So are we all just gonna ignore that Joustus is really similar to that one board game from Skylanders? Also would like to mention that this update is my favorite. Showdown is one of my favorite multiplayer games ever, and King of Cards is, by far, my favorite campaign I’ve been playing through.
I bought it as a christmas gift and thought it was going to be boring and let's just say i can't stop playing Shovel knight is by FAR one of THE best games ever made
i always questioned why this gane was taking so much longer then all the rest to develop seeing the share assets and character i though the third should come out in to time but seeing the finnished product it make so much sence develop a card game with new rules & designs and making a character purposely clunchy to show his naivety while making making have proper game flow it sound near impossible to do in the time of the previous development
Not only that, they made what are essentially dlc games and because they love the fans so much, if you already owned the game, all these dlc’s came out for free. That is true love for your audience.
I'm still more then confused why the fuck the huge indie boom happened. Don't get me wrong, I love indies and enjoy them usually quite a bit more. I mean a shitton of gamers go NUTS over graphics, can't look fancy enough. And get along with all that "nice" lootbox gambling and all of that nonsense. Yet Minecraft is still hugely popular, tough it could never shine in graphics. And here is shovel knight. 8 fucking Bits (sorta). People love it. Altough most of the recent players propably never even touched a NES game besides SMB. Anyway, glad Yacht Club had such a success with Shovel Knight. It really is damn fantastic, just the little details alone make it worth. Don't know how and why they made it, but glad they did.
@@sagichdirdochnicht4653 what happens is that AAA game companies started to just loon at ways to monetize "content" see how much were they able to get away with while offering the minimun possible without even trying to strike a balance between making money and actually caring about the playerbase then suddenly some small teams started putting actual effort into their games and well this kind of stuff happens shovel knight reminded people of what a good ol game felt like, you paid for the game and not only get a good experience but you also get a FULL game something that is a finished product something with love put into it and that took the approach of "HOW MUCH CAN WE DO while being limited in what we have" and success was guaranted for them :D and AAA have tried to mimick it but besides nintendo welp... yeah nothing has reached there yet
I don't think its over for Yacht Club because they are developing Shovel Knight DIG! I know its a seperate game but hey, at least we will get more of Shovel Knight. Also there is the community! I've heard that someone from Reddit said that he is developing a fan game of Shovel Knight, where the main character is Phantom Striker.
What I really appreciate about Shovel Knight, is that it doesn't misuse blindly the nostalgia for "old-school design". A lot of people misremember old-school design anyway. For example, people tend to think of the first Legend of Zelda as this obtuse game that doesn't tell you anything ("and that's why it's good dammit!"), totally forgetting the fact that each copy came with a MANUAL that would explain the backstory and all enemies and even have hints for finding all dungeons (and also a straight out walkthrough for the first two!), and that was the primary source of knowledge that would spread around between players. The important point is that the game didn't try to be obtuse, it's just not everything could be put within the game. And many retro games misremember this kind of stuff, so for example they design something that deliberately hides information and makes discovery frustrating and it's like... why? And what I really appreciate about Shovel Knight is that it is inspired by old-school design, but doesn't follow many misconceptions about old-school design, you know, and is actually really modern in terms of... well, pretty much everything, which is what makes it such a well-received retro-styled game. It takes all the good old-school philosophies but implements them with the modern-style finesse.
Exactly. They recognise what worked and what didn't, as well as the limitations of the time. The palette is made to resemble styles brought about by early hardware restrictions, but isn't actually restricted. The soundtrack is similar in this way as well, using retro instruments but without the need to limit the actual content of the music. The gameplay feels much smoother than older games, but seems like what they were aiming to achieve. It's everything that retro games *could've* been, not everything that retro games *were*.
Honestly, not including second quest, the only part of Zelda 1 I would call that obtuse is the entry to dungeon 7, and even then the game does leave you some hints and I've seen one person work out how to get in on their own.
