The vinyl comes with a separate insert with the lyrics, and the vinyl itself was released in four different colors. The focus is definitely more on vinyl when it comes to physical media now, because less people are using it at all unless they're into vinyl.

What I really appreciate about Pete is that he doesn't use the crutch "I've heard this sound before and if I wanted to hear a song like this I would listen to an album from the 70s." Pete always gives albums a fair shake whether it's a legacy band putting out a new release or a band like GVF trying to play 70s rock. I enjoy GVF and when I saw them live last year the crowd was filled with teenagers who had little idea who Robert Plant is. They are hard-working guys who put on a good show. Thank you Pete for reviewing it without saying if I wanted to listen to music I would listen to a album from 50 years ago.

Spot on. LZ literaly stole songs before developing their sound, so that GVF are influenced by the great LZ, I don't care. If the songs are good, they're good, and GVF writes very good songs.

@@stephanea5364 And, likewise, if I'd rather listen to Led Zeppelin instead of what, to me, sounds like a "tribute band", then you don't need to care either.
If this band becomes the Led Zeppelin of the current younger generation then more power to them and they can enjoy success without my needing to get involved in that.
I grew up through the 1970's and always considered that the best decade for music and that is where I focus most of my attention, even though my tastes have expanded over many years now away from just rock to blues, soul, jazz and electronica also. But there's more than enough music in and around that decade for me to spend the rest of my life exploring and enjoying without needing to look elsewhere.
This idea that so many people have that just because it's new, you have to support it is silly - people are allowed to like what they like in terms of music and if there are bands out there that I don't want to listen to then I can still wish them every success because, if nothing else, they are making live music, which is very important.
And, yes, they are allowed to "plagiarise" and reuse, exactly in the same way Led Zeppelin did with a lot of black blues songs that they themselves did the same thing to.
      Why would anyone suggest otherwise?
The vast majority of the new bands that I hear (and, yes, I do watch reviews of their albums, as I have done here) are plagiarising the stuff from the 1970's anyway - and, again, that's fine and it demonstrates the "permanence" of the classic rock sound, but for an old guy like me, the originals are what I stick with.

I got the album a few weeks ago, but have only listened to it once. I like it though. It's like a combination of the first and second albums. From The Fires is considered a double e.p, as the first half was the Black Smoke Rising e.p. i don't know if you noticed, but there is a website listed in the booklet to view the credits. I tried the link, but it didn't work. I do think that the album is a little short. For clarification, Josh and Jake are twins, and Sam is the younger brother. I believe that the twins were born in 1996, and Danny and Sam were born in 1999. Another Zep comparison is that Sam plays both bass and keys, just like JPJ. From what I remember, Danny was a class mate of Sam's in school, but he was friends with Jake.

While I already really enjoyed this album upon first listen as well, it’s one that - even moreso than Greta’s other albums - I think you really have to sit with for a bit and soak in to fully appreciate. There are some amazing moments of growth here, like on “Indigo Streak,” "Frozen Light" (my favorite), “The Archer,” and “Meeting the Master.” I honestly think it’s a bit unfair to try and rank it next to Battle at Garden’s Gate (though I do still think that’s their best album so far) since the approach and sound is kind of apples and oranges. The more you take it on its own merits and for the raw, live vibe they were going for here, the more you can enjoy it, IMO.

After they get off the Zeppelin train for the most part, you really hear some great songs with interesting arrangements. They use the soft/loud dynamics very well to build some emotion and drama and the production is excellent. Just really good hard rock, a bit of a spacey vibe to it as well. @@Blueswan84 Sorry but I have to disagree. The GVF singer overdoes the Plant nasal whine far too much, and the GVF guitarist's Page-isms are far too obvious. Rival Sons though influenced by Zeppelin, don't mimic Zeppelin the say GVF does; and they draw from a far wider range of influences. RS' singer Buchannan is one of the best singers in rock today, and doesn't sound anything like Plant. But the rock music press are enamoured of GVF for some odd reason, and the hype about them is way over the top.

Listened to this a little bit during the past week, Pete, when you mentioned this was in the review stack possible for this week. In my late 60s, there are several instances where some music or songs may sound similar to what has been heard before, but that does not preclude me from enjoying the newer music. Great Van Fleet fell into that category when you and SoT first brought them to the viewer's attention and bought the last album after listening. This album is likely to fall into that camp as well. But agree, sad packaging of the product. Always appreciate the positive way you approach reviews. So again, thanks for the new product show and including this album and band in the episodes this week.

