6 Daily Hip Mobility Exercises to Strengthen Your Hips & Keep Them Healthy | Reclaim Movement

  • If you asked me what the one natural movement is that I recommend people do daily…it’s the Side Bent Sit Reverse. My body loved it immediately and I did not struggle to remember to do it - it was like my hips were calling to me…again, please!
    Why is it so beneficial?
    We live in a world that means we can often avoid hip rotation movements for days on end…if ever, for some people. Hips are ball and socket joints. To stay healthy they need to be used in their full range of movement. This movement is a great way of gently starting to gain that, at low impact as it’s not particularly weight-bearing at the same time (as with similar standing movements). The only weight is that of the legs themselves.
    When hips regularly feel tight from too much sitting on a chair, or you’re noticing it becoming harder to achieve wide hip movements (e.g when crossing a stile out on a walk, or trying to pass under an obstacle), then try the different levels of this wonderful movement.

    Use the whole thing as a mobility flow, starting from the reaching movements right through to final lifts to Tall Split Kneeling, or choose which one you enjoy the most and work it into a daily routine. Don’t push yourself up the progressions until your body tells you it’s ready.

    Notice how your hips & lower back feel afterwards and throughout the day and whether you feel more range through them in general - consistency with this movement most definitely pays off (as so many of my clients tell me!).
    Always bolster your body to help get your body into the correct position - add padding or a cushion & use hands when needed with the aim of using them less over time.
