It was definitively shown in 1992 that caliber is not important. A properly constructed hollow point generating 400 plus ft lbs AT THE TARGET is the key to good stopping power regardless of caliber. The debate has been over for 32 years.
150 grain 45acp is getting significantly more speed than a 150 grain 9mm. You match bullet weight and you'll see in power 45 is superior but not in mag capacity.
That is false the US armed forces use only FMJ and works well especially when the 1911 was designed around the 45ACP FMJ 230GR also not many rounds have 400 FT-LB 9mm 300-400 past 400 is +P+ which wasn't a thing in the 90's the 45ACP is around 350 FT-LB unless using +P to get around 467 FT-LB also the civil war shows that to be false with old cap and ball rounds was just as effective
I’ve been a 45 ACP man for over 40 years but now with the new model self-defense ammunition in 9mm I’ve changed to 9mm due to a little less recoil and magazine capacity!
@@bruceb9515 Yes it has, and have you not seen .45 +P or 450SMC from Double Tap or 45 Super, or seen any of the offerings from Underwood and Buffalo bore? I carry 45 +P and 45 Super and 450SMC in my 45 Super and XDM and 9 mm doesn't compare even in plus p.
For self defence, 9 mm has more pros as compared to 45. Sure 45 has more energy but 9mm also gets rhe job done. You cant ignore the obvious 9mm benifits over 45 such as light weight, less recoil, more ergonomical which are more important in panic situations. Not to mention modular design and more capacity. 45 is great for nostalgia but 9mm is more time appropriate.
You're correct about everything but energy. 9mm has roughly the same if not slightly more muzzle energy than a .45 when they're both standard pressure cartridges. .45 is on average around 350 ft lbs with a 230 grain bullet and 9mm is averaging around 360 ft lbs with a 115 grain bullet. .45 can transfer more energy than 9mm to a target with properly expanding hollow point ammo tho bc of the larger surface area. Both cartridges are good, especially with some of the loads we have for them in the modern day, but 9mm does have the edge in the majority of areas when it comes to an edc/ccw or a self defense weapon
I carry a .45 caliber 1911. I own double stacked 9mm M&Ps but after taking it to the range with my 1911 I see a huge difference in performance when shooting swinging steel targets. I believe capacity is more beneficial in a rifle than in a handgun due to the fact that in order for you to have higher capacity in a pistol the rounds have to be smaller. I used to be a 9mm fanboy until the ammo shortages of the pandemic when it became impossible to find hollow points. That’s when I learned that the biggest weakness of 9mm is that you must have hollow points for the cartridge to perform at an acceptable level. That’s when I purchased my first .45. Yes, I carry hollow points in my .45 but I know that my 1911 will still get the job done if all I have is full metal jackets.
Im a 9mm team member. I own guns in both calibers but with the newer 9mm loads and the high cap mags im a 9mm guy. Plus i run a 9mm PCC which runs the same mags so for me its a no brainer.
Steel core? Not sure if i misheard or you just have a design of hollow point ive never found. Also im team 10mm and team 9mm, but id take a 45 over nothing for sure
There’s no comparison the 45 has always ruled the 9mm. It hits harder and transfers more energy on target, makes bigger holes no mater what round you use. The 9mm is a little flatter shooting at distance.
I like both rounds but there are some real problems with this video as it touts a comparison. With the 9mm, the container is close to the block and centered so it is knocked backwards but reoriented itself to the upright position. Hitting center of the block gives a great and complete look at the impact area. This is great. The issue is with the .45. By placing the bottle farther away and off to the side - not to mention using a round bottle - it makes it so that bottle falls over instead of staying upright which gives a bit of a false impression as if the bullet alone is accounting for that difference. The same think applies by hitting near the edge of the block and having the corner chip away. That would also happen if hit by the 9mm or any round that was close enough to the edge that its impact diameter exceeds the edge of the corner. So while there is little question that the .45 is a larger round and more likely to create a larger impact area that the 9mm, the video itself is misleading in favor of the .45. Next time I would suggest using the same bottle type for both, placing them both against the block and then firing one shot higher on the first bottle (but not so high as to make it topple over) and then hit the 2nd bottle a couple of inches above the bottom of the platform. Then both are equal and you would get two impacts perpendicular to one another having both gone through the same initial barrier. I don't mean this was deliberate or anything - just pointing out that it gives a misleading visual of what the .45 can do versus the 9mm that has less to do with the bullet and casing and more to do with the target setup and shot placement.

