If you would be interested in a bit of unpleasant history, Lone Pine is a very short distance from the Manzanar relocation camp where 30,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated for 4 years during World War II. The camp is being reconstructed by the National Parks and open for public visitation. This is part of US history we should all be aware of.
Yes, we stopped there and although the visitor center was closed (covid), we read all the signs and did the driving tour. We are homeschooling our kids and this was an important part of history to show them. I highly recommend people going to visit the site. Thanks for mentioning it here!

Completely on point about the Alabama Hills. One could spend a lifetime exploring the Owens Valley, Panamints, Sierra Nevada, White Mountains, Bristle cone pine forest and so on. The water wars and role of William Mulholland and Los Angeles is of interest. Glad you discovered it.

If you keep heading north on the 395 you will make it to Mammoth in a bout 2 hours. Lots of boondocking spots in the forest around there. Wooded mountains with lots of hiking trails, though snow in the winter. There is a really cool geothermal spot called hot creek off the 395 I think near Mammoth. That whole eastern Sierra area is beautiful and not very crowded. Well worth visiting!
I drove semi through that area on US 395 twenty years ago. Several vantage points along US 395 offer unbelievable views. And, a bit north of Lone Pine is the site of the Manzanar World War II Japanese detention camp. The geography and the remains of the old structures and their interpretive center provide quite the education for travelers.
Mt. Whitney is a very special place for me and my husband. We hiked to the top 19 years ago and my hubby proposed! We are now retired and traveling in our RV. Lone Pine and Alabama Hills is a destination of ours next year!

Stayed overnight last year on my way to a travel nurse gig in Cali (in one of the pullouts you showed) - absolutely beautiful!! If anyone's worried about cell service, finding a spot on the East side of the Alabamas (i.e. the Lone Pine side) you should get decent service - you can also hike up to the top of one of the hills (from the West side) to pick up enough signal to get a call out or check email
This is a really accurate assessment of this spot. We were sharing the same camp "site" area with them, in fact you can see our minivan and tent in the background, and my parent's airstream! It's an awesome area and really excellent for kids, our kids (and dogs too!) had an amazing time. Breathtaking views, and our site was only about 20 minutes to town even though it felt really out there. For water you can go to Portuguese Joe campground on the way in, and there's a spigot next to the bathrooms. Great video!

If you are able to get a site, at the base campground at 7,000 ft ( the start of the Mt Whitney climb ) is also incredible , it is just above the Alabama Hills
Yes from video too late! My mother owned a restaurant in Lone Pine for many years. She lived there for 30 years 69-02. Every time I visited in summers I'd hike and camp. No one around! Beautiful area.
Watched this last night...I was so overwhelmed with wishing we could do that, I had to go to bed. We have a trip planned for Spring break 2021 to Vegas staying at the Oasis. But, boondocking is what I'd really like to do. We've never really tested our RV out on how long/well the batteries, tanks, fresh water would last. Plus, we're gynormius...41ft...makes it tough. Amazing video - thank you!
Great post! The Alabama Hills are awesome! Not overcrowded like the Western Sierra side. Big enough to see something new every time we return. And the place is a drone paradise. Wife and I camped there during the big fire this last summer and it was an eerie slight to see the smoke drift over those mountains.
I'm glad you made it to the Alabama Hills. It's one of my favorite places. Potable water is usually available at nearby Tuttle Creek Campground, which is also a nice place. The last time I stopped at Boulder Creek RV Resort they had stopped letting guests use the dump station due to vandalism. Someone had thrown rocks down the drain and plugged it up. I don't know if that situation has been rectified. The WWII Manzanar Japanese Relocation Camp is a few miles north of Lone Pine and shouldn't be missed.
We were just there in October. It was our second time there and I will say that we arrived on a Tuesday afternoon and it was a challenge to find an open spot that would accommodate our rig (35 ft 5th Wheel). It is definitely getting more an more popular these days. It is definitely becoming a more popular destination. :)

There's another channel I used to subscribe to, but they stopped sharing "available for free RV camping" unless you're a paid Patreon subscriber under the guise of people trashing sites, threatening their closure. Translation: Availability is more competitive with the boom in RV camping and we feel we own it and we don't want to share it with others because we no longer have our choice of free camping. If they really want to protect these areas from closure, they should double their effort on getting the message out, not treat it like their secret fishing hole.

Forgot another fun place is Aston canyon off intestate 15 north of Barstow, steep drop off into the camp ground,if your trailer has good brakes not a problem....I would go in with my 1964 1/2 ton and a 26 foot trailer years ago and never had a problem..
My wife's mother grew up in Lone Pine. We've talked about going out there some day. Taking our Camper on a cross country voyage would be really cool. I didn't think this would be an option. Thanks.
We stayed at a campground on the south side of town in October 2019. We love the museum. But the Alabama Hills area was a real find. It’s almost magical. It’s definitely on our list to go back and visit. We also enjoyed the road up to Mount Whitney. We ate at the Whitney Portal Store store while there. Had one of the best BLT sandwiches we’ve ever eaten, albeit the most expensive at around $12!
Had a nice walk in Algonquin Provincial Park (Ontario, Canada) this afternoon. Our dog is tired tonight!! Drove through Mew Campground, which is open all winter. There is a little snow in the shaded areas. We were surprised to see several sites with tent on them. Even saw an Airstream!!!
I have always wanted to camp there. We have traveled up and down 395 and camped all along it. Just got back from the other side, Death Valley but didn't take the road to Lone Pine. Maybe next year. Beautiful video.

