      Those who haven't read the story of flatland probably know that anyway if they have read Plato and the allegory of the cave. The man who managed to break his chains, went out and saw the real world, later returned, told the tale but got beaten to death by the others. And in my opinion they did damn well. I have thought about the possible direction of the 4th dimension (in relation to our 3D space) for a very long time and this is what I think:
    In the same way as a funnel hole in the 2D plane of the flatlanders would lead down the 3rd direction (downward) and pull them closer and cause them to fall down into it if they got too close, our world works in the same way with gravity and the curvature of space-time. high gravity areas, such as black holes and large bodies of mass such as planets and stars are bottoms of pits that curves into the 4th dimension. The stronger gravitational pull, the steeper the hole/funnel/pit. So we can visualise the 4th dimension as inward and outward, where we are on a flat plane with occassional pits where there are strong gravitational pull. English is not my first language, so I'm sorry for any misspellings and wrong sentencing.

      Still though your inward and outward does make sense. It's like imagining a 2d being going WATCH OUT THIS FLAT WORLD IS CURVING INTO THE 3RD DIMENSION but if we are in 3d intense gravity like black holes actually are like Watch out our 3d world is curving inward. Your description of 4d makes decent sense because not only is the example clear to understand, but that black holes are ACTUALLY 3d holes just like a 2d hole is well a hole in 2d.

      As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
      Romans:3:10,23 King James Version
      Everyone is a sinner, one sin is enough to send you to hell, however God loves us and provides a way to Heaven, through Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ paid the full price for your sin past, present and future. He offers the free gift of eternal life to anyone who puts their trust in him to save them, not in their own good deeds which can NEVER save them.
      I have a clear gospel presentation on my channel by a trustworthy pastor. Watch it, understand the gospel and believe it. Get saved today, it lasts for eternity.
      These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

  • @PuffyNutty
    @PuffyNutty 17 днів тому +2

    I have been invested in this topic for several years, and to me, it’s somewhat simple to comprehend how our world would appear like if we were to look into it from the fourth dimension.
    We see life in 2d. And that will stay true no matter what, even if (as was mentioned by the video) a 4d hypercube were to take us into 4d space. This means we can still imagine ourselves looking into our 3d world from 4d space.We would basically be seeing a fragment of our 3d world.
    Imagine a whole, uncut pie. In your 3d world, you cannot see inside the pie. But if you were moved to the fourth dimension, you would be able to see a fragment of the space inside the pie as a 2d image.
    This 2d image would look like you took a very thin slice out of the pie. By very thin, I mean INFINITELY thin. And then, you would directly look at the slice from the side. This is what the uncut pie would look like if you were to gaze at it from 4d space; a fragment of the space occupied by the pie.
    I would like to say that this is NOT how a 4d being would see our world, but how we 3d beings would see our world looking at it from 4d space. We only see fragments of it. 4d beings see everything.

    The 3D sphere can go wherever/however he wants in the 2D world (violating the physics in the 2D world's perception) 4D beings can do the same in our 3D world e.g going through walls, teleporting objects, and so on, which we perceive as non-sense or foolish (denying the existence of such beings or scenarios) that has to be the closest we can get to explain spirits, ghosts, etc. Not believing or being offended on the existence of higher dimension beings compares an individual to a 2D square.

    In the beginning of the video, it states that the Flatlander can only see 1 dimensional. So if the Sphere lift the square to the 3rd dimension, it will still only see 1 dimentional. It won't be able to even recognize its own 2 dimensional world and friends from this angle. To it, the whole world has gone wacky!

    • @CaleOglesby

      We view the world one dimension lower than you currently exist in.
      We are three dimensional being but only see in 2d. We do not see true 3d. Our brains fake it by interpreting what our stereoscopic eyes see.
      When the square gets pulled to the 3rd dimension, he then can see things in flatland as 2d as he is temporarily promoted to 3d, just like us.

      The whole logic of comprehensing dimensions above three, used in the book, is in my opinion brilliant.
      What i find as a contradiction, though, is A-square's complete inability to observe the shape of a sphere from the plane of Flatland and yet just a few moments later, when lifted above it (to the 3rd dimension) can see everything. It should be either one or another...
      i don't think he is promoted to 3rd dimension. he is still flat (two dimensional), but just lifted there (or, transferred, if you will...)
      Nevertheless, for the sake of getting the picture, i can live with this.

