  • The Gold Lake Basin Area is a great place to relax and hit the trails. There is available OHV camping along the trail next to Gold Lake. Camping is first come first serve and is available without a fee. Most of the campsites line the shores of the lake and can be reached by stock four wheel drive vehicles, so come early to get a great spot.
Snake Lake Trail is the most difficult trail in the area and gets it's name from one of the numerous lakes in the area. The Pacific Crest Hiking Trail also crosses the trail a few times and offers a great reason to take a walk. The trail is run out and back with a loop at one end of the trail.
The trail is more difficult if the loop portion is run in the clockwise direction. This will require you to drive up Snake Lake Hill, which is very steep and loose. If you would like to attempt going up Snake Lake Hill it is suggested that you have at least one locker.

Wheeling and Camping go hand in hand. What is your favorite camping destination that is only accessable by an off road vehicle?

Gold Lake! Did y’all get into Gold Canyon, by chance? I think I’m the only one to run a stock Tahoe through in 2017, lol. Had to bail from this trail, though, with much rock stacking and hilift jacking.

Thank you. I will say that the only thing that makes CA bearable is the amazing wheeling that is in the area.

We just did this trail over the weekend. We were shooting for camping at Gold Lake but it was packed so we continued on and found the snake lake trail. Sadly video does NOT do that part of the trail justice. It is steep as shit!! Where the one guy who lost his tire...when I went through it, I got a little squirelly. Was definitely a pucker factor. Luckily I was spotted through it unscathed. We camped down at the bottom for a couple days, then headed out towards Little Deer Lake on Sunday. I was happy we didn't have to climb back out the way we came down. While going through the squeeze, I apparently hit my rear fender and dented it. I noticed when we aired back up at the staging area. No biggie..it's plastic and will pop back out. ;-) Definitely a hairy section of trail but really pretty area. It was very quiet camping down there as opposed to all of the people at Gold Mountain. Only had some PCTers hike through and only saw a couple of rigs pass through as well. Only one jeep camped nearby Saturday night...and that was it. Will definitely need to go back to check out some other camp spots we drove by.

Video never does the obstacles justice. Rocks always look smaller, and hills never look as steep as they do in person. the squeeze isn't a joke either. We had a couple of the rigs get bumps and bruises going thorough that section. I really want to make it back up to this area and do some camping out there.

It amazes me how video just cannot capture steepness of a trail. That trail is CRAZY steep.

O trust me I know! Video and pictures never do it justice, no matter how hard you try to capture it.

I plan on camping out on the side of the lake at the Gold Lake 4x4 Campground and hit the trail when we get a chance. Is the Snake Lake trail hard to find from the Gold Lake 4x4 Campground?

No it’s not. You just keep driving straight through the camping area and stay right at the forks