The key to be able to enjoy any area to its potential is planning. With good solar, plenty of fresh water, and propane, you will make the most of your time!
Went through that area a few months ago. Very pretty, Lone Pin was nice, wish the museums had been open. Didn't think about camping there, might have to do that in the future.
That's what I had planned for my wife and I to have been doing when I retired back in 2009. But her still being too young to retire she didn't want to quit her job and live off my retirement fund and travel. In January she'll be 61 and hopefully she'll retire when she's 62 and then maybe we can finally travel. That's if I am physically able to... You kids keep having fun and I'll be here watching be blessed in Jesus name... BBE 🤗🤗
Free water is also available at the visitor center in Lone Pine. They have a spigot in the parking lot near the walkway to the center. Also, do any food shopping in Bishop as Lone Pine only has one small very expensive market.
Stayed for a week last August. Averaged 106 each day and we only had two days without smoke from the fires (several days where you could barely see the mountains). Still enjoyed it even having to run the generator 12-18 hours a day. Closest neighbor was about 1/4 mile away. One thing to mention is that we have a 43' Th and very few spots are what you would call "level" and/or easy to get in or out. I did notice in your video that you went beyond where we scouted as I wasn't impressed with that short steep grade (just past the main parking area for hiking) in order to get farther into the area. Perhaps it's better back there. We scouted for a couple days and did find a terrific spot. About 2 miles in right on top of where they filmed a scene from "Rawhide". We now laugh about that stay since it was the most expensive boondocking we have ever done what with needing to run into town to restock our generator tank with gasoline to the tune of roughly $70 a day :( If you have a big rig you definitely have to scout out the area.

Yep, the "Ahills" are a jewel destination. We were there for the first time in May. I'm going back soon with our RZR to explore more of the trails. Nice episode, good drone shots.
Long,Long trailer. We used to have movies at school when I was in grade school in the 60s. The 8th graders sold us soda and popcorn to raise money for their 8th grade trip. Long,long trailer is one of the funniest movies we had. I'm sure that kind of thing is a big no no now, but life was free and easy in the swinging sixties.

So sorry Sean. It has to be hard living with someone, especially that person being from Alabama and Birmingham only 40 miles from Tuscaloosa, who is so confused about who to pull for. I have figured something out though, they tend to say War Eagle when they win and Tigers when they loose. There are a few more schools with the the split identity issues. It's a shame you didn't see catgphoto from Instagram and she has other sites, she is a full time truck camper and she was there at the same time, she does alot of hiking and photography. Wow that was great to hear that you have kind of done a little twist on the Long Long trailer the long long honeymoon.. my wife and I have a 1977 Dodge Mallard class C that we call Lucy. I wish I could share a picture of her here as in the back window there's a picture of Lucy looking out the window saying I Love Lucy 😅 and we have course have pictures of Lucille Ball and Ethel working out at the gym and it says every time I get the urge to work out.. I sit down and wait for the urge to pass... And of course we have the movie ready to be viewed on our DVD player. I really enjoy your videos and really give Christy credit for being so down to earth and unafraid.

Wow! We were just down the road (14) at Jawbone Canyon and Red Rock Canyon at the same time last week! And yes, we got the wicked wind as well.

Love camping in the Alabama Hills. There is a BLM campground there Tuttlel creak that does have dump station and water Mar - Oct.
How big of a rig can get in at Tuttle creek camp

And Tuttle creek has great internet service if you turn to the west and stay in one of the sites at the far end of the loop.

I did notice in your video that you went beyond where we scouted as I wasn't impressed with that short steep grade (just past the main parking area for hiking) in order to get farther into the area. Perhaps it's better back there. We scouted for a couple days and did find a terrific spot. About 2 miles in right on top of where they filmed a scene from "Rawhide". We now laugh about that stay since it was the most expensive boondocking we have ever done what with needing to run into town to restock our generator tank with gasoline to the tune of roughly $70 a day :( If you have a big rig you definitely have to scout out the area.
LOL...sounds like you were going to say that Alabama 'won one for the Nicker (Nick Saban)", but my guess is that you rethought it after listening to how it sounded in the edit room...Not sure if anyone else caught that! Keep up the good work!

Yep, the "Ahills" are a jewel destination. We were there for the first time in May. I'm going back soon with our RZR to explore more of the trails. Nice episode, good drone shots.

Long,Long trailer. We used to have movies at school when I was in grade school in the 60s. The 8th graders sold us soda and popcorn to raise money for their 8th grade trip. Long,long trailer is one of the funniest movies we had. I'm sure that kind of thing is a big no no now, but life was free and easy in the swinging sixties.

❤️ the Alabama Hills, glad you found it. The Alabama Hills Cafe has the best berry pie and cinnamon rolls. We always have breakfast there. The Whitney Portal trail is also an amazing hike.

So sorry Sean. It has to be hard living with someone, especially that person being from Alabama and Birmingham only 40 miles from Tuscaloosa, who is so confused about who to pull for. I have figured something out though, they tend to say War Eagle when they win and Tigers when they loose. There are a few more schools with the the split identity issues. It's a shame you didn't see catgphoto from Instagram and she has other sites, she is a full time truck camper and she was there at the same time, she does alot of hiking and photography. I'm sure you would enjoy her site and I'm sure you have many you follow but she is worth it and her utube is fantastic..I was at Alabama Hills for the 4th of july..great post...

Wow that was great to hear that you have kind of done a little twist on the Long Long trailer the long long honeymoon.. my wife and I have a 1977 Dodge Mallard class C that we call Lucy. I wish I could share a picture of her here as in the back window there's a picture of Lucy looking out the window saying I Love Lucy 😅 and we have course have pictures of Lucille Ball and Ethel working out at the gym and it says every time I get the urge to work out.. I sit down and wait for the urge to pass... And of course we have the movie ready to be viewed on our DVD player. I really enjoy your videos and really give Christy credit for being so down to earth and unafraid.
