Um, hello- they already covered that? SHE’S BRITISH. They don’t hug or... give a shit about each other, basically. She told her horse and then hugged it from a safe distance away from her children... and then she was done with it? That’s why she didn’t step in. Because technically the horse or dog thing counts, so she basically already did everything within her power as a deeply repressed and emotionally confused British person (and terrible family member/lover of dogs and horses), probably, long, long ago.

It’s a cute movie nonetheless and I have warm memories of hanging out with my best friend in high school and taking her little babysitting job charges to go see it at the cheap seats to escape the heat during the summertime. Happy times.

There was a lot of movies that had a “I need to find my father because my life is not complete without one” movies when I was a kid and man did it make me feel shitty for just being raised by a single mom. Like, did the writers ever think about how these ideas would affect the kids that watch them? Is it truly common to have a wealthy and loving dad, just a phone call away after years of absence? Mrs Doubtfire was a comedy and family classic that still took into account that kids would absorb the message and brought home the message that not all families are the same and that’s okay, as well as assuring kids of divorce that it’s gonna be okay. That’s how you make a positive impact on children, instead of nonsense like this.

I never said anything about it but At some point my dad had to talk to her because he could see it was getting out of control. Fun fact there’s actually an interesting story to “the stereotype that in the UK back entrances are more open than front entrances.” In 1982 a man named Michael Fagan noticed how lacking security was for the British palace. So to prove a point he broke into the palace twice. The first time during broad daylight where he walked around the palace for awhile, drank half a bottle of open wine he found and then left. The second time he snuck in at night and actually went into the queen’s bedroom. She woke up and he explained to her that she needed to improve the castles security. Then he was taken into custody. Interestingly enough laws at the time meant that he couldn’t be charged with trespassing, and the only thing they could charge him with was “stealing” that open bottle of wine from the first break-in 😂 anyway they ended up dropping the charges and DID improve “back entrance security” after that... I’m sure I got a couple details wrong, but that’s the gist. So I totally understand why that stereotype/idea of poor British security could become a running joke for years to come.

"I'm trying to protect you" is what my mother would say to me to keep me childlike and dependent on her for as long as possible. It's supposedly why she denied me any kind of high school experience. I *_loathe_* Daphne's mother in this movie. Even when I first saw this movie, I knew I hated it but I didn't know why. Now I know one big reason is because I saw my own abusive mother in Daphne's, and Daphne's mother is nowhere near mine was even though my mother also would have loved to work in the same place as me, for extremely selfish reasons.
To be fair, I don't like anything about this movie. A few actors are pulling off respectable performances despite the horrible writing depicting nothing but selfish people in this whole damn movie, and Daphne's mother is a target of pointed vitriol for me. I do know this is personal but I would hope no one confuses her in particular with a good character, since her motivations never make any sense anyway. When Daphne's mother said, "I'm trying to protect you," here in Nick's review, I screamed at Daphne to get away from that woman 😅

Let’s just appreciate that we no longer hold British people to such a high regard. It’s hilarious I’m such a short time we’ve shifted from “wow such class so suave” to “these fuckers talk like cartoons and eat beans and roasted tomato for breakfast” and I love it

you better apologize for calling this the worst amanda bynes just because you're absolutely right doesn't mean you have to say it 😂 (still love this movie for the stereotypical london aesthetic that still speaks to my soul)

My sister LOVED this movie, and I just discovered right now today that I have been quoting "loos free" for YEARS not knowing it was from this movie. Every time something is done my sister and I just announced 'loos free' we rarely use it in the correct context but my god my mind is blown over such a simple thing lol

The whole 'chocolately' thing is the same way for Taco Bell having 'meaty' tacos. Their meat (was? they might have gotten better) has so much soy filler it wasn't legally allowed to be called meat.

What a Girl Wants was going for The Princess Diaries but they missed the mark. Please do She’s The Man, which is flawed sure, but I love that damn movie. Amanda is a great actress but I’d rather watch a feature length movie of Moody’s Point.

I think her being 16 turning 17 and having graduated high school was the hint to her being smart. Most graduates are 18 or turning 18 in the summer.
But also, yes, this movie did make me love Colin Firth
