I have just got a new PC rig as my previous PC was 6 years old (i9-9900k, 2080ti, 32gb RAM). The new rig is 7 9800X3D, 4080 super, & 64gb 6000hz DDR5. I am running MSFS 2024 with a mixture of Ultra and High settings, TAA, 4k, and not FG. My performance is very good with high frame rates, but as you have seen, I am seeing very stable frames and a very smooth experience. I haven’t tested much at high quality airports and other traffic, but I hoping the 7 9800X3D will take the strain in it’s stride.
Ive had the same remarkable performance gain with FSLTL on vatsim. Before i could lose like 40fps at heathrow when it was lots of traffic, now i lose like nothing. Amazing.
btw how do we get FSLTL to work on the new game assuming we already have it for msfs20? do we have to download and install again so we have 1 version for msfs20 and other other for msfs24?
@@JamesC1981 you just need to move/copy the "fsltl-traffic-base" folder from your 2020 community folder -> 2024 community folder, or make a link to it using Addon linker.

What's crazy is in DCS when they introduce multi core technology my FPS went from 40fps to 95fps on my 5600x3d. But in MSFS it just went 3fps and more consistent. I think there multi core technology is not true they just add the technology to their servers and it's streaming it smoother to us . 2024 looks streamed and clarity is a issue the resolution is not what it says
Excellent video. Very informative. I have a good rig but I'm holding off for about three months till FS2024 has a chance to hopefully settle down and some bugs & issues are addressed. FS2020 is running perfectly for me so I'm happy enough to wait a while longer to change over. Also, I like the big jets so waiting for PMDG to organise themselves for porting over their aircraft.
Great to see working fine for you even at 4k with everything on. I was somehow impacted by something that is causing a very annoying lag when the fps drops to 15 and below, sometimes even 5 fps. It seems some type of VRAM issue or bug , others are reporting even with 12gb or more VRAM which is very weird. Thanks for sharing, it seems that performance is ok for those who did not had same issue as mine. At least main thread seems to have really got optimized , my issue is that I cant play that with a 3070 8gb, lower spec CPU but with 32 gb, should be on specs but it's really far from smooth mostly on the ground and when arriving to airports or new areas...
I have the same problem. Once I load into a high fidelity aircraft like the Fenix into Aerosoft Frankfurt for example, the VRAM of my 3070 fills up immediately and the frames go down, with no chance of recovery. All with medium settings. The same conditions in 2020 however do not result in that chaos at all despite way higher settings, and while I can still provoke it to fill the VRAM, it empties again after a short while in 2020. So still some work to do in 2024 I feel...
Rule of thumb for Frame Generation. FPS should be >30 before you think about using it. Everything below is a to low sample size to insert a smooth frame in between the rendered frames.
Hey not sure if you know, microsoft introduced a new setting called dynamic fps by default i think its set to 40 fps and that probably why your frame gen wont exceed 66 fps, with frame gen i get over a 100 fps in 2024
Unfortunately, at the moment, my fenix A320 can't configure my throttles on my airbus thrustmaster throttle quadrant the usually cockpit calibration dosent work
Great! But... what's your internet bandwidth? I don't see many people telling us that in their vids. That seems to be more of a determinant than hardware spec in 24 from what I've heard. Given that you already have a reasonable PC, and good bandwidth, you're winning. I'll still be on 2020 for a good while I suspect - with a primeval bandwidth of 20-30 Mbits 😞
Hi, Computer Science student here. I don’t really know about your technical background, but I can’t agree with your conclusion. While it is true that FPS increased I don’t think you realized why exactly that is. If you compare GPU utilization between the two games you can clearly see that in 2024 the GPU is pegged at 99%. This means that in this case the game is GPU Limited. You can also see that on every single CPU core, it is not at 100%. This shows that the optimizations worked and now to get more FPS you would need a better GPU or turn down your graphics settings, but a better CPU wouldn’t get you more frames. Sadly, in 2020 you couldn’t see the utilization of the individual cores, but I would suspect that core zero would be at 100% while the others would hover around 10. At the same time, the GPU was only around 50%. So then if you add more load to CPU core zero by for example, adding add-ons you would lose frames. In 2024 you don’t lose frames, if you add more content because that mostly affects the CPU and there’s still enough overhead for it. I think you focused too much on the game indicator saying it is limited by thread or GPU, while in reality it was only limited by GPU.
Yes, it’s reporting 99%, but pay attention to the power draw. For the 4080 Super, the power draw isn’t particularly high despite it allegedly being tapped out. I’ve seen this behaviour before when running a different, lower powered CPU with my 4080 super. I’ve known it to report 99% usage with lower than expected power draw. Starfield would do this. Run the same test with a beefier cpu and you still see 99% but with higher GPU power draw and subsequently higher fps.
