It was originally MGM, then Warner Brothers bought out MGM and they own the rights to the movie. However, Disney licensed the rights for this ride along withs several other historic movies that aren't Disney, so that the ride could pay homage to classic films that weren't all from inside the company.
many MGM musics in the streets of that park, same in disneyland paris a lot of john williams (superman , ET ( . , close encounters,...) around the lagoon, in front of gertie the dinosaur, the park is a tribute to cinema in general, not just disney (E.T. is from universal!)
