Fender Twin - One of the Best Amps in the Helix

  • For my Presets visit: johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ A big clean machine...About 1963 was when this version of the Fender Twin that most of us associate with that "Twin" sound arrived on the scene. The Twin Reverb is an 85w clean amp, and has been used by almost everyone at one point or another. The perfect pedal platform, but also a good place to look if you're going for some of those Two Rock type tones as well...

    That amp was one of the factory presets on my floor and it's the only one I use of them in fact with just a little tweaking it became my go to clean tone. It's the only preset that I've found so far where I can change from my PRS to my Strat and not have to worry about changing the patch because of different pickups. I have yet to put a tube screamer in place of the stock overdrive but after listening to this....I think I will. Thanks John!

    I've used your template/approach to make an AC15 version as well.
    Of course, all this is underpinned and validated by your impeccable musicianship.

    Best Twin I’ve ever heard. The damn things are so heavy and so loud, it’s rare that you get a chance to see what they can really do. I sold mine years and years ago and haven’t regretted it. Having the HX Stomp lets you experience all these great pieces of gear without breaking the bank. Great video as always. Nobody showcases the Helix technology better than you, in my opinion. 🤘🏻

    • @electricj5
      @electricj5 2 роки тому +2

      I got to say you aren’t “experiencing” the gear that is in the Helix - just a cheap copy of of it. Massive difference in tone and feel when I play my vintage Twin compared to a Helix. Still a cool tool but not the same and I imagine most of the patches are similar in conduct.

    • @BrandonScottSellner
      @BrandonScottSellner 2 роки тому +6

      @@electricj5 to each their own. I know a lot of people with great gear but they don’t have the ears to dial in great tone. Most of these classic amps require deafening volumes in order to really hear what they have to offer. I also know people that can’t figure out how to dial in great sounds with modeling technology.

    • @ksharpe10
      @ksharpe10 Рік тому

      @@electricj5 You can feed a modeller thru the front of the older Amps. And they do at a respectable volume sound just like those Large Wattage amps. I still have and use a Vox Tonelab se, it will push a tube amp into doing what it did back in the OLD Days. The settings on the real amp, just need to be set Neutral real clean setting, Set volume level of Amp. to comfort. ADD the modeller and set the modeller amp to all the tonal ranges like i make a Clean setting and then alter the Clean setting to the Pushed amp sound, usually MORE GAIN control. IT really works for gigging situations. I was astonished that it worked but GETS that FEEL that everyone seems to talk about.

    Great video man - I really enjoy your tone and the way you dial stuff in. I think you constantly search for the same type of tones that I do - so it's cool to see what you come up with. You were right on the money with the Normal US Double drive at 7 - it really hits the sweet spot when you hit that point - strange why they made it that way - you'd think that would come in at like 3.
    I noticed you usually use the default cabs and specifically the dual cab block - doesn't that force the panning left/right at 100%? Any particular reason you don't use IR's or if you do - which ones you'd recommend?
    I look forward to looking up other videos like this one and following along with my Helix. You should make a playlist of these type of videos for each device so they are easy to find.

    Great video, and beautiful intro/outro jams! I've certainly played through my share of Twins over the years. Back in the 70s, the keyboard player in my high school band played an Arp string synthesizer through a Twin at gigs, and completely fried the speakers! Lately, I've been playing through a Twin Tonemaster (digital recreation of a Twin) at a rehearsal studio; it sounds nice, but lacks the punchy-ness of a real tube Twin (at least to my ears). I think you got a better sound here.

    Awesome video and playing as usual! Love these videos where you choose an amp or pedal in the Helix and do these deep dives.
    When you drop the reverb on path b, do you normally stick with the y split or change to a/b split and why? Just curious since the y split and a/b split seem to be very similar

    • @johnnathancordy
      @johnnathancordy  2 роки тому +4

      Hey Sean. That's an interesting question. I *think* a Y split will send equal signal to both sides of the split, whereas the AB has a relationship where as you increase signal down A, signal down B decreases? Need to look into that a bit more to be honest!