I don't think this is the way it works. The GPU is making work for itself, especially if it is using DLSS, which is an artifical intelligence, and frame generation, which is a preditive AI. In other words, _GPU is synthisizing content on its own_ . The AI in Google says it this way: "A GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) enhances an image by performing complex calculations on each individual pixel in parallel, allowing for faster and more detailed image processing tasks like applying filters, sharpening, color correction, and anti-aliasing, resulting in a significantly improved visual quality compared to processing on a CPU alone." When a GPU is running at 100%, it is becaues it is attempting to improve the data provided to it by the CPU and it will do so at its maxium capacity, but that will still be faster than the CPU could feed it data. In the case of frame gen, it will plug in as many frames as it can until it gets to 100 and when it gets to 100%, it is simply doing all it can in the time between frames coming from the CPU. This is a lot of work, and this is why a 4090 costs four times more than a 13900K processor chip. The GPU is getting far more data from 2024 than it did from 2020. It is likely that 2024 uses many more shaders than 2020, and Shaders are run on a computer's graphics processing unit (GPU), which has hundreds of cores that are well-suited for doing many things at once. This allows shaders to offload rendering tasks from the CPU, which can then be used for other computations.
Here is an example of what I mean. Go to 2:40 in the video and note the CPU latencey is 24.2ms, while the GPU latencey is only 16.3ms. Note that here, the GPU is only 66% utliized. The GPU has simply maximized every pixel and is essentially waiting around on the processor to give it more to do. Now, look at what happens when he switchs to 2024 (3:10). The GPU is now working much more efficently and while the CPU still has about the same (23.4ms) the GPU has gone up about the same latency, (24.6ms) and has become about the same limit to the speed as the CPU is. This means that 2024 programing is much more efficient at spreading the workload over more cores, so it is passing more workload to the GPU than it did in 2020, so unlike with 2020, where the GPU maximized the video and was loafing, now it has to work full speed to keep up. This also explains why frame gen does not give the same big boosts that it did in 2020 in areas that have a lot of textures and new objects (rock, grass, trees, etc). In busy areas, doing all of the varous textures and object details coming from the multiple cores of the CPU just makes it work harder, but as you go higher and the object details go down, the GPU has more time to predict frames for frame gen. Go to 8:20 and you can see another example of how the GPU workload goes up with 2024. You can hear the commentator say that in 2020, if you used frame gen, you could expect to see maybe double the frames while sitting at the gate, but in 2020, the frame rate improvement with frame gen was minimal, but at altutude, where there is not as much detail, the CPU is not sending a lot of object detail, so the GPU can race ahead and fill up the extra time with more frames. The more detail in a scene, the harder the GPU has to work to do all of the things it does to maximize the quality of the graphics. If the tester were to set the graphics settings to low or medium, the then there is less synthisis that needs to be done, and the GPU utiliztion would decrease.
So I am currently in a process of upgrading my old PC which has been treating me well during the last years. Its basically been enough for games I was playing since I am not a hardcore gamer per say. I always wanted to get into flight sim and this editions carreer mode has me really wanting to play this game. So my questions is: What is the decent hardware for this simulator? I really dont want to get new gpu because I dont need more powerful gpu for anything else (I am running the gtx 1650). Would this gpu be enough to run at 1080p at around medium settings and especially, what would be the best low-end cpu to pair it with? And of course, the RAM to go with it?
Hey mate. I'm running msfs 2020 on mostly ultra settings apart from terrain LOD on a Lenovo Legion 10300h, 1660ti laptop with 32 gb of corsair vengeance ram, but only with the kind help of lossless scaling, which seems to cope with most situations (you must run in window mode btw and it will go full screen when you start scaling), however, I can also lower settings and comfortably do without lossless. I've heard that the hardware jump isn't too bad for 2024, It's more about streaming, so a good internet connection should maybe be your main concern. Personally I'm going to wait until 2024 is running well before I migrate from 2020. If you're just getting in to this, you may consider getting 2020 first on sale, there's plenty of content, free and paid (most of it currently on sale btw and a lot of it will be compatible with 2024 apparently) and more than enough to keep you happy for a good while :)
Great video thanks, it's good to know as I'm soon upgrading my GPU to the same as yours, but what do you think about the CPU. I'm only on a 3800x and trying to find what would be best... Ie the same as yours or the 12 core 9500x? 95% fly in VR so really need to get that minum 30FPS.