My opinion 357 sig 10mm HOT 45 acp true +p 40 sw and 9mm
I love shooting .45 auto and my firearms in that caliber at the range, but I no longer EDC a .45 and have converted to 9mm. Once upon a time when I first got my CCW I carried .45 religiously; a Para Ordnance Warthog and then a Glock 30, but as I got more training and more overall trigger time I switched to the 9mm in a Glock 19. I just shoot it faster/more accurately, I get more rounds in a magazine, and with modern bullet technology the difference in actual ballistics in real world situations is negligible.
Either/or will get the job done. 20 yrs ago we chose the .45 for a duty weapon, as 9mm ammo became so much better there's many depts in the country that actually switched back.
Wrong. 9mm and 45 have about the same energy with their average pressures. Typical 45 ACP is a low pressure cartridge also. Lighter grain +p 45 is a different story. And 45 obviously makes a bigger hole if the JHP expands properly, which equals more surface area, more energy transferred. But this decades old dumb debate about which one is more powerful just boils down to grain weight and the powder load.. As with most cartridges.. There's some stout rounds out there for both.
Since I'm in a communist state, Washington. The next carry pistol I would buy is a 45 acp since I'm limited to 10 round mags. Saying that, I'm glad I already have 15-17 round mags for my 9mm edc. If you're limited on how many rounds go larger caliber. If not, go for capacity.
Davidriggs9084 myself and my wife live in eastern washington and with the bs the state both myself and my wife carry revolvers . Mine is a Single Action 45 and my wife has a snubnose 357
With modern ammo in +p or +p+ paired with muzzle distance is there really enough difference to make a difference? Smoother recoil for me with a .45, but been shooting 9mm for years.
A lot more than what round hits hardest should go into your decision of what round to carry. Things such as, gun fit to your hands, round capacity, recoil, ability to get back on target quickly. While a .45 acp may hit slightly harder, the fact is all handgun rounds suck when it comes to stopping bad guys so you need to put multiple rounds into them especially if they are on drugs which many of them are. Fact is 7 out of every 8 people shot with a handgun live and there are countless cases of people being shot and it really not fazing them right away. Therefore you want a round that performs decently for a handgun that you can easily put multiple rounds on target as quickly as possible and as accurately as possible. The 9mm best fits that description. The 9mm while giving up a little performance to the .45 acp, it's not that much but you have a much higher round capacity with most 9mm handguns, recoil is much less which allows for quicker follow up shots and recoil is quite a bit less making it easier for most people to shoot more accurately. Yes there are people that can shoot a double stack .45 acp quickly and accurately but they are going to be able to do all that even better with a 9mm while only giving up a slight amount of wounding performance. Yes there was a time when the 9mm sucked but impovements in bullets and powders changed that
9mm is built for speed to defeat armor. 45 is built for mass and release of energy on target. It's apples to oranges. That said my edc is a 1911 in 45acp. If I was facing soldiers with armor that might change
From close distance .45 cal has better performance. More foot pound energy and bigger hole .... it's physics. 10 mm or even full .40 cal have better performance than .45 cal but expect the recoil as trade.
As a big bore handgunner for some 50 years im still trying to figure out what your trying to prove..if your talking human targets then i would suggest a layer of cloth then a half inch pine board then two more water jugs then another half inch pine board.now yOU have cloths, ribs lungs& heart.then bone.YOU ONLY NEED 16" TO 21" FROM FRONT TO BACK.
I might go for a .45 if there were more pistols with a 12 + 1 or greater capacity other than Glock (sorry Glock guys), that being MY minimum capacity requirement for a full size gun. For now, I'll go with 9mm, with 17 or 18 + 1 capacity, or .40 S&W, with 15+ capacity.
The .45 hits harder. I can take you out to my range and prove that statement. But, paper targets, steel plates, concrete blocks, and gelatin are not people. .45 makes a bigger hole. If you have 230 grain bullets in the .45 and 115 grain in the 9mm, the 9mm needs twice the shots to put the same amount of lead downrange. The advantage with modern pistols goes to the 9mm with alot more capacity in the full size guns. With military pistols being restricted to ball ammo, you get a lot more mass and frontal area with the .45. Even with modern defensive ammo, the 9mm depends on velocity for proper expansion and penetration. With the microcompact 9mm pistols that are so popular today for concealed carry, you're giving up a lot of velocity when you give up that 2 inches of barrel. From 200 to 400 fps, depending on the ammo. Everybody trains to fire multiple shots, nowadays. Hollywood showed us for decades that the bad guy always drops with one shot. It doesn't always work that way in the real world. In cold weather, with heavy clothing, hollow points can get plugged up and not expand properly. I favor the .45 in cold weather, especially, 9mm in the summer or when my back is acting up because it's lighter. This debate is going to go on forever. Doesn't matter what you use as much as where you put it. Shot placement is still the most important aspect of defensive shooting. Consider this, what if you've only got time for one shot, what do you want to use? BTW, young man, that's a lead core, not steel.
I think you made a mistake about the ammunition or misspoke, a steel core hollow point will end up doing the opposite of what hollow points are intended to do and overpenetrate soft tissue.
.45 and 9mm when compared on actual lethality targets damn near have identical impacts and damage done in every area of the body. So really they’re the same round 9mm is just cheaper and you can carry more rounds at a time so I’m team 9mm all day
Sorry this is gonna burst your bubbles, but the 9mm is superior in almost every way. The 45 only has an advantage when being used in the super category of power loads, and still has many disadvantages. Ironically the light weight 45 auto is much better than the heavy loads. IE 111 grain grind hard, and 135 grain Underwood. The 9mm 90 grain +p far surpasses 40 and 45 cal when it comes to being barrier blind and windshield proof. Sorry but everyone has been wrong. *The 10mm and 357 sig are "superior", yet stills have obvious disadvantages. 10mm is really the way to go if you want the next level of power, and weight. Tbh Hollow points are for people that are lacking in understanding. I would never use a hollow point. It's not even worth discussing. Sorry the whole world fell for that scam, and yes hollow points cause some of the issues this nice man is talking about I grew up with a Colt 1911 and a 44 magnum M29. I have shot all the way up to the 120mm (M1 Abrams). Bigger isn't always better, and in combat the 9mm+p in the solid copper form is FAR superior to 45 and 40 in capability (countless factors) and even quite often in POWER. Yes even in "automotive" penetration. I still love my Glock 21, but I have to buy exotic Defender/Hunter rounds to even justify it. I might get the new Ruger 45 Carbine because the power levels will get to 850lbs of energy, again only if you're using solid copper +p+/super technology. Lmao you get that from call of duty?
My biggest concern is over penetration so I go with 9mm g9 126 subs. They have the same energy as the +p 86g g9 but lower recoil
45, 9mm is boring
Two world wars 😎🇺🇸🦅
9mm is easy to conceal and more accurate while recoiling less. The obvious choice.
Do you want it to exit? Or do you want it to cavitate?
Can Hellcat use hollow point ammo?
357 magnum
I will get my hands on one! Stay tuned 😎🇺🇸🦅
From close distance .45 cal has better performance. More foot pound energy and bigger hole .... it's physics. 10 mm or even full .40 cal have better performance than .45 cal but expect the recoil as trade.
Depends on which one if my handguns needs a walk. Could be my Glock 26. Could be my Sig P245. Or my Sig P220. Or my Springfield XD. Or........

