Snake Lake Off-Roading 4x4 Trip (Part 1) - Tahoe National Forest

  • On this 4wheeling adventure, we travel to the California Gold Country and do a loop called Snake Lake. The loop starts at the main Gold Lake Campground area heads Southwest along the South shore of Gold Lake and then cuts up Northwest along the West side of Gold lake where there's nice 4x4 camps to choose from. We pass by those camps and turn left heading SouthWest until we turn Northwest on a trail that connects up with the Snake Lake Loop. Once we connect with the loop, we head North passing by Oakland Pond and then start descending into Snake Lake heading West. The drop into Snake Lakes is very steep. The video doesn't accurately show how steep this drop is. If you don't have dual transfer cases, you'll be riding the brakes down the whole descent to the shore of Snake Lake. We drove around the lake and camped on the North side at a nice outcropping with a view of the lake. We spent our first night there.
    It is recommended that you do the Snake Lake Loop in a counterclockwise direction. Going up that steep drop from Snake Lake would be a huge chore most likely involving lots of winching. But, if you want a challenge, you could try it and if worse comes to worse you could always exit going back the way you came.

      Glad you enjoyed it Mike. We did have a great time. Hey, not my wheel bearings. They've all been replaced. It was challenging for sure and the drop into Snake lake was a bit scary due to how steep it was. The video didn't do it justice. It was a serious fall line trail straight down.

    Seriously sick! I just bought a 3rd gen beginning of the summer after watching all your repair videos- 200k miles, emissions light is on, and has lived in Illinois for 20 years so I got some frame rot repair in my future. Jealous of your California rigs haha. Can’t wait to get her into wheelin shape!

    Great video. I believe you when you say the video doesn't do justice to the steepness, but it was evident from the way your trucks crept down that trail.
    Obviously, one of the great things about getting so far from civilization is the sheer quietude (cowbells excluded). You just can't replicate that down where the people live.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  3 роки тому +1

      Glad you liked it. Yeah, getting out and away from the masses is healthy. It's crazy how loud those freaking cow bells can be. The cows were far away from us but we could hear them clearly because we were in a granite bowl and the sound carried.
      When I 4wheel, I don't listen to music while driving. I just listen to the sound of my rig crawling along. Our lives are full of noise and I love the peace you get being away from the city and all the noise that comes with it. I don't get the guys who crank music when they're in a beautiful peaceful area. I don't like it.

      It's fairly challenging no doubt. We all did a little damage, mostly to our armor like skid plates and rock rails. But, I took some bumper and fender flare damage and so did a couple of the others in that tight boulder constriction. The drop into Snake Lake is very steep. It's no joke!

    Your videos how came a long way, thank you for your time how do you chase down vibrations with these Tacoma‘s I have an LT double cab four-wheel-drive I’ve done the tie rod ends into an outer steering rack and pinion bushings center support bearing it’s got 170,000 miles on it I’ve done the joints except for the cardinal, seems tight. It’s a TRD , I’ve done tires and rims. The wife’s getting a little frustrated in the money I spent and keep spending I know it’s a solid rust free truck. Better than a car payment. Any ideas what to do next football joints do that, I did the front differential bushings to

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  3 роки тому +1

      Mostly front end vibrations are incorrectly balanced tires, but sometimes it can be something in the rear, like your driveshaft. But if you’re looking to refresh more items up front, the lower control arm bushings are a good next step

      There's trails that start right above Sierra City that lead towards the Sierra Buttes that are pretty easy trails. If you get a mapping program like Gaia, you'll see the network of trails. Henness Pass Road from Jackson Meadows Reservoir towards Pliocene Ridge Road which is near the town of Alleghany is fun mellow trail. Start exploring. If a trail gets too gnarly, just turn around.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  4 місяці тому +1

      That one obstacle with the big boulder would be problematic. It's a tight constriction that sends you into the big boulder when your left rear tire runs up against a smaller rock on the left pushing you into the boulder. I think the only way you could avoid right rear body damage is by traveling over the rock on the left, which can be difficult. We ended up winching our buddy Anwar over the rock to avoid body damage on this 5th Gen 4runner. If you're running bigger tires, like 35s or 37s, you could probably get over the rock on the left and avoid body damage.
