever u want , take pictures of anything , stay in any hotel etc , go to any city , town village. Just check other documentaries and u will find out what I said
+Muhammad Saeed Western journalists always have a "translator" with them. None of that is made up. Every single documentary film shows the same as well. Are you a western journalist? Are you one of the translators? How would you know who was and who wasn't with her? She's not just a tourist. She went on a journalist visa. That's why she was allowed to enter even though she's been to Israel and why she was invited to the Supreme Leader's home.