  • @mattgilbert7347

    Hi Johnathan. Firstly, love your content. It's opened me up to a world of music (Jazz) and tech that I had previously found too intimidating.
    Secondly, I'm considering going HX Stomp. I still love and use my valve amps, and will always own some - but the days of having 7 amps and 3 cabs are over for me. It's just not practical, they aren't all getting played. A Vox, a Fender, and something Marshall/Laney/Other (you get the idea) is all I need. The HX will be my main tool.
    Is it difficult for a newbie to learn this stuff? I don't really get into DAWs or much programming stuff, I work full-time and only have weekends for music. My current ampless solutions are a Humboldt Simplifier (good, very good in fact - but it still requires a large pedalboard) and my various single preamp pedals or my Hotone AMP (don't laugh! It's really quite good!) and either a NUX Solid Studio or GFI Cabzeus Stereo for the cabs/IRs.
    That's a lot of individual outboard tech units for what I want. The GFI and Humboldt can stay. They are probably the best at what they do (for now). But a few amps and a bunch of effects and the amp sim units can go - IF I can get my head around the Helix "thing".
    Kemper and AxeFX is like a foreign language to me, I just don't understand it. So I figured HX Stomp, based on fellow newbie's recommendations.
    Any tips or links to tutorials or anything at all that could help me would be wonderful. Thanks mate.
    Just because a Twin is a big girl doesn't mean she can't be sexy.

      Hey Matt!
      So there's quite a lot of stuff on my channel where I'm building presets (like this one I suppose) which is different to some other folks who tend to use HX edit. Of all the modellers I've tried, the Helix stuff to me has the most straight forward user interface, though there's still a bit of a learning xurve. But it's a fun one

    Maybe a random question and sorry if covered in a separate video - just discovered your channel and loving it! - why have the reverb on a parallel path? Isn’t that the same as setting it’s mix at a low %? Just trying to understand the thought process; I’ve struggled a bit with reverbs in HX in trying to get the balance right with how ‘real’ amp spring Reverbs are…

    • @johnnathancordy
      @johnnathancordy  2 роки тому +3

      I think in theory it actually makes the dry tone louder, as if your reverb on the parallel path mix is set at anything other than 100%, the dry will be coming through from there too. It may be worth exploring the actual impact but that is the most obvious thing I can think of for why people might prefer it?

    JOHN specializes at turning any Amp into a DUMBLE, not a knock on that. But I found myself doing this with some of the vintage amps. And had to stop myself. If I want the Dumble just do a set of presets using the Boutique amp. for that it takes alot less TIME. If I wanted the PLEXI sound that was used by the MAYALL boys back in the 60's, Eric Clap, P. Green, Mick taylor, i set the Plexi for that, try for 2 presets a Clean, and then use the Clean as a Base and raise the Gains and controls for that maybe add Treble boosters or vintage style fuzz's, and make those turnoffable. OF course if you want to spend alot of TIME you could dial it in to become a DUMBLE, but that would not be very Historical. I would definitly like to know how HENDRIX got that SINGING LEAD sound that he used on the Solos of All along the watch tower, alot of the stuff is added studio effects/by Eddie Kramer, echos/reverbs. BUT JIMI got that SWEET CLEAN singing tone, I assume he had an AMP. Cranked in the ROOM, but it might have been an old TWEED lower watt one, that might be the SECRET he took to his GRAVE. Just left us with that Gorgeous sound on Record. NEVER KNOW maybe JIMI used or STACKED FUZZ FACES, STACKED 2 smaller AMPS. together and turned the volume switch down on his STRAT. I never tried that, MIGHT be a new video for JOHN to EXPLORE the SECRET HENDRIX sound REplicated??

    I have Helix (Flagship) and Fractal AX8, AXE FXIII, and a FM9 on the way, but I keep forgetting about my Helix, until I come across YOUR videos, as they’re some of the best content on The Helix family of products.
    I still have 16 tube amps from 1965 to the present and currently having a blast with my new Wangs #2204 (Marshall clone) that just simply sounds glorious, but I just plugged into my Helix, after watching your video, and once again I’m HOOKED! Helix and the Fractals are like a drugs to me and once I get it all setup my wife complains that I lock myself in the studio for HOURS AND HOURS!!! lol. It’s true though!
    The modelers are simply fantastic and I only use them for recording, instead of my tube amps, as it’s easier all the way around to record the modelers and get a perfect signal every time… 🔥
    Although I play them all, I still luv my tube amps to death and I was selling a lot of gear off, used pedals and recording gear that I grew out of, but now I’m keeping the rest f the stuff that I’ve been acquiring for over 45ytrs, and there is a LOT of gear! So much, that we are looking at a new home, as there is no more room here. The wife is gonna go through the roof though when she see’s the 2 new Ceriatone amplifiers I purchased, that will arrive at any time. Pray for me! lol 🙏
    Thanks Johnathon, for all your help and hard work in bring these videos to us all!