I really wished I helped kickstart this game when this was announced. This game is by far, the best indie game I've ever played, and I wished I could've helped it along the way. Only way I could is buying ALL the ports I can play them on. I look forward to what the future for Yacht Club Games entails. And that new ninja game looks awesome!
I really wish Nintnedo would pull a Cadence of Hyrule with Yachy Club games and Team cherry and let them make make either a Kid Icarus or Metroid game. It'd be amazing
Spectre Knight for gameplay. Plague Knight for story. King Knight for content. Shovel Knight for balance. Such a robust game. Can't wait to see what Yacht Club does next.
I absolutely love the Shovel Knight saga, and that's why I'm happy they will be moving on on the future. Too much would make the series stale and I'd rather see them return only when they have something big.
Fun fact: They actually implemented the grind rails in the game but only for a single level where instead of doing a grind King Kight just rollerblades through.
My first mindblow was when I entered the Specter Knight domain and saw the ectoplasmed floor. I'm just astonished by the creativity of puzzles in the level design.
Wow, the fact that they develop the game from end to start is really interesting. Would’ve never guessed. Maybe that’s how they’ve become so good at teaching without teaching.
It's really pretty genius. You finalize how all the mechanics are incorporated before you even begin considering how to teach it. Really gives you a full lesson plan, so to speak.
Just imagine what kids *30 Years ago* would say if you traveled through time and gave them the Shovelknight Series in 1989. Every other game after that would look bland in comparison for a while, even though it looks like a game from the late 80s. You can clearly see that the developers understood games way better, thanks to all the time they had to experience them. Makes you think how good games might become in the future! -I am so excited for Fifa 79!-
That's because Shovel Knight would be impossible to make 30 years ago. The game seems to look like it was made 30 years ago, but the NES could simply not handle this game. Shovel Knight can display way more colors than the limited color palette that the NES had, a more advanced parallax effect, and, among other things, it has enough storage space so that the games is longer than 30 minutes without making the game extremely difficult like NES games were. It feels like a better game than one from the 80s because IT IS a game that it was impossible to make and run in the 80s.

@@eduardorpg64 It is not only the aesthetics but the mechanics as well. Going for a higher framerate than NES and having a lot more pixels to work with spase-wise really opens a lot of possibility for the level designers. That being said this does not take from Shovel Knight's success at all. It is crazy good even for our standards 30 years after the heyday of platformers.
What's interesting to note is that the arrows on the joustus cards mirror the enemy's movement. For instance, the divedrake (the small green dragon enemy) primarily moves up and down, and it's card only had arrows pointing up and down
I made my own Joustus cards and table and have been playing it with my friends at school. Jesus christ is Joustus good, they REALLY need to make a physical card hame!
Damm that sounds fun. Do you have like 3 or so tables? Dig ones, Cementery ones and Standar ones? Also how do you put the gems? Some sheetd where they should be or you just «throw them» into the table and leave them wherever they land?
I love Joustus, it's like a card game... chess... box pushing puzzle... something. It's really unique, and so different from most card games you typically see in videogames. Also I'm really glad that you interviewed the actual developers, that's a huge step for this channel!
Even though I know they try to teach without tutorials I really wish they taught you that in Showdown attacking during your invulnerability makes your attack slower and cancels your invulnerability. In all the campaigns you were free to abuse invulnerability, so changing that without teaching or saying anything led a buncha annoying stun locks. I get that you can learn it from general combat but when I kept stun locking myself it was hard to think “well, _why_ am I suffering?”, I was only thinking “you know, I _love_ this part of the game where anything I am trying is screwing me more”. You eventually learn to back off when you’re hit by just playing enough but I wish they made a level/game mode/some scenario to learn it. In the other campaigns they do an amazing job of teaching you without a tutorial, but for this mechanic they make it an unknown change with no such teaching. I still love Showdown a lot, it’s just that this soured my experience more than it should have.
Hey dude, speaking of indie games I'd like you to cover Hyper Light Drifter one day. You DID mention it in your 2016 Game Awards but I feel like it deserves more respect.
