Covid happened to everybody. In California they closed the forests, beaches and parks…all open land. I still managed to camp at least, probably illegally. Strange hard time that for those who survived have something to tel their grandkids. Home ownership is fine, but don’t let it own you and keep you in one place. Consider it a permanent home base. I appreciate your channel and advise.
As a new follower to the channel, I appreciate you showing and talking about the hard times , not just the highlights. I think I'm going to learn alot from you. thanks for posting.
This video in particular is super valuable. I'm no thru-hiker, heck I'm not even a proper hiker. I just like long walks and find the idea of a multi-hike very appealing, so will try it this summer. Most UA-camrs don't actually go into much depth on the "not so sexy" reality of it all, so appreciate this very much.
hey chase, the casual honesty of this video is great. having filled our coffers with great hiking information and luscious vistas i felt this one told us the most about you.
Don't lose your way of living because of the need to get a house or a materialistic way of living. Do the things that make you feel happy. The pressure of getting a house is taking so much energie from me, so I decided to move to the mountains instead. I hope I can try to live with less stuff so I don't have to give all my life to some boss or something 😅
so many memories watching your video today. I walked my GR11 last year and police officers wouldn't allow me to finish in Cap de Creus(unifinished business as they say) due to fire hazard so I had to swith to the french side, really beautiful there.
I slept in Tommy's cabine the last day of my Hrp. Such a cool and unique place. And also a beautiful view on the finish line. Some French guy's told me about it. I went straight form Las Ullas to this place, so I could finish my HRP early in the morning. I was lucky I was the first one to arrive.
It’s just a 100m or so off the trail so I think I lot of people miss it. I probably would have if it wasn’t so talked about! Really unique part of the trail.
Memories can be strange. I have very good memories of meeting you during your first HRP, meeting you on trail. Anyway, happy that you have closed the final section in a more satisfactory way, and yes very nice cave-glass hut. ❤
Hi Chase! What a great video. I´m sure you have many memories of this hike. The stone hut with windows was awesome. There was also excitement along along the way, France. I am happy, you`re back safe. Thank you for sharing your hike journey.
Plantéate recorrer algún GR más pequeño, en España tienes muchísimo por descubrir. La belleza no necesita de 800 km, y la búsqueda de la belleza merecerá siempre la pena. Un abrazo.
Inspired by your GR11 video, I set out to spain in 2021 but got turned away at the Hendaye/Irun boarder due to not having the vaccine docs/QR code too. Ended up doing the GR10 instead. An equally wonderful adventure, but only made it to Merens Les Vals (44/55 stages). Had the opposite problem on the GR11 last year - finished in Albanya due to fire hazards and only did (42/47 stages). Unfinished business sucks... However, you've just inspired me again, will head back to do the last 11 stages of the GR10 at the end of June for closure and as training for doing the Swiss Alpine Pass Route in August. Keep up the great work mate! As a note there were no (covid) restrictions on the Spain/France boarders in 2022 and are assumed to have ceased now.
The door must be only 80cm high! Getting in was a challenge, getting out nearly ended my GR10 at the last hurdle! 🤣 The water source just down the hill was bone dry (4 June 23). Make sure you tanker from Tangarade/Banyuls. The views down to France and the coast on one side and the Spanish plateau on the other on the ridge, after the Auberg, make this a notable stage! Awesome.
Hey Chase, would you consider doing a Backcountry skills camp in the US? We need to build shelters along the trails and make them safer for the seasons and conditions. We would so benefit from your experience and teaching. We need Exercise Physiology!
Agreed! The ignorance is mind blowing! Hopefully there will be change soon. A major catastrophe is inevitable with those kinds of numbers on the mountain. Climbing Everest today has nothing to do with mountaineering. What can we do to help change?
Be interested to see how you like the alcohol stove. I tried and in the end I just don't see the point due to needing so much more fuel to even come close to just half the boils you get out of a 110g canister. More logistics too on refuelling since there aren't off the shelf options that conveniently fill those fuel bottles. Isobutane stoves have just gotten too light, efficient, and convenient.
