There was an explosion of Canadian talent at the turn of the 70s when Canadian content regulations (CanCon) came into effect. They required that 30% of music played on Canadian radio be written, performed or produced by Canadians. Prior to CanCon, there had been a musical brain drain of Canadians to the US: Denny Doherty (Mamas & Papas), Skip Spence (Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape), Zal Yanovsky (Lovin' Spoonful), Joni Mitchell, Ian & Sylvia, members of Steppenwolf, 3/5 of Buffalo Springfield (including Neil Young), 4/5 of The Band and many others. While Gordon Lightfoot and The Guess Who managed to get a foothold just prior to CanCon, in general Canadian radio stations played it safe and duplicated the US charts, and refused to play Canadian artists. CanCon changed that and led the way for many homegrown artists to get airplay and have careers in Canada: BTO, April Wine, The Stampeders, The Poppy Family, Five Man Electrical Band, Lighthouse, Anne Murray, Murray McLauchlan, Edward Bear - and this is just the tip of the iceberg of the initial wave in the early 70s.

russallert ~Very good report!! I graduated from high school in Canada in the 1970’s. I’ll add more to your 1960’s & 1970’s Canadian musician list:: Floyd Sneed (born in Calgary, died this year at 80) as drummer for Three Dog Night :: David Clayton Thomas as singer for Blood, Sweat, & Tears :: Keith Hampshire :: Chilliwack :: Ocean :: Dr Music :: Paul Anka :: Michel Pagliaro :: Jerry Doucette :: Fludd :: Brave Belt :: The Original Caste :: Andy Kim :: Gino Vannelli :: R. Dean Taylor :: Patricia Dahlquist :: Major Hoople's Boarding House :: Bobby Curtola :: The Cooper Brothers.

Harri, back in the 1970's here in Canada our junior high school dances featured songs like this. While many of us shunned the fast dances, we loved to slow dance to songs like this where we got to 'waltz' with the girls. Waltzing for us was basically like a long hug where we pressed close, felling the warmth & heartbeats, and moved slowly in unison on the dance floor. No real dancing skill required! It made the slower ballads very popular. April Wine had many great songs for such lovely innocent but nevertheless tantric interactions. (Great memories!)

    You Won't Dance With Me
Another great April Wine song. This is a classic power ballad with a great synthesizer solo that makes it a beautiful
song. And cow bells, a staple of a great song. 🇨🇦 How about some Tragically Hip, " New Orleans is Sinking". Fab Canadian Band. 🎶💎🇨🇦 Glad you enjoyed Harri. Thanks Harri and Louie. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

G'Day Young Sir, Greetings from Canada.
I got to see April Wine opening their Stand Back tour in Halifax in 1975. We were the first to get to hear ;Drop Your Guns' played publicly for the first time.

Oh this one is a favorite of mine! I was 14 when it came out and in the throes of first love. Now, nearly 50 years later, it's a bittersweet reminder of how fleeting love is. Thanks for being the first one I've seen do a reaction to this great song. I admit it's not the best song ever written and it IS pretty syrupy. But some songs aren't great because of how they're written, sung or produced. They're great because of the memories associated with them and the feelings they evoke when you hear them. Music is the closest thing to a time machine that we have.

Great Canadian rock band. They had their biggest hits in the 70's-80's. Some of my favorites are “Sign Of The Gypsy Queen”, “You Could Have Been A Lady”, Just Between You & Me”, "Roller", "Before The Dawn" etc.

Love your reaction. You were feeling the love 😍. This is my favourite song of April Wine although they have many other great songs I love as well. I sing this song at karaoke every weekend at my local karaoke bar🥳💃🏻. I’m going to see April Wine in concert tonight at a beautiful small venue. They started the band in 1969. Amazing that they’re still touring and they still sound great! 🙌🏼

Borrowed from a previous post with Trooper but its more fitting for this reaction: reactionists are "discovering" great Canadian talent from the 70s and 80s and wonder why they haven't hear of them. The explanation is simple; mediocre bands can't survive in a small market.
