You actualy convinced me to go for substack at the very end because they dont apply as much censorship.
Thanks Zulie! I love that you give your lede at the beginning of your videos instead of trying to string us along. And that is why I watch your videos!
It's what Imy fav UA-camrs do, so I try to do it too! Glad you enjoyed :)
Thank you for your helpful advice! I’m currently trying to decide between both and you’ve helped me along this process, much appreciated 🙏✨
Zulie! I’m soooo glad I found you ! Great video I’ll be looking at more your channel too.
I was pondering this exact thing and I’m going with Ghost for sure. I do think free speech is important and I can’t believe they say they are for it and then tried to shut down a viable opine they decided they didn’t like omg. That alone is reason enough for me. Thank you so much for sharing that.
I’m nervecited to start my new page lol. Wish me luck! Can’t wait to watch more. ☺️🦋
I paused your video at time stamp 09:30 and read the statement shown on the screen.
Your observation is correct in stating that they seldom want to enforce the objectives
in the first two sentences.
Their resistance showing up in the 3rd sentence states,
"it does not include attacks on ideas.... or for other reasons."
And that is the legal weasel sentence that allows the posting
of material that makes many people uncomfortable on their platform.
There was a time when public decorum controlled our freedom of
speech used in front of a person, "I hate you because you are ugly,"
Your freedom of speech was allowed when you were hiding from view.
The internet of today allows us to hide from view most of the time.
Thanks for this informative explanation. Supporting someone as noxious as Matt Y. certainly makes me think twice about Substack.
Thank you! This video is excellent and helped me a lot!
Hi Zulie, Thank you. Good advice. I’ve heard of Substack, but I never heard of Ghost until now. I think Substack may be a better alternative for me under my current circumstances. One of the downsides to both services is that many of us (including me) are getting too many newsletters via email. It’s hard to keep up. I have to be very selective in what I’m reading.
Yep, I unsubscribed from two just this morning! It's a fair point -- know what your audience wants. If they don't want a newsletter, then figure out what else you can give them.
Thank you for sharing. Do you have a Ghost vs Beehiiv comparison? That would be good.
Thank you Zulie about the detailed information. Love your videos and explanations.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Zulie! Thanks for great video. It seems that Substack has built an ecosystem that would help discoverability and new subs. How would Ghost compete with that? Other question is could I have both or would formatting on both platforms take too much time? Thanks!
Great summary, Zulie.
I'm just here for the paintbrush microphone.
Thanks 😂
I’m curious to learn how either substack or ghost I reheated with having your primary shop website. If you’ve already for a website of some kind is it easy to integrate the two together?
Thanks Zulie! Love your content because it is SUPER helpful - could you do a video on how and where to get copyright-free stock photos for your blog and newsletters and other options for pictures.
Great suggestion!
Unsplash is one I've used. Shutterstock, but it costs.
Super good review of Substack and Ghost. Could you review the Biihive and Conver kit for the building newsletter?
I'd be interested in a comparison of Ghost and WordPress. I first approached Ghost as a blogging platform, and not for its marketing/mailing side. With that in mind, it might be a good website replacement for people who do light mail marketing but a lot of blogging. For those use cases, WordPress and its vast plugin ecosystem feels very overkill. Thanks for the video!
It's a great point! I'm not super familiar with WordPress, so I'll have to do some research, but I've added it to my list. Thanks for the idea!
Nice video. Thank you.
Another great video! Great info and really engaging communication style. 👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey, Zulie! My question doesn't really have to do with newsletters, but I would like to know if yout think publishing the same post on Medium in two different languages would be a good strategy to grow? I intend to use English as my main language on Medium, but I'm a native Portuguese speaker and I know the English Proficiency rate in Brazil is quite low... Do you think that would be an efficient approach to grow my audience?
It's hard to say as I don't know much about your audience! I also don't know how many portuguese readers there are. I know there's a spanish-speaking community, so it's possible. Look for portuguese pubs and try it!
TLDR: Substack and Ghost are both newsletter platforms, but Ghost offers more comprehensive features and customization options, while Substack has been criticized for allowing hate speech under the guise of free speech.
00:00 💌 Ghost is preferred for creators earning more, while Substack is recommended for those earning less, with Substack being described as revolutionary for its simplicity.
01:42 📧 Substack allows for easy setup, free use, and a recommendation mechanism for discovering new newsletters.
02:27 💌 Ghost offers more customization and features, including gated content and paid subscriptions, but comes with a cost, while Substack is beginner-friendly, free to use, and doesn't take a cut of earnings.
04:50 📰 Substack is the best option for beginners worried about commitment, while Ghost is better for more tech-savvy users with comprehensive help documentation and quick support.
05:55 👻 Ghost offers more customization options, subscription-based membership, and control over website appearance, making it a better platform for committed content creators compared to Substack.
07:10 📰 Substack Pro funds creators without transparency, while Substack pretends to be just a platform but actively solicits content, making it a publisher.
09:15 📰 Substack allows hate speech under the guise of free speech, leading to lack of content moderation and fired an editor for being associated with a writer who left for a different platform.
11:10 📰 Substack is a great tool with slightly questionable leadership, while Ghost is a cool but more complicated tool with more customization potential.
Thank you very much: I will now look for your video about Ghost and Medium. ... A question: Does Ghost let you manage 2 (or more) newsletters on different topics ?
I believe so but am not sure!
how do i add a video room to my website using ghost? i have no coding experience!
how can I move from substack to ghost without losing my content and just keep working?
I just started a substack newsletter. Working on free articles and then soon paid.
It's a good plan! Best of luck.