Now, joustus was fun, but I found that the joustus house bosses often hurt themselves with their attacks. Destroying gems that they had claimed, destroying rows that only had their own cards, etc. I seriously want joustus online multiplayer though. The game is awesome and would be great with friends.
I appreciate Yacht Club so much for giving us this incredible game, the king knight DLC is debatably the best of the 4 stories. I can’t wait to see what they do next.
I really wanna see a Shovel Knight 2, if only to see more boss stories. King of Cards was so good that now I'm yearning even more for my original dream of a Propeller or Treaure Knight campaign. It'll probably be a long while before we see something else Shovel Knight again though, honestly.
They said on an interview they want to keep making shovel knight games forever (podcast is called nintedo power house I think if you want to fact check Anyway just search shovel knight games forever and you will find it)I don't know what they are gonna do but maybe more shovel knight Idk
I literally thought to myself yesterday " I wonder if king of cards is out yet" to find out it just released this week - I've been playing non stop since. Yacht Club has really made it worth the wait, and I can't wait to see what they do next.
The best part of King of Cards in my opinion is the fact that since there are hidden exits to some stages (and the fact that where you go if you find the secret exit for a level is already marked on the map before you find it) that means that if you really wanted to you can skip the later Joustus Houses if you want to. You can even take alternate paths and make each repeated playthrough of King of Cards unique and interesting which I love 😍! Yacht Club definitely inspires me to make my own levels and I'm not surprised that it basically started an Indie game Renaissance.
I like Propeller Knight and I wished he had his own campaign. He has the most charming personality of all the knights IMO and I imagined his core mechanic is built around flying or gliding. But after I played King of Cards, I really appreciate their effort of making a fun game. Thank you, Yacht Club Games!
what about black knight, he seam to linked with many characters in previous games. I wish to know more about his story as well as his story with shovel knight, sheild knight and polar knight. Well black knight gamplay and moveset woudl be similar to shovel knight except he jumps higher and when he digs it hurts enemeis just like his boss fight
@@boserboser6870if they were going with black knight we couldve explored the lore before the events with the enchantress and tower of fate kinda like shovel knight dig we could have even faced bosses from dig like drill knight scrap knight hive knight and spore knight as black knight
Man, I finished Shovel Knight back in early 2015 I guess. Never realized the game expanded that much! I will re-download it, but I also hope that Yacht Club explore new niches/concepts
Ay great video, but I think you undersold King Knight and how he controls and his abilities compared to the other characters. His shoulder barge and spin are simultaneously very simple and very complex; the lack of high mobility like spectre means you have to think a little more about platforming, making it more overall like a puzzle platformer like Wario Land. But the cool thing is that you still have a whole heap of mobility options from the various upgrades, so if you want you can traverse the levels in a whole bunch of different ways instead as most of the upgrades are mobility based. It gives you a huge amount of player choice in that regard, and encourages you to experiment. The Armors, especially the Silver and Green armors, let you experiment *even more* with mobility options as well. It’s like a sandbox type thing where you can create all sorts of different wacky ways to traverse levels and make your own routes. I haven’t seen anyone else talking about this and I think it’s one of the things that make this DLC absolutely fucking incredible
I got all of the Showdown feats I main Treasure Knight in showdown... he’s a powerful Zoner “Be prepared to lose some of your favourites as you proceed”... you can’t lose them if you don’t use them... I literally just use the basic 4 cards
Eventually I would like a campaign for more of the various knights, even if it's several years away, but honestly I'm really excited for anything else they might do
I’m really sad to see it all end, especially with my remaining questions. What was the past shared between Dark, Snow, Shovel, and Shield Knight? What the hell are Goldarmors? Are they knights of Pridemore? If so, then are the knights within the villages freelancers? What was Phantom Striker’s mistake? Why are you using a female Shovel Knight?
personally, i find King of Cards the weakest of the campains, for 2 factors -King Knight is a jerk (sure it fits with him, but it is just unlikable) -some levels are downright unfair
@@lukes.854 The levels are NEVER "unfair" but I would say they are harder. Their shortness is made up for by the fact that KoC can really unforgiving when it comes to mistakes. The distance between checkpoints is longer than any of the other campaigns, you have half the health of the other characters, and the platforming gets really precise later on. But it's never unfair, it's just difficult.
