Love Joan, (R.I.IP), and Mr. Boggs, you are missed on the telly'. Watching this and some of your earlier shows, (ie: Peter Allen), reminds cf of my late teens and early 20's ENJOYING life and a time when one thinks this is all "forever". You should have been a national name, Mr. Boggs, but I'm glad you kept yourself so "East Coast". Gosh, Channel 5 midday was your time slot and if I recall correctly, you would pop up on the 10 PM news with entertainment reports, (ugh, Stewart Klein & his "humorous" film reviews!). This segment with Joan looks to be early 90's, but I checked out your net' channel, and you still look great in your very recent pieces. Prosper always and much health to you alway, Mr. Boggs. You really have made me happy, reminding me of simpler, more hopeful times. Thank you again!

This has be done in the 90s Le Cirque hasn't been the "IT" place in NYC for years plus Jacques Torres left as pastry chef in 1999. If you also notice this was also when Barney's was dressing her. She looks so chic in this outfit. When Barney's was dressing her during The Joan Rivers Show days was when she looked the MOST amazing. No more big hair and puffy gowns.

What I find refreshing is that she never, ever stopped being grateful for the good things life (and her hard work) had delivered to her. Every time she put on jewellery, every time she got in a limo, every time she was recognized in public, she gleamed like it was the first time. It never grew old.

It’s interesting to consider the possible reasons why Joan was obsessed with looks, clothes, appearances and what she deemed as the embodiment of “class,” right down to learning the table etiquette of high society.
Joan wasn’t one of the pretty, refined, gentile girls of the “elite” class who she observed in the world beyond her circle. She tried to acquire those traits through plastic surgery and by surrounding herself with things she thought gave her “class” - designer clothes, fine jewelry, expensive art objects, interiors, even knowing how to use the correct utensils. One can see how seriously she took it, how she scrutinized and judged every aspect of someone’s appearance, dress and lifestyle. Notice how she assessed the man on this show, down to the length of his shirt cuff peeking out of the sleeve of the jacket.
In public, her role as a style critic was reinforced by stints on “Fashion Police” and QVC. Her public mocking of those who were overweight, poorly dressed and who lacked style or “class” was expressed with jokes and outright criticism, but are we to believe it was all in good fun rather than a genuine expression of disdain?
While there’s nothing wrong with striving to look one’s best, if a person is obsessed with the external it’s invariably due to low self-worth. Joan admitted to her fear of being overweight as she was in her youth, which is understandable, but it shouldn’t have given her a license to be cruel to others about their own weight struggles. I’m not an Oprah fan but when Joan was guest hosting “The Tonight Show” and told Oprah she had to lose weight, it was the antithesis of “class,” the very trait Joan strived to embody.
The “class” that Joan famously cultivated was superficial, a veneer, which was demonstrated by another incident - her falling out with Johnny Carson. Some people didn’t understand why Johnny was so angered by what Joan did but others got it. In a classless, opportunistic way she seized a chance to advance her career. Of course she had every right to advance her career but it was the way she did it that lacked integrity and class. She disrespected the man who gave her the break that launched her career, who repeatedly boosted her, and who let her be his permanent guest host. More than anyone else, Johnny had “made it all possible,” as she herself admitted to his face and in a book dedication during that period. The lack of consideration, thoughtfulness and respect she showed in return was the antithesis of class.
FOX desperately wanted her and therefore she was in the driver’s seat. If she had told FOX she had to run it by Johnny to give him the respect he was due, and to give him the chance to confer with his producers about a counter offer, they would have had no choice but to say okay. Then she would have been able to accept FOX knowing she’d done the right thing. Instead she succumbed to the opportunist, baser instincts of most people in Hollywood, known for their lack of loyalty and ingratitude to those who helped them when no one else would. Having observed the shadiness of Hollywood, I understood Johnny’s reaction.
In a pinch, when push comes to shove, when it really matters, a classless person proves that all the money and etiquette lessons in the world cannot bestow true class upon someone who lacks it on the inside. Give me a friend, spouse or business associate who doesn’t know a ruby from a garnet, who eats with their elbows on the table, but whose inner class and character shine more brightly than solid gold or a flawless gem.
    Class is as class does.
