Older people, refer to this situation as the "Slow Grind Down". This refers to the fact the practically everything is becoming more regulated, more difficult to do, less enjoyable and more expensive. When I first learn to fly radio controlled airplanes in the 1980s we went to a nice flying field in Texas with a 500 foot long concrete runway. We had ONE rule, ONE. Don't hit me with your airplane. Another item was, don't hit my car with your airplane. Although, that was not a rule, just a courtesy. I've taken the test and passed, registered with the friendly people at the FAA, I've got my AMA card, my TRUST certificate, and my FAA registration document, (that makes 3 documents I need to bring) and I'm all set to go to the flying field with my OS40 glow airplane to fly around. I feel like it's the quad copters that have brought all these rules to us. I've met many nice people that fly quad copters. I've learned it takes (practically) no skill at all. When the battery gets low the quad copter simply returns and lands next to your feet. Remember folks, the more something is regulated the less of that thing that will be.

I completely agree although I’m gonna have to point out that “cinematic style” drones with return to home are indeed easy to fly BUT fpv drones on the other hand do require skill. Sorry😂 just had to do us fpv flyers justice

Completed, printed and laminated. Print at 93% to allow edges to seal. Also, the sides printed on opposite sides, left and right, of the paper. I doubled each image and rotated one side 180 degrees to get cards that have the top on the same edge and double sided. May sound convoluted, but check by printing and see what you get then adjust as necessary.

So when I was 16...Im 38 now...The Academy of Model and Aeronautics had a similar test to take. People complaining about the rules don't realize that even model airplanes and model anything really back in the day still required you to take a test for your safety and everyone else's safety...I understand why it needs to be done of course...I was happy to take the new test and found out I had been doing some things wrong...Im glad I researched out of paranoia and took my TRUST test. Gives me relief that I now have a digital copy of my recreational license in my phone. Just wish I could have one in my wallet...lol. Stay safe everyone. Back in the day this test was written and had to be sent in by mail...so it took weeks and months to get certified...lol. Be happy it's so easy to do now...lol.

Thanks for this info. Took the TRUST test and passed. Had no clue there were s many laws out there. I was led to believe that buying a drone under 250 grams meant you were free to do what you wanted. Well I got slapped in the face fisrt time I tried to fly because my app said you cannot fly in that area. I was about 4.4 miled from a small airport. Sis find the work around though after I got home. Was trying to find a place to practice flying the drone.

Just an FYI - I contacted the FAA (I'm also an A&P Maintenance Technician) and they said that while sub-250g UAVs aren't REQUIRED to be registered, there is no prohibition to registering them, if the owner chooses to. Registration numbers then have to be clearly marked on the UAV as with the required ones.

There are four different types of learners. I am a visual learner I learn more from video and audio. The Fleming VAK/VARK model, one
of the most common and widely

    types of learning styles, categorized
the various types of learning styles
    as follows: visual learners, auditory

Thank you for the summary and FAQ! _Just_ starting out flying: you mentioned the "9 things you need to fly recreationally". It there a link to or reference for that list?
    EDIT: found my own answer
    * Have a current registration
    * Fly only for recreational purposes
    * Follow the safety guidelines of a community based organization
    * Keep your drone within your visual line of sight
    * Give way and do not interfere with any manned aircraft
    * Fly at or below 400’ in controlled airspace and only with prior authorization
    * Fly at or below 400’ in uncontrolled airspace
    * Comply with all airspace restrictions
    * Pass The Recreational UAS Safety Test

Grey, per FAA website under trust, it states
    “What is a recreational flyer?
A recreational flyer is someone who operates their drone for fun or personal enjoyment purposes only.
How to fly a drone recreationally:
1 If your drone weighs more than .55 lbs, register your drone through the FAA's DroneZone
    2 Pass TRUST
3 Follow safety guidelines on the FAA website or of an existing aeromodelling organization”
When I read this, I’m under the impression you still don’t need to complete TRUST if you are under .55. Can you clarify?

    • @PilotInstitute
      @PilotInstitute  3 роки тому

You still must complete TRUST, however you are not required to register your drone if you use it solely for recreation and it is under .55lbs.

Its a great idea, free training that all drone pilots should have but i think it should be yearly to include updates in drone laws. Still free and possible you could sign up for reminder when its time to update your education, sort of like CE's continuing education classes. This way you keep the training and education going and its all centralized.

The test is a breeze! I only stumbled on one question, and was able to go back, to answer it again.
While many might scoff at this test, I think it's VERY important, that all people flying drones should know the stuff on this test, and adhere to the regulations.
While this won't stop the idiots out there knowingly flying illegally, it will make it easier for the FAA and law enforcement to do something, when they find one of these Richard Craniums harassing and causing issues with the general public.

I know people who are off the grid and live a simple life in remote areas who have a drone. I will make sure the ones I know of get the message when I go camping, however where they are is not where anyone would likely be asking for a certificate. My question is: At what point in time will the certificate be required? Obviously, not everyone will be getting the word immediately.

@@PilotInstitute Now the question is, will they even have a sign up at retail stores selling drones pointing them to the new rules? (I know, silly question. No, no they won't).

I thought the same. But I completely understand.

What about a person who purchases a drone and doesn't know a test is required? Poor guy could break a FEDERAL law when he thinks he's just playing with his toy. Leans towards entrapment.

Certainly not everything you need to know on the test. At the end I commented on Facebook and I will here, your "Deep Dive" free courses on the DJI drones are essential to understanding what a pilot does not know! I recommend (ed) taking all the courses, even though I do not have the drones. There is a huge amount of great information and repetition of LAANC, sectional reading and such is all to the benefit when you have no memory! I also watch as many "good" UA-cam videos as I find and keep a library on my drive for reference and to help out club members. The word has already been spread on this video and the test. What do you do if no recognized rules in your area? Looks like legally you cannot fly? Bureaucrats are just so much fun as they try to build their little kingdoms on subjects they do not fully understand!

Greg, I just completed the test, but when I attempted to download the cert to my phone, it kept saying image couldn’t be retrieved. I ended up doing a screen shot, but wanted to give you a heads up.
