Decided to level a Prot Pally a few weeks ago and wow it has been so much fun and i like tanking again. My main is Havoc DH, but depending on how they feel in 10.0 I might be switching to Prot as my main.

Phial is terrific for damage output. Hook's decent, but not as consistently good as Phial. Kyrian's great for M+, they would have to buff Venthyr to an insane degree for it to compete with the consistency of Kyrian!
Thanks! For the most part, the best Legendary slots will be a function of your gear. Getting 4-piece bonus and maximizing item level are the most important things to emphasize. High-budget pieces and slots that get a guaranteed socket as a Legendary (such as helm) tend to be ideal Legendary slots, as long as they don't create any conflict with equipping tier. Rings are decent Legendary options because there's less friction with other gear. If the gold cost of re-crafting Legendaries is a concern (and it's definitely annoying even if gold's not a problem), belt and ring are pretty safe, high-impact spots.
@@WoWatNight thanks for the reply even months after the video. Just gearing an old pally I made as my first toon when I started the game back in season 1 of shadow lands. It's the opposite faction but I wanna prep for cross faction content 😄
As a DH tank for season 1 and 2. Not real high keys but we were working towards 20s. My paladin is 10 ilvls lower and I already feel tankier and doing similar damage. I think I'm making the swap now. Only thing I miss is my chains lol
Yeah, big time. Doing runs on a 255+, fully SoD-bis'ed out VDH this week and comparing to a Kyrian Prot Pally that's at least 10 ilvl behind, there's no comparison. Prot Pally blows VDH away in terms of tankiness, and the group utility is arguably in Pally's favor, too. Mobility and cooldown package are VDH's big advantages over Pally, and neither are anywhere as important in M+ as in raids. With full tier bonuses and double Legendary, VDH will gain a lot of offensive and defensive juice in M+, but right now it's feeling R O U G H.
How relevant is this atm? This will be my first tank I’ll be making. I’m deciding on either prot pally, blood DK or bear Druid. Which one would you say is most alt friendly and for self healing (forgiving). And lastly for m+ dps?
It's still largely accurate on the Pally info. Blood DK received a hotfix early in Patch 9.2 that significantly improved their potential DPS once they have the 4 piece tier set bonus. It's generally regarded as the best tank in both Mythic+ and raids right now, and for good reason. Blood's damage output is A+, the survivability is A+, it's really strong right now. Bear has fallen off a cliff. They were doing well in Mythic+ -- not raid -- and then they got a big nerf that hurt their damage everywhere. Pally has pretty much held steady. It's a good class that deals a lot of damage and has solid self-healing. It has some survivability concerns at the upper echelon of key pushing, but in the majority of content it's really, really good, and the group utility is unparalleled.
It was extremely good for its item level prior to Patch 9.2. It got slightly nerfed, but is available at higher ilvl now, so that tends to offset. In general, it's very good for DPS, like a more M+--friendly version of Phial of Putrefaction.
Way too long of a rampup to be useful for on-pull threat, which is the main spot threat matters. It's for single-target DPS purposes only, and it's very mediocre there.
That’s mainly because most of the stuff talked about in this video is from end game content in shadowlands, although the covenants can be accessed early if one char already levelled normally through the first time.

What do you think about the Codex of the First Technique and Slimy Consumptive Organ? I like the organ's heal and wanted your thoughts! Great content and subbed!
First Technique is really strong. The proc uptime is impressively high, and as long as you're consistently tanking, it will provide a massive amount of damage and healing. Slimy Consumptive Organ is not great. The healing simply does not add up to much over time, and it doesn't provide any offensive value at all.
@@WoWatNight Thanks and agree about the slimy organ however mine is 260ilvl and the heal seems to scale nicely so it's as big as an instant self heal from what I can tell.
@@warpathh Understandable. There's nothing wrong with using a suboptimal trinket as a temporary stopgap. You just hang onto it until you pick up something that offers more overall value, like an IQD, a Blood-Spattered Scale, or a Codex.