Battle at Gardens Gate was a solid album for me, a step up from their full length debut, Anthem for a Peaceful Army which i was lukewarm on. Loved the first two EPs. Such a shame we can't get proper physical releases anymore, i don't hate digipaks if the bottom, where you lay the cd, is plastic as it makes it feel a little more substantial if we can't get jewel cases but the completely cardboard type is crap. I will give this one a multiple listen on my favourite streaming platform to see if i wanna pick it up physically. I wouldn't equate the same zeppelinesque sound of GFV to Rival Sons as Rival Sons are an amalgamation of many older groups but Jay Buchanan is a great vocalist, more bluesy, something more akin to Paul Rodgers. Thanks for your honest thoughts Pete & not glossing over the obvious fact that GVF sound like one of the best bands of all time but with their own sense of identity. I will check it out & imagine based on my love of their previous record that i will have a lot to relish here.

@ladyiam7084 Rival Sons in their early days, maybe so, but with each album, they incorporated many different sounds into each release. The vocals & guitar work from Rival sons doesn't mimic that of Zeppelin to the same magnitude that GVF does. The guys may be doing so unintentionally, or they are unable to escape the influence, perhaps they are leaning into it to become bigger, who knows. Zeppelin has been my favourite band since i was 12. Almost 30 years later, it has not changed. I like both Rival Sons & GVF, many bands incorporate sounds from bands that inspired them as it's music they love. GVF is a little more on the nose with it, i loved Battle at Gardens Gate & I am currently enjoying the new one, will take a few more listens to determine which i like more from GVF. I never understood some of the criticism of GVF...the reminder of Led Zeppelin is there, clearly, but I thought music is based largely on prior influences anyway.
Something, oftentimes, is derived from something else and the time has more than arrived for people to compartmentalize the greats such as Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Van Halen....whomever....
Those guys and others had the privilege of being a part of the birthing process of the Rock genre....all of them arrived within the first 14 years roughly.
That allowed tons of room for originality and a legendary British Invasion to take the world over.
Another 52-53 years has passed since then and the genre is old enough to collect Social Security checks, and qualify for a senior discount at Denny's, but i digress.
Along with that stark reality should be the realization that there is only so much originality, uniqueness or whatever one can reasonably expect from a genre that's roughly 67 years old.
The last point is something Pete pointed out and he's right. It's a very fair and realistic observation.
Or as I often say, the reason why we had Mozart in the first place, is because there could only be one.
Holding bands accountable to the past on an impossible grading curve (or expectation) is not going to do the genre or it's musicians any constructive good.
I think one needs to consider that what Rock bands do produce today, has to be judged on the merits of what that band CAN reasonably do. If it's good or great then it's good or great for what it's meant to be.
If it's awful then it's awful, but if it is awful, try not to use the past to place said band into the awful. That means we are being challenged to govern our subjectivity with a little critical thinking.
I know...I know, much easier to say and for many, including yours truly, a much harder enterprise to take on.
It is very hard not to entrench as one ages...the older stuff that's time-tested is emotional comfort food, you get entrenched because they were great, original, fresh, new, and innovative. They also shaped one's formative years in many cases. Bias is an almost impossible drug habit to kick when it comes to music listening.
There's no rehab for that addiction.
How many times do we all here or see the comment regarding how the old stuff is better then the today stuff?
It's THE cliché of all clichés...
    But is it true?
    Probably.
But I think that inhibits growth to those who embrace this genre and all other forms of recorded music (audiophiles included) from discovery. I suspect there's a lot of un-discovery going on out there, but that's just me.

If that sums up how you approach music then that's fine - but to me it looks very "mechanical" with too much over-thinking and complexity in there. For me, music is just down to emotions, I like what I like and don't like what I don't.
I would never categorise any musicians making live music today to be "awful" and fully respect their capabilities to get up in front of a live audience and play. If bands like Greta Van Fleet become the younger generation's version of Led Zeppelin then more power to them, I wish them every success - but, to me, they just sound like a tribute band and I can just let them get on with what they are doing. They probably don't want a "grumpy old man" like me in their audience anyway.
The fact that many young bands are plagiarising the rock music of the 1970's just demonstrates the permanence of the classic rock sound - and, yes, the bands from the 1970's, in turn, plagiarised rock 'n' roll and black blues too.
But ultimately music, to me, comes down to how it goes into the ear - and if when it goes into the ear it makes me think "Hmmm, sounds like Zep, I feel like sticking on "Houses Of The Holy" now" then so be it and it's not really for someone like you to try to educate me otherwise.
You might as well tell someone who spends months renovating and customising a classic car from the 1950's to stop what they are doing and just go buy a modern saloon car! That's how ridiculous you sound above.