HELP I'm from Puerto Rico and I keep getting error trying to get to the Eshop... I got the 3DS Physical Shovel Knight and updated for the previous ones.... haven't finished Specter yet WHAT DO???
@DeathJerrie had a comment below that sparked this one, but I didn't want to post it as a reply. I'm always struck by the strange dichotomy that old games seem to have: many games today are, by pretty much every standard, considered "better" than original Atari or SNES games, and yet retro games have this charm about them that most new games can't replicate, even when they try. The original Mario is kinda clunky and graphically... meh. I don't know that many people would disagree that the later Mario games are better. Triple jumps are great, ground-pounds are nice, and walljumping is basically a platforming staple now. But there's something about Super Mario Bros. that has a spark that most modern games fail to capture. I think that's why Shovel Knight is so great. It's a modern game, so it _is_ "better" than those old games, with years of iteration and experience by Yacht Club and others behind it, but crucially, unlike most modern games, it has that _spark_ that old games have and new games seem to lack so often. Hats off, Yacht Club Games. Hats off to you.
My only nitpick with King of cards was that they added an achievement for cheating in joustus instead of making one for clearing everything joustus related WITHOUT cheating, y'know like i did in my first playthrough. I do not want an achievement telling me/showing everyone, that i cheated, i want one that says "Hey, joustus is hard as balls to master, but i did it suckas, all on my own"
King of the Cards might be' a great campaign per se... but it turned King Knight into my third most hated fictional character ever, and frankly I have an hard time in playing it by controlling a character I despise so much...
Man, I used to hate shovel knight (except specter of torment), but now that I've experienced king of cards and showdown, I've heaps more love towards these games.
This was a great video! And I absolutely love joustus it is so good! It's sad that the shovel knight saga came to end, but I'll gladly wait to see what yachtclubgames is going to do next

Heck yeah! I’d make an entire deck themed around swapping the pieces from red to blue!
I really want a physical card version of Joustus as well to be honest
I need more Shovel Knight campaigns! I would even play as King Knight’s mom.
I love Joustus. I hope to build my own set out of wood at some point, unless Yacht Club plans to release the real deal.
Can you make extra?
@@williamhuynh869 I wished lol. Hopefully Yacht Club releases their own in the near future.
I appreciate Yacht Club so much for giving us this incredible game, the king knight DLC is debatably the best of the 4 stories. I can’t wait to see what they do next.
TINKER KNIGHT
@@Fizz-Q literally every knight is charming enough to want a campaing for them. I would specially like a Tinker, Propeller and Treasure Knight one.
@@morganjary but HE IS TINKER KNIGHT HE SITS ON A MOBILE CHAIR A MOBILE CHAIR AND HAS A MEGAZORD
I never understood the love of treasure knight but I love my flying french man
King of Cards: 0/10. We never got to go to the moon
Shovel Knight Dig is in the works. A SNES art style rogue-like game. New knights too (Drill Knight, Spore Knight, Hive Knight). Looking forward to it
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Yacht Club has NO BUSINESS making games that are consistently this spectacular
Imagine if Yacht Club Games and Team Cheery teamed up to make an Hollow Knight x Shovel Knight Crossovergame.
Memelord Teseo OMG a shovel knight metroidvania-style game would be amazing
Thank you, Yacht Club Games!
propeller knight is cool but his playstyle would probably just be king Knight with the agility of Specter
what about black knight, he seam to linked with many characters in previous games. I wish to know more about his story as well as his story with shovel knight, sheild knight and polar knight. Well black knight gamplay and moveset woudl be similar to shovel knight except he jumps higher and when he digs it hurts enemeis just like his boss fight
@@sodaguy3651 black knights campaign was described as an extra hard mode. So he'd have had really testing stages
@@boserboser6870if they were going with black knight we couldve explored the lore before the events with the enchantress and tower of fate kinda like shovel knight dig we could have even faced bosses from dig like drill knight scrap knight hive knight and spore knight as black knight
to the moon hahaha, that's some stuff I would start to image after finish this masterpiece!