Did venthyr take a heavy nerf in 9.2? I’m looking to build a pally that will be viable for both mid level keys and pvp, which covenant would be my go to? Is Necrolord good in pvp? There’s a shockingly low number of people making videos about this, thanks for all the info. Has anything changed since the patch went live?
Nope, the nerf was to healing only, and relatively minor. It's absolutely usable for mid-level keys, it just requires a different approach from Kyrian. Kyrian goes for chain-pulling, Venthyr goes for more mass-pulls when cooldowns are up. All four Covenants are usable in PvP. Venthyr has the largest burst, but it's reliant on your teammates' CC to keep enemies in the Ashen Hallow, and the downtime on burst windows is extremely long. Necrolord's burst windows are smaller, but up way more often, and the defensive value of Fleshcraft is immense. Night Fae is a bit in between. Blessing of Summer burst windows can be really strong, depending on who you're playing with, and Soulshape is excellent, but the amount of time required to cycle back to Summer takes a couple of minutes.
Be sure you're maintaining Shield of the Righteous, standing in Consecrate, and interrupting caster mobs. When your health dips low, use free Word of Glory casts to heal yourself back up. Use Ardent Defender or Guardian of Ancient Kings when you make big or dangerous pulls.
Thanks for the guide. The only 2 things i was looking for wich absolutely no other side covered was if "Judgement of Light" was also casted by the 4piece and if "magistrat" will be a valid option. Was great to know! :) There´s only 1 point i hardly disagree with. Using consecrated ground instead of Judgement of Light is actually just intentional griefing. The ~2k hps in an M+ you´re missing is a really big deal. And all you do with it is just slowing mobs, wich should be slowed by your teammates in given situations. (Except for Necrotic weeks).
Judgment of Light's healing in M+ is not bad, but being able to kite regardless of the group comp can be useful on higher keys, especially on some of the more difficult Fortified weeks, such as Fort-Raging, Fort-Necrotic, and so on. Also, despite being against it in the video, I've been using Hand of the Protector in climbing to 3k on the Pally, and it is extremely nice. It provides more overall healing than Judgment of Light if you use it proactively. The ability to spot heal during hectic moments is good, and throwing 60k+ Word of Glory crits into party members can totally trivialize mechanics that would normally require major defensive cooldowns. The tree mobs at the start of Mists of Tirna Scithe that channel on random targets are a good example. Judgment of Light is a much simpler choice, so there's still a place for it, but it's generally just for lazy healing in raids and M+.
On the official paladin discord, night fae is considered the best paladin with 2 legendaries and the 4 piece set bonus, would like to know your thoughts on it!
Ashen hallow is 4 min and u can cancel early to allign it with wings so u will have venth leggo and hammer of wrath leggo huge 2min burst windows with ashen and wings up every 2 min . That's going to be best in raids imo
Night Fae has some positives. Soulshape is terrific, the collection of Blessings offers a variety of utility and throughput buffs that you can use on yourself or other group members, and the Legendary is a simple, effective throughput increase. Using Blessing of Summer on a Moonkin, for example, who's using all their cooldowns and getting other externals like PI can be a huge DPS increase -- but it's more useful for parsing during farm than it is for progression. The problem is that NF just doesn't really compare with Venthyr in terms direct burst of damage, which can be crucial for making damage checks. That's kind of a big reason you would bring a Prot Paladin to a raid. Their tankiness is great, but lots of tanks are tanky. Only Venthyr Pally can consistently put out face-melting amounts of burst damage. Venthyr doesn't require coordinating with another player's cooldowns to maximize its value, either. Night Fae requires a heavy degree of coordination and planning to use effectively. Venthyr provides a major raid healing cooldown, which can help with getting through tough boss mechanics. Night Fae's single-target healing increase really isn't comparable. It can be useful as a personal defensive CD of sorts, but it's not on par with Ashen Hallow in terms of raid value. Basically, Night Fae is a bit of a halfway point between the defensive utility of Kyrian and the offensive value of Venthyr, but without the same level of consistency. It requires substantially more coordination than either to use effectively, and it's reliant on other players to maximize its value. Venthyr cuts through all of that, and just deals an enormous amount of healing and damage. It's pretty great!