Team 9. The 45 is subsonic
For those stating recoil as the reason to go to 9mm try the glock 30 gen 5.
If I had to pick one I’d go with the 45, but I find myself choosing the 9mm because of the cost lol.
BTW, young man, that's a lead core, not steel.
.45. its got nothing to prove.
My daily carry is Sig X macro 18 rounds of 9mm civil defense 50g at 2000fps....yeep you read it right the first time
Kind of curious if it even expands right or if it's moving too fast to do so
@@Joe-nr9xf watch the testing videos on UA-cam, civil defense 9mm 50g testing, it's unbelievable on a good way

9mm for pistols, 5.56 for anything else.
I think you made a mistake about the ammunition or misspoke, a steel core hollow point will end up doing the opposite of what hollow points are intended to do and overpenetrate soft tissue.
You are correct. I did misspeak. I corrected this many times before. Good catch!
9mm for ME....I HAVE BOTH.
Having both is a good problem to have! 😎🇺🇸🦅
.45 and 9mm when compared on actual lethality targets damn near have identical impacts and damage done in every area of the body. So really they’re the same round 9mm is just cheaper and you can carry more rounds at a time so I’m team 9mm all day
Why are you using ice? Also, did you say steel core?
Everyone has to choose what they are comfortable with and hope they never have to use it

Got it! Thanks for the tip!
Sorry this is gonna burst your bubbles, but the
9mm is superior in almost every way.
Sorry the whole world fell for that scam, and yes hollow points cause some of the issues this nice man is talking about
I grew up with a Colt 1911 and a 44 magnum M29.
Please save your emotions/energy and read your Bible if you want to get better at what matters. Don't worry about what the Lord can do for you, worry about what you can do for the Lord.
There's levels to everything.

It boils down do you want water canteen or ammo it boils down to weight?
Weight and capacity go hand in hand. Everything is a sacrifice.
Either, but I carry 9mm anyway - need higher capacity and penetration imo
