    Short Video on a quick bench test of the MDC 1600
    #1 Cause for failure: water intrusion through speedometer inputs typically caused by freeze damage.
    #2 Cause for failure is high/low voltage and reversed polarity from an incorrectly connected battery.

    Hello Ron. JUST finding your videos. I have a 2001 Mastercraft X Star. Voltmeter doesn’t work at all, Water temp starts at 90-100 then slowly goes down to nothing as the boat runs. Other gauges work ok. Ideas?

    Hey Ron great videos. I have a 2002 Malibu sunscape 23 eLSV. interesting thing happened this year. The gauges began to flutter and not have stopped working. For a bit they would work for 5 or 10 seconds then go crazy again. the perfect pass has power to it. other electrical items work too. i thought it might be a bad ground or relay but have not been able to find anything. it seems like it could be this.

    Hi Ron, I have this Medallion MDC-1600 in my boat and my gauges don’t work until I push on the oval output connector then the gauges work as expected. Any ideas of how I can fix this?

      The stepper motors in your gauges have a life expectancy of 20 years +/- 5 years, you are at the end of this rope, I would not spend any $$ on this system, do whatever you can to make the connections at the plug knowing it will be temporary and a conversion kit is in your future.

      @@rontanis1024 Thank you for the reply. When I take the boat out, I've been putting tape on the oval connection and wrapping it around the larger connection to pull it to the position where it works. This temporary fix will work for about a day or two.

    Hello. My oil pressure gauge bounces around a lot at idle. at higher RPMs it pegs at max. Could this be a wiring issue or an internal issue with the MDC? The oil pressure sending unit is new and so is the gauge.

    Hi Ron,
    I have a 2006 496HO and have had an intermittent tachometer for the past year or so which, in the past, would be fixed (temporarily) by pulling & re-plugging the large Mercruiser connector on the back of the motor. Also doing the same with the 4 pin plug on either the MDC 1600 or the back of the gauge would temporarily fix the problem. A few months ago it quit all together and pulling & re-pluging those connectors would not fix the issue but I found that by pulling & re-plugging the 18 pin connector that it began working again but now it seems to have quit all together although if I unplug and re-plug any of those previously mentioned connectors, including the 18 pin, I do get (sometimes) movement of the needle when the ignition switch is turned on and I get 300-500 RPM with the engine running but that is all.
    Note that all other gauges work and all connectors and components have NO exposure to moisture and that my MDC does not have the speedo pressure sensor on it. I have checked and applied dielectric compound to all connectors.
    I have also read that there have been issues (at least on the 4 pin connector of the MDC) where there have been inferior solder connections of the 4 pin to the circuit board which when re-soldered have solved intermittent gauge issues.
    Do you know what color wire on the 18 pin connector is the tach input?
    MDC-1600 / 6603-20002-01 G / 9-19-2005...any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Paul

      Pin D-2 on the 18 pin connector is the tach sender, should be gray wire & is next to the center bolt

      @@rontanis1024 Thanks...any thoughts on those that have opened up the MCD (with a heat gun) and found a bad solder connection (link below) and also, does it sound like a bad connection since it only involves the tach or could it more likely be the stepper motor in the tach?

    I have a 98 Malibu echelon with the medallion system, my gauges work intermittently, and sometimes oil pressure and water temperature are pegged as far over as they can go, so 80psi oil pressure and 240 degree water temp. When they go out I can get them to come back by wiggling the small oval connector. Any suggestions?

    • @shumanchu1

      @@kadencleaves6554 Faulty stepper motors will "freeze" the needle in random locations. Generally, wiggling connectors does not relieve this issue, but gently tapping on the gauge pod itself will "loosen" up the frozen stepper. If your gauges are pegging max intermittently, and you can wiggle a connector to relieve the issue, then almost certainly there is corrosion on the connector contacts causing the MDC to think that the inputs are maxed out. Get some deoxit cleaner and clean up both sides of the connector.

    Great video. I have a 2002 MasterCraft with the Medallion gauges and MDC. My volt gauge and Perfect Pass is reading 10.3V. My batteries are brand new and read 13.1V when the boat is off and 14.4V at 1,500 rpm. I have 12.98V to the + and - terminal blocks under the dash. The low voltage alarm keeps going off. I've replaced the MDC and volt gauge and neither solved the problem. Where should I look next?

    • @rontanis1024
      @rontanis1024  3 роки тому

      You have a 1+ volt loss between the engine & dash, the dash power typically comes from the engine not the battery, check the main engine connector at the engine

    Hi Ron, very informative video. I do have a question about my boat, when I turn the ignition on the Speedometer does not find zero and every time I turn the ignition on and off it chatters but it always ends up in a different place. Additionally I have a multi gauge fuel, oil, voltage and temp. I hear the chatter, the oil needle vibrates but never sets to zero. Is it reasonable to assume the gauges are faulty. Thank you.

    I own a 2000 MasterCraft Prostar 205. The tempurature gauge will jump around (only while I am skiing). I have replaced everything that is heat related such as the raw water pump, thermo, and put in a new sending unit. We are now going to consider replacement of the MDC. The boat will run totally at normal tempurature (which has been verified by computer checks) then the gauge will jump around from normal to 240 when it actually is not heating. No codes have ever been thrown, and the engine alarm does not go off. HELP?

    • @shumanchu1
      @shumanchu1 2 місяці тому

      The stepper motor inside the gauge pod is bad, not the MDC. In general, when the MDC fails, you get total failure of all gauges. If you have one or more gauges working, and others that are not working, then you need to open up the gauge pods and replace the stepper motors inside.

    • @rontanis1024

      Without the proper tools you cannot verify the input signals, minimal would be a 12v test light to see if power is getting to the MDC, otherwise if there are signs of water intrusion into the box then you can safely consider it bad.
