Hello Fabi--This was a great first reaction video! Subscribed! I'm a 61 y.o. gay man, and one of the great things about this show is that it shows younger viewers such as yourself how things were in the past in most countries for LGBTQ people. I find that a lot of younger people, though for sure not all, tend to take for granted the freedoms and legal protections we now have in many countries. (Unfortunately, in many places in the world, things are still just as bad today, as I'm sure you know.) It is also important to remember that things can go backwards if we are not vigilant--it is happening in many places in the U.S. right now.
As you watch this series, keep in mind that it jumps around a lot from decade to decade, so you kind of have to be aware when the scene is taking place by way of the fashion, hairstyles, cars, etc. This is also a series that deals a lot with American history, but don't worry about getting too bogged down in that if it gets confusing. Just know that certain figures in the first couple of episodes are indeed historical figures (McCarthy, Cohn, etc.) but others are fictional. Also, the Red Scare and Lavender Scare eras in the 1950's were indeed real, a lot of people's lives were ruined by them.
I'm looking forward to your reactions to the rest of this series, and also looking forward to seeing what else you decide to react to on your channel. Best of luck!

Have you seen a movie called "Philadelphia"? It was the first mainstream Hollywood movie about AIDS. I just watched it. It is extremely heart-breaking. Tom Hanks' performance is absolutely brilliant. He won an Oscar for the performance. Denzel Washington plays his lawyer...another stellar performance. I think the screen writer for the movie is the same one who wrote the screenplay for this series.

in the 50's there was very much widespread very serious homophobia (most gays a significant amount of homophobia as well) on every level. From family, friends, jobs, government, ect. There was almost no where (and no one) you could go where you wouldn't be considered sick and the one of the worst possible deviants. Many, many gays wished they were straight, almost no one had long term committed relationships, a relationship of a year was very much a long term relationship, and it wasn't common. Monogamy, was almost unheard of. Many lived full double lives (though not all). having a wife and kids as cover, while being gay in secret on the side.
Note I will be using the term gay here, as it applies to the two main characters, but these issues apply to anyone who doesn't fit the heterosexual gender concepts of the US at the time, just for short hand. So gay, bi, queer, trans, non binary, cross dresser, fetishes, ect. You were all kind of lumped together.
In almost every place in the US being discovered would risk losing friends, family, jobs, housing, not to mention very real chances of having the living shit beat out of you, being forcibly run out of your town. To real chance of very series injury and death. And once its know it would spread like wild fire in your community. And of course, incarceration. and being institutionalized against your will.
Now this is Washington DC, so it's even worse. Especially if you work in the government and have any, any access to people in power or access to any important information. Episode ends with the start of the witch-hunt of deviants adding to the already witch-hunt of communist and sympathizers. If your discovered, your done. Job gone, Not eligible for Federal Employment (for another 50 or so years, and the Government is the biggest employer in the US). If you're connected, it goes public. It ruins you, your family and the news would follow you almost anywhere in the US. Suicide was exceptionally common.
When they give out Eddie s name, it's a massive massive betrayal. But one of the two reasons (outside of protecting his own ass) Hawk throws out Eddie's name is Eddie is one of the lowest levels of government employees. While he would lose his job, and his immediate friends and family would find out and disown him. It wouldn't enter public information for the rest of the US. He has the chance to move across country and start over, where no one would know (unless he appleid for a government job and then that would absolutely come out). it's why Hawk is sending him money. Money to start over somewhere else in the US. Someone higher up, thats not a real possibility, unless you go live in a. cabin in the woods completely isolated from the rest of the public (or move out of the US which the wealthy did have the option to).
Now there were always people of power and influence that people in the know usually looked the other way, or could bribe to keep quiet. Hawk benefits from this, to a degree. Comes from money, family of influence, and a war hero. But the witch-hunts removes quite a bit of the shield the privileged in society had access to that the common man didn't.
One of the biggest fears (besides hatred and ignorance of course) for this hunt is that fact that is viewed as a security risk. And while it is true that the Soviets would actually seek the weaknesses of US citizens (including gays). The fact that it was a weakness to exploit is of course not that gay people are just naturally more corruptible, but that due to societies intolerance, it gave the soviets very real pressure to manipulate. If society was fine and dandy with it, there wouldn't be anything for the soviets to exploit.

Thanks for taking the time to explain all of this to me. I honestly wasn’t expecting it to be as bad as it was!

Thank you for this great explanation. It was thoughtful, thorough and informative. I wish this could be provided to some of the other young reviewers. They have absolutely no idea how bad it was then. I had a similar discussion with some of my younger family members. They found most of the information about how restrictive things were then unfathomable.

So glad I discovered your channel, just subscribed! Great series to start out with. Matt Bomer and Jonathan Baily were perfectly cast. I was at the charity event in 2012 when Bomer came out publicly. Many of us there knew he was gay, just not publicly. We were so proud of him when he surprised us by thanking and proclaiming his love for his husband to the audience, finally opening up the closet door.

I would like to recommend a very good film for you to watch, the name is "The Normal Heart". I don't know if you've seen it but this film is exciting and very interesting. It talks about the lives of queer people in the 80s in NY at the beginning of the AIDS crisis and talks a little more about this discovery and the struggle of these people to be seen by the government that at the time ignored the emergency situation

For those unaware of the history, "The Normal Heart" is a film adaptation of the successful play by writer/activist Larry Kramer, based on his experiences in the early years of the AIDS epidemic in New York City. The play, first produced in NYC in April, 1985 was one of the earliest full-length dramas about the health crisis to be performed in the U.S.; the first had actually been "Night Sweat" by San Francisco playwright Robert Chesley, first seen in NYC in 1984, then in Los Angeles and San Francisco. "The Normal Heart" is slightly self-serving in its (self-)portrait of its central character, and many people who were also active with GMHC (Gay Men's Health Crisis, the major AIDS service organization in NYC) certainly disputed Kramer's version of events and people in his fictionalized account.

Hi Fabi! Subscribed immediately, love your reaction and the choice of the show too.
I would very much recommend another mini-series with Jonathan Bailey, Crashing (2016) U.K. It's a sitcom from Phoebe Waller-Bridge and a truly underestimated gem from Jonny's performances :D (I take it you've already seen Bridgerton, judging by the gif choice in the beginning haha)

It's funny you say that the character looks like Clark Kent because in reality this actor (Matt Bomer) was going to be Superman but because the actor is gay they gave the role to another actor. The actor is openly gay and has suffered and still suffers from