I went on an overnight with a friend and because of a miscommunication neither of us brought the fuel for the alcohol stove - turns out it works with hand sanitizer as well! Probably not as efficient, but yeah my point is a definite advantage of alcohol stoves is they'll burn anything
hey man! thanks for sharing and being honest about what happened. I bet that must have felt so good to properly finish it. I have no thruhike planned for this summer due to work and the itch for a long hike is big! Thruhiking is the best
I feel you! To end my 2022 PCT (due to COVID closure) meant walking to the 🇨🇦border, turning around, walking back 2 days & hitching all day to get out to the Seattle border just to get back into Canada. 🙄 Annoying finished to a 4 month hike... Anyway, great content as always😊 P.s. interesting Merrell shoes, would be keen to hear about those if you wanted to do a quick review!
Come to USA and thru hike one of the long trails. Well welcome you bro. Ps I still do your core work out five days a week Planning on Appalachian trail in 2024.
2:23 I left some nuts and Oreos on that shelf last summer, seem to be gone :D I love Refuge Tomy, walked 40 km on that day, just to stay there for my last night of the HRP, had tea and good conversations with a guy who camped next to the hut. So cosy and the sundown and rise where awesome!
Thanks for telling your story and sorry to hear the border patrols overshadowed your experience. I had to quit my HRP when I was over halfway last summer because of the heatwaves and it's itching to continue where I left the trail
Thanks old mate! Yeah feels good knowing that I’ve ticked that last stage properly. Just the first stage from Hendaye to go. I might squeeze it in this summer we’ll see!
Hey mate, as a 53 year old I only really delved in depth into the world of youtube during the lockdowns (I'm in Melbourne) and you quickly became a favourite talking head for me. I still enjoy your content but do miss your hiking vids. Your decision to not do annual thru-hikes is totally understandable, though I wonder if you might document the odd little weekender every now and then? Cheers
Honestly thought about giving it a miss but I needed to get out and make sure all my gear is in order for their Dolomites next week! Videos to come on that as well!
I’m trying. Every time I sit there editing it I just get disenchanted with the whole thing. The versalite is sweeet! Just wish it was a nicer colour, I’m not really into red 🤣
I found out that i can earn money whenever, all it needs, just sit in front of my pc and keep my skills uptodate. while at alpine i have time to max 45 or so. then it all downward slope with incremental increase of excersize to be able to do. im not really infatuated by everest, but i still do reall stuff that kills if underprepared.
Every time I think about buying property, I get a very ugly feeling inside. Every time I think about downsizing my possessions, I feel a certain calmness and sense of control. So... no house, but a lease on a small apartment. In some places, you can actually live in a monastery without taking religious orders.
Im actually doing a master thesis on borders, and I definitely agree with your perspective. Especially in Europe, we should be able to guarantee rights and take care of health crises without these limiting border practices. With regards to natural parks, it is even more absurd to divide it, many people living on borders dont experience one area being one national culture and the other an entirely different one, it is often a mixture of many culturee/languages
Borders create a legal framework to protect rights. Without borders, you don't have an enforcement mechanism to protect of rights since otherwise someone can simply appropriate someone else's property and legal rights.
Love your more recent philosphising and truth talking, adds depth and makes your content well rounded and even more appealing to me.

Great story. Fantastic video. That was the coolest shelter (rock cave) I’ve ever seen.
Happy Trails

Bureaucracy in Spain is a nightmare. Lived in Spain twice in my life and each time it was a reason to become a serial killer.
Fantastic video! It's so cool!!

Please, please, please upload your HRP footage. We’d all love to see it ! How’s the Montbell Versalite ?

I second that.
Also, good to hear about the Versalite.
I fucking loved the refuge the Tomy I spent a great night there last year

Are you an Aussie?
I sure am
take me with 😭🥺
It’s a bit of a downer on the HRP dude, positive vibrations please. ✌🏻
Wait, you’re 38?!
Doesn’t look it, does he!?
I’ve had a good life.
I was going to say mid-30s: the trace of gray in the beard gives it away. I got my first "skunk spot" at 36.

100% with you on that one. It’s bureaucracy that Chase had a bad experience with, as so many of us have, not borders.
