I commented on one of the youtube shorts which compared k-beauty &styles from different countries in which I stated that I never saw any k-drma or idols without pale/fair skin which definitely restricts diversity and pure talents too which don't come in limelight due to such toxicity.Lots of support gained from different PPL and response but in end my comment is reported and removed 😂.Social media is helping to spread these toxic topics so we have to use social media as a defensive tool too. These kinds of topics needs to be addressed .

Does anyone know why it's SO superficial?
Like in my country it's against the law to put photos to job applications and efforts in legislation, although imperfect, for diversity and avoiding discrimination is a consideration. In Korea it seems the total opposite and then ofc plastic surgery.... I've always wondered if they can tell how plastic they look to each other and expectations on their children and so on. Even in entertainment it's like to nth level and then this falseness about how beautiful a celebrity is as if it's a skill honed through hard work.
I know it's on a spectrum but feels like a Black Mirror world: keep social power where it is and no social upward mobility.

As a girl who is 5'8 (172-173cm) If I was 40kg I would literally die.
EDIT: This comment has gotten a lot of attention over the past few weeks so I want to point out some things. Some people got upset with me, thinking that I am skinnyshaming Korean people for having generally lower BMI than other countries average. I never said anything that would imply that.
I also want to clarify that even though 40kg is classified as underweight for the vast majority of taller people, in some instances it can be perfectly healthy. It all depends on your height, body structure, and genetics.
Many of you are using idols as an example of "normal" weight for females in Korea. I would like to remind you that many idols are forced to diet and starve themselves in order to meet unrealistic weight goals.
And one final thing. I don't know where some of you got the idea that I am glorifying the "fat acceptance" movement, but I am absolutely not. Unhealthy weight goes both ways. There is such a thing as weighing too much, as opposed to too little! (Again, it varies based on height, genetics, etc) Having too high BMI is just as bad as having too low BMI. Both can and do cause health issues!!

For a country that’s concerned with its low fertility rates it’s seem bizarre that they would have a beauty standard that would more than likely stop periods in a significant number of women and potentially make their chances pregnant in the future harder. What’s crazier is that so many women and young girls are trying to conform to this standard and inadvertently pressuring others to do the same instead of pushing back.

Male, 5'7.5"/173cm and 130lb/59kg. I can't lose weight without sacrificing fitness. I can see a woman of my height going down to about 120lb/54.5kg since I actually used to weigh this much. She would need to be intentional (i.e. avoiding sports/muscle building, strict diet) or else she'd either gain weight (muscle or fat) or run into health problems (malnutrition, dehydration).

I like that the last one mentioned body fat % bc I think people are forgetting that Korean women are generally very short and with little muscle mass so for them, 40-50kg is/can be healthy, and 20-26% is easily maintainable for most people (I myself stay around 22 if regularly working out, but then I get closer to 25 if I've been too busy to workout regularly for a while). But at 5'8, 40kg would be about 35lbs underweight 😂

I think this kind of comment isn’t really helpful bc yes we are short, but 40-50 kg is still underweight for most east Asian people. South Korean women tend to be taller than japanese women (who are typically 5’0-5’3) so it’s actually insane that this weight is normalised as the goal.

      @mimiko7965 Рік тому +3

@@kitsterangel yeah my bad I worded my comment wrong. Like you say if you’re between 44-50 it’s still healthy for a lotta east Asian women. The problem is I’ve seen soooo much of the media and friends and family idealise below 45kg and feeling horrible for being 50 or over-as if those aren’t within the recommended healthy weight range-because the beauty standards like anywhere else idealise totally unrealistic standards. Like we all need to be 5’6 and 42kg? No thanks. Under 45 is underweight for most people, even East Asian women (44 is the lowest healthy weight limit for 5’0, 45 for 5’1, 47 for average height of East Asian women 5’2). I wanna be clear that the issue is absolutely not being under or overweight like we all have our own journeys and all of our bodies are beautiful. The real issue is that the beauty standards are constantly pressuring women to either be at the lowest limit or underweight through shame and scare tactics.

I'm like 155cm and I weigh 60kg. I was worried about my weight so I spoke with my doctor and asked her about it. She said that weight isn't actually as specific to your health as it seems. She said I'm perfectly healthy (not overweight in any way) and that muscles tend to weight way more than it seems so having a higher weight that it's usually seen, not always indicates that you're overweight. If you're worried about your body, ask a professional and don't go making weird diets to fit an standard weight. I don't even understand how can someone have a standard weight when all people is different. Having an standard weight of 40-50kg is just so stupid because it doesn't even have into consideration your height. BMI is also not indicative because when you build muscle (as it happened to me) It doesn't separate muscle from mass, so you might have a BMI overweight but you could be perfectly healthy. Just ask a professional and don't let standard affect your health specially with hard diets. Take care of yourself❤. It's fine if you want to be slimmer but do it while being healthy and demanding professional help, don't hurt yourself in the process

I’m 175cm and 56kg so in Korea I’m technically big. I would be unhealthy if I weighed less. In the US I’m considered skinny but in Korea, I struggle to buy clothes in the “normal” sizes. There’s also a thing called “free size” here, where they only make one size of a piece of clothing and everyone is supposed to fit in it. If you don’t, too bad, it’s not made for you. It’s difficult

Yo, I'm 160 cm tall and at one point I only weighed 37kgs and it was awful. My body was weak, my muscles weren't carrying me, the lack of muscles caused me severe back pain because there was nothing to support my spine, my hair was falling out and I would be dizzy or faint very easily. I worked on gaining some weight and I think I'm about 42kgs now and all I mentioned above has improvement tremendously. Health over aesthetics, people.

I hated myself and was literally just trying to kill myself slowly and get what I thought was attractive in the process. It's disturbing how idolised it is to be thin when what it can take for some of us to get to that weight is this life threatening.

But if you’re naturally skinny it’s okay but just be careful of not losing weight because if you’re already skinny and lose weight then it can be a sign of something’s going wrong.
By the way, no one should have the right to tell anything about your body. Their opinions are useless, listen to yourself, take care of your body and be sure to remind you that this body is the one making you alive, whether you like it or not, thank to it you’re alive.

I think it's fine to weight 45 or 50 kg if you're 150 to 163 cm and are a teenager or in your early 20ies. I weight 47 kg with 163cm in my early twenties. It's possible without starving or dieting. Of course genetics play a role too. I'm quiet narrow build. Narrow shoulders, hips, tighs, calves, small breasts and so on, regardless of my weight. I weight a lot more now but still am small, because of my small build.
I guess it works for most Korean women because they're small build too.