Hearing Dev insight is so satisfying when they know how to make top tier games
I have never been so happy yet so sad about a game coming out. ive been waiting since 2014 for this and bow its over
Man, I finished Shovel Knight back in early 2015 I guess. Never realized the game expanded that much! I will re-download it, but I also hope that Yacht Club explore new niches/concepts
I want to hear the Shovel Knight Moon level music inspired by the DuckTales Moon level music.
Add Moon knight
If they were to for some reason kickstart the game AGAIN I would pay for DLCs for all the rest of the knights.
6:24
I freaking KNEW the moon was suspiciously close to the final level on the map screen.
I mean Kardia is kinda of a doorway to it if you think about it.
Ooh the moon thing makes sense with one of the secret bosses in the game.
I'm actually working on a card game version of Joustus. Because I loved it that much and always wanted to play it with my friends.
I forgot this was coming out honestly, can't wait to try it
What does he mean "better than the prequels"?
This is outrageous, its unfair!
Snoman gaming: it's better than the prequels
Revenge of the sith: you underestimate my power
Please release a paid DLC with King Knight on the moon! I want to ear what would be the OST
Maybe one day it’ll have a crazy modding community.
I want to play as treasure knight
I got all of the Showdown feats
I main Treasure Knight in showdown... he’s a powerful Zoner
“Be prepared to lose some of your favourites as you proceed”... you can’t lose them if you don’t use them... I literally just use the basic 4 cards
Let My BOY Go To The MOON! !!!
Oh man, it's out??
Time to buy it on PS4 and start over :D
I just did this earlier this week! 😆
the only thing that disappoints me in king of cards is that you can't play joustous online with other people
I really really want to see King Knight on the moon.
If Yacht Club and Team cherry worked together on a platformer, it would been legendary.
I KNEW THAT SHOVEL KNIGHT MODEL WAS SMALLER THAN NORMAL!
personally, i find King of Cards the weakest of the campains, for 2 factors
-King Knight is a jerk (sure it fits with him, but it is just unlikable)
-some levels are downright unfair
Really? I actually thought the levels were the easiest (or atleast equal to difficulty to Shovel of Hope)
Anyone else too stupid for Joustus?
The card game strangely reminds me on Tetra Master in Final Fantasy IX back then.
They did mention that it looks like Triple Triad from FF8 but plays nothing like it haha
HELP
I'm from Puerto Rico and I keep getting error trying to get to the Eshop...
I got the 3DS Physical Shovel Knight and updated for the previous ones.... haven't finished Specter yet
WHAT DO???
Reminds me of Wario GB and GBC games. Love it!
Yes! They were a big inspiration
I do not want an achievement telling me/showing everyone, that i cheated, i want one that says "Hey, joustus is hard as balls to master, but i did it suckas, all on my own"
"I think were done with shovel knight for now" proceeds to make shovel knight pocket dungeon and shovel knight dig
I wish the game explained what the different card types do better
I finally 100% this game.
Edit: The birder level was the best
GREAT GAME... terrible protagonistic focus who made me sad throughout...
King Knight goes to the fucking moon Deluxe (Featuring Goldarmor from Shovel Knight Showdown)
It will be exciting to see if King of Cards can top Plague of Shadows, which was the best campaign for me.
This and specter knight was my favorite games, but the finale was very depressing lol
God, now I’m excited to get Treasure Trove for the Switch! So glad I preordered it!
king of cards > spectre of torment in term of gameplay in my opinion
This was a great video! And I absolutely love joustus it is so good! It's sad that the shovel knight saga came to end, but I'll gladly wait to see what yachtclubgames is going to do next
Liked the video, don't bash the prequals 3/5