    • @cocharles563
      @cocharles563 3 роки тому +6

      Yes he would see the world like a scanner sees A piece of paper pass through it. But he would see things in a perspective he has never seen. He would be able to see the shapes of his fellow friends from A different angle. He would have new understanding on what hidden laws conform shapes into a square rather than a triangle or circle. But once he returned to flat land he could not reproduce what he saw. he couldn't construct A model. This is where we are making the mistake. Shapes don't grow in his reality; so saying he could just explain growth to help understand the third dimension is not accurate. Same for us if a higher dimension exist saying we can just imagine what it would look like is a mistake.

    If you imagine the hypercube as a bunch of progressing cubes connected by parallel lines it makes more sense. Just as a cube is a continuation of infinite cross sections of squares, so too is a hyppercube infinite cross sections of a 3d object in space and time. So that undulating snake shape is actually a square being represented in each planck moment in our universe. The 4d observer should, theoretically, be able to interact with any "time" or "space" within the range of that object. That is to say, If i stick a 4d finger i a 3d object or timeline, i would, to the 3d observer, appear as if i'm appearing out of no"where", possibly for indeterminate durations, and then disappearing. It might not know that I appeared in its "future", but it might know i appeared in its "past". In 3d, we percieve 4d as a 2d flatlander percieves the "glow". We know there is something that moves along an unkown axis that we can't contol, we call it time. We can't move "in and out" through time, though. A being trying to show us how to step into 4d would probably be showing us the entire timeline of our universe, from beginning to end, as one long, undulating snake in its dimension.

    • @Dexuz
      @Dexuz Рік тому

      Yes, describing time as a physical dimension produces the exact same practical effect than a physical dimension would.
      An easy way of seeing this is having a 3D being that, for them, moving to the past and to the future is like walking down the street; for such a being, popping in and out of existence like the 4D sphere does in this video would be just as easy, simply walking to the past/future and then back again.

  • @patrickogier7419
    @patrickogier7419 5 років тому +6

    Okay, simply put: The hypercube is grossly under-explained or even mis-explained. Just as in Flatland, a two dimensional being can move freely within his/her plane, also points on the line can move up and down the line, although per the book, the line is full of points that live, too. Hypothetically, we can moved freely in space as well without leaving the third dimension. HOWEVER (and a big however), we do exist and can minutely manipulate the fourth dimension, which is time. In fact, we are barreling through time as I write this. I use the word "minutely" because time is affected by movement and gravity. That's kind of saying the same thing because movement changes your mass anyway and you approach infinite mass as you increase speed to the speed of light per Einstein's TOR (E=mc^2). Even going Mach 4 dilates your timeline a minute fraction of a second. The fourth dimension is difficult for us to imagine because just like there are an infinite amount of squares that make up a cube, infinite line segments that make a square, and infinite points that make up a line, there are infinite moments of space that makeup a timeline. Expanding on that concept, there are infinite timelines and infinite time travel loops in between moments of time. THAT is what is mind blowing.

      Bill Cipher first appears in the Gravity Falls episode "Dreamscaperers", which aired on Disney Channel on Jul 12, 2013 in "Dreamscaperers". This was animated and complete a few weeks before he debuted. TED-Ed original posting is Jul 17, 2013 and it had to be designed, animated, rendered, sound mastered, and posted 2 weeks before UA-cam Premiere.
      And I assure you, I worked on this much longer than 2 weeks :) so that guy was yellow waaaay before that. Look at the old concept art tests for PrOof: www.caleoglesby.com/TED-Ed-Exploring-Other-Dimensions

    So, in the movie about flatland, (I don't know how source accurate it is) the square is almost killed by gravity, a fundamental principle of science. This means that the difference between dimensions in geometry is direction, while scientifically, it is physics since there is no gravity in flatland. We have 4 fundamental principles: gravity, electromagnetism, strong nuclear force, and the weak nuclear force.(I think) If flatlanders lack gravity, then they are kept to their dimension by another, let's pick electromagnetism. The 0'th dimension, of pointland is only held back from lineland by say the weak nuclear force. The planets can't be secured with electromagnetism in most cases, so there needs to be gravity, as without is, we would float to hyperland. In hyperland, gravity alone cannot keep the beings from wandering to the 5'th dimension. The dimensional wandering would be problematic because, as we saw, beings of lower dimensions can be killed with the higher physics. In conclusion, I'm overthinking things.