If only they would get rid of that screaming banshee wail of a vocalist. The music gets no chance to shine with his constant noises which seems to be getting more pronounced with every release. If they would enlist a more soulful richer toned vocalist this band would improve immeasurably. As for the insert pics...maybe not a good idea guys. Also the music, as per the last album, is overwrought and maybe a little more light and shade wouldn't go amiss. I still think their 1st official album is their best and i was hoping for some development but the last 2 ,for me, have seen stagnation. Sorry Pete but this vocalist does not sound like Plant to my ears. His tone is entirely different but his delivery is maybe a little similar. He sounds more like Geddy Lee on helium. They're not some "new" band either and was formed back in 2012. It only took them over 5 years to put out their first EP which got marginal reviews. As opposed to Zeppelin who released no less than SIX albums in 6 years from 1969-75. What I heard from GVF was decent but was less than mind-blowing. Good luck to them but it just ain't my thing. I'll stick with Zeppelin, Stones, Sabbath, Purple, Rush, etc. That's plenty for me..

@@Tityretupatulae At least Rival Sons use their influences wisely and inject far more originality and muscianship into their compositions. GVF are simply knock off Zep clones who somehow benefit from massive overkill media & industry hype. That's what makes them a "safe" choice....
Mystifyingly, they are already accepted, lavishly praised and promoted by the music industry / media establishment, and for that reason, will never truly be taken seriously in the long run. Just like American Idol contestants, no matter how talented.
GVF is simply a symptom of the commercial bloat and direction which the music industry has morphed into in the past 3 decades. We were told in the 90s that Grunge was going to reset the rock landscape....well that lasted about what?.... 3 years, maybe 4 until it collapsed under the weight of over-expectation. Then Nu Metal was the next new thing, but that never gained any real traction. Now in the age of streaming, autotune, AI, etc; true musical originality and performance are becoming a dying art. So now to assuage the doubters, the industry has created this little niche thing called GVF which it wants us to believe, will lead us to the promised land of real musical authenticity. Nothing could be further from the truth.
That saviours of rock and roll schtick might work if they really did something novel instead of purloining riffs, chord progressions, etc etc already realized by multiple other bands in decades past. Now If you want to hear real originality and rawness, try Clutch. Genius comes from unlikely sources.

I mentioned in chat, GVF was the first big outdoor show I saw in late summer '21, mainly by default. I was starved for rock! They were entertaining but still lacked a lot of elements for greatness. Even the guitar solos were a bit s**t. I really wished I could have seen Vintage Caravan instead. Back in April 21, 2021, they released The Battle at Garden's Gate on the same day Vintage Caravan released Monuments, as well as a Motorpsycho album. I subtitled the Kings of Rock battle review: "Gnomes and Scandinavians from the land of ice and fire do battle at the Garden Monument of Oblivion. Who will reign as kings of monumental rock mountain, who will tend the garden, and will both be obliterated by their elders?"
Motorpsycho crushed them all, but as far as the GVF sound, Iceland's The Vintage Caravan is superior in every way. I think the new one is a dip in quality after the patchy previous album. Yet it all sounds like music I would/should like. It's annoying.

He has collaborated with people like Post Malone and the guy that produced Miley Cyrus. I have talked to many people that haven't liked what Ozzy has done in thirty years. Also, GVF is far from "fake Zep". On their previous album, The Battle At Garden's Gate, they went for a very progressive and cinematic sound. I like Zep as the much as the next guy, but they stole from plenty of people. Plus, I lost respect for Robert for being catty to Jimmy. In 2012, Jimmy asked Robert if he would be interested in playing more Zep shows next year. Robert said that he was busy in 2013, but would be free in 2014. So, Jimmy asked him in 2014. Robert responded by telling Jimmy to take a nap. Also, Robert has been very complimentary to this band in the press. So, blame him.