I wish I watched this video first. Actually, just getting started, so it would be easy to switch to ghost. I am looking at substack as a marketing tool. It's one of my funnels. I am also thinking about creating a publication on Medium called Social Confidence Evolution. I am going to publish my free podcast and you tube channel with script on these platforms. My goal is to link to my Mighty Network, where I will have a course/community teaching and supporting those who want to become socially confident.
Zulieeeeee....help....I attempted to import my Medium articles to my Substack. It worked...but not just my articles came over. The zip download contained EVERY comment ever made on my articles as well as EVERY comment I've made since joining Medium. Luckily I've only been there since June of last year, so that only puts me around 800 items to manually delete instead of 8000 I'd have a year from now. Do you know of a way to Mass Delete posts from substack?
Omg no this sounds like a disaster! Your best bet is probably reaching out to Substack's support. Sorry to hear this!
@@ZulieWrites Hey Zulie. It had disaster written all over it for a morning. Then I found a big ol' delete button. Luckily I had no other items in there that I wanted to keep, so mass delete it was. Thanks for replying.
@@therealjohnnyb2151 Did you just delete everything? I'm having this problem too. Over 3,000 comments. OMG, it will take me weeks to delete all this!
@@ArtisticMysticSoul I did! At the bottom there was a delete button. I'd just started, so all comments being deleted was acceptable. But if it were years into it and lots to keep it may have been a big decision
@@therealjohnnyb2151 Thank you! I did that too. I figured it would be easier to recreate 400 posts than to delete over 3,000 comments. Still a lot of work, but not much choice. I'll take my time to add and update them. No rush since I've saved them.
That was not the misinformation, Zulie. The data is in and continues to come in.
too many choices today, too many choices!!! 😅
Is the email adress already included in ghost, can u choose the mail name?
If I remember correctly, they'll automatically assign an email address to you, but you can always change it to your own domain
Switching from substack, yep it works limited time and their policies will force you out.
Hi Julie,
Does Substack support PayPal or Payoneer ?
I believe they go through Stripe!
So which one should new user start writing on? Ghost or Substack?
Id recommend substack for total beginners - simpler and free.
It is $9 if you have less than 500 subscribers, and it gets progressively more and more expensive as your subscriber base grows
Presumably at that point you're earning more money though, so it works out!
@@ZulieWrites - This is what I call "A nice problem." It reminds me of a time that a good friend of mine and I were talking about taxation (which I don't mind). He agreed and stated his goal was "to be taxed $1 Million dollars." He just smiled and said, "Because it means I made it." Let's embrace our "nice problems" that show up when we are successful!
I see bringing on that Matt guy as a marketing tactic. The way you talked about it didn't make it seem underhanded or disingenuous in any way so I'll have to disagree with you there.
Coming from a business perspective and mindset, bringing on other people to use their pertussis/ service is all marketing strategy to attract more users to the platform. I don't believe it was anything nefarious whatsoever.
Businesses do it ALL the time. Every time you see a celebrity on a commercial (for a product they don't own themselves) they've been paid hundreds of thousands of dollars, maybe millions, to attract a specific audience, that celebrity's fans, to the product to convert to paying customers.
For the company, it's an investment for more revenue. If Substack paid this guy a quarter of a million dollars, they must have thought they could make that money back and ultimately profit within that year.
The fact that they're investing in themselves in order to grow actually makes those who are business- minded feel good about going with Substack simply because the owners are active in the company and its not an afterthought.
I think I'll go with Substack 😊 Thanks for the video ❤
how i change my user id of substack.
That I don't know! I recommend contacting Substack's support email.
Your criticism of Substack really helped me, thank you! Hate speech has to be fought, because it has nothing to do with "free speech".
Who gets to decide what is hate speech vs speech that you hate?
@@WTFCryptoNews These people just aren't thinking of these issues to their logical end. I wonder if it's chemicals in the food supply, SSRIs, or other drugs that are preventing logical/rational thinking.
What is misinformation for you might be the actual truth. You have no way of knowing it, you believe official info: so for you that is truth....
Medium has become less than 'Mediocre' considering the quality of content. Majority content there is pure clickbaity and BS. I therefore stopped writing there.
Even Medium publishing houses are allowing writers to publish articles titled 'How you can make 2M dollars every month'.
Interesting opinion! Thank you for sharing.
What exactly are you considering to be Covid miss information you mean like suggesting that people be healthy and take vitamins which have been repeatedly proven in peer reviewed publications to provide better benefits than the drugs
I don’t agree, hate speech is free speech, hate speech is subjective. I don’t care for anyone that censor any speech.
Cool! Thanks for sharing your opinion :)
I cannot believe you're literally asking for censorship and banning opinions you don't like. Very anti-democratic and bigoted (read: arrogant) to establish an universalist epistemic ontology inside one's head about what is _a priori_ "correct" or "incorrect". And to bear such rabid intolerance over dissenting minority voices is actual true hate speech.
Oh no! Do you want me to take this video down? :(
Look at how quirky she is!
calm down
@@gorofujita5767 - Calling someone "quirky" is paying them a compliment!
Hi Zulie, enjoyed your video. I would be interested and hearing about your thoughts on LinkedIn publishing in contrast :) TYYY!!!
what platform is censorship free? that's the only thing I care about honestly.. so tired of someone saying I can't say something... I obviously am not promoting violence or doing revenge porn or something but basically anything else you should be able to say and in corporate America you cannot, its all gatekeepeed. which is infuriating to me
Write everything on your own website and host it yourself. Distribute on other platforms after that.
I did that and experienced first hand ban from substack. I used it as a newsletter and summarized my content there and pushed it to my own website. That violated their policy ( apparently ) and they locked me from exporting my readers. Dangerous, right? What if I had thousands of readers?
I am not promoting anything problematic. I am writing tech articles.