I think the generally accepted wisdom is to get an X3D chip, so the 7800X3D or new 9800X3D. Note both of those are the newer AM5 socket, meaning you'll need a new motherboard and probably a whole new computer. The 5800X3D, which AirNott, and I use, is the older AM4 socket and is the same as your current 3800X, so in that case you could upgrade the CPU, buy some extra RAM (if needed), get your new GPU and you'd be good to go. So it basically boils down to budget - got the cash, go 9800X3D, don't have the cash, go 5800X3D. Please note I don't run VR, so I can't tell you anything about performance with it. Have a look at the 'Hardware Unboxed' UA-cam channel for loads of comparisons between various AMD and Intel CPU's for gaming, they have more detail than you can poke a stick at!
What do these figures imply for people who need to buy a new CPU for the MSFS2024? I was thinking of getting an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, the successor to the popular 7800X3D, but Microsoft itself recommends CPUs with more cores. I'm now confronted with the decision between the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X (more cores) and the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D (better single core performance), but I have no idea which CPU is better for MSFS2024. Thank you for your work!
Get the 9800X3D. The V-cache plays a significant role in msfs performance, and it will certainly give better results than any higher core processers, just due to the 3D V-Cache.
With the 7800x3d i get stable 60 FPS without FG on my RX7900XT on High Settings and i use the FPS-Target-Option in the Settings. Its grate 🎉😅 The Problem is your CPU-Mainthreat. Lower the LOD or use Dynamic-LOD that is the Key for the higher FPS!
While 2024 is filthy with bugs, the reality is that it is a far more efficent program and running 2024 on High End gives better graphics than running 2020 on Ultra does.
Over a week now & still 97% I have tried with my vpn on vpn off all my drives still no luck😡& the default ATC in2020 is total garbage, why can't they fix that?
My issues all seem to mostly be about usability atm, things working or not working as they should be - I always seem to have bugs, either with cockpits, cameras or switching cameras. So I feel graphics and eventually fps will be good or end up better - but for me I’m in the phase at this time of do I want to play the sim that’s so buggy, unreliable & base planes all seem to be poor in one way or another for me atm. Yes stutters on landing seem resolved but atm I don’t feel like I want to play it with its current state. Each day or so I try then get disappointed with something. I am also very disappointed there has only be one minor patch in a week! I thought if bad & especially in the state it is that we would get daily patches & updates - yet nothing ! Hmmm ❤😔
I've been running 1440p on a 3060 with settings inline with my 2020 settings pretty much. Generally getting around 30 on the ground and 40-60 in the air
@MarcDavison I've been riding in the 4090,, and if I add any extra add-ons in flight sim 2020 my frame rate will be a little less than yours,, just be careful which add-ons you are using and you might need to have a few tests,, but your graphics card should be just fine
@MarcDavison I really enjoy watching long documentaries on UA-cam as well so I've decided just to watch them on my tablet and it's helped out a little bit
I've upgraded to 9800X3D 4090 and I am now used to 90fps at 7100x2140 everything maxed including objects detail on 2 55" OLED TVs. Its a totally different level to 2020, no comparison... and no I could never go back to 30FPS 😂
@@deloford In a sim you cannot tell the difference. If I showed you butter smooth 30 fps you would be able to tell :-) In a first person shooter sure! But not a sim. I've have my sim at 60fps and Ive have my sim a 30 and at 30 you cannot tell the difference. In fact it's better for your GPU because it's not constantly changing hi fps and producing more heat
@photoeducationbydaniel Anyone can 100% can tell the difference. Particularly when moving your head around or landing and making very small adjustments. Yea the difference between 30FPS and 90FPS is absolutely huge and we never had this performance and visual quality in 2020.
Frame Generation is NOT performance. You don't get more frame, you get interpolated frames, which are lower quality and add visual artifacts, AND they add lag. I prefer to lock my fps to 30 on my laptop than using FG.
Yeah frame is bad for fidelity in a flight some TAA & no dlss frame gen is always better but I guess if your lower than 30fps then it’s a must to use - although my old card doesn’t have frame gen so yeah not the best situation for me
most people understand that but I think some have the preference of higher fps to move camera, etc. I think as long as fps normal is 30 fps or above using FG is ok, the issue is like using it to reach 30 fps while the actual fps is below that, that would be very annoying. Still valid, I dont like the DLSS either, it makes the panel reading blurred like if you need glasses

@marten8148 I have the 9800X3D and it absolutely munches 2024. Getting seriously high frame rates with everything maxed
@@deloford Just pre-ordered the 9800X3D. Thanks for the insights!
Did you reduce the FSLTL texture size or is it default 4096
With the 7800x3d i get stable 60 FPS without FG on my RX7900XT on High Settings and i use the FPS-Target-Option in the Settings. Its grate 🎉😅 The Problem is your CPU-Mainthreat. Lower the LOD or use Dynamic-LOD that is the Key for the higher FPS!
Yes, we’ll be investigating optimum settings soon - good to hear your performance is solid!
do you fly in 1440p?
Mine peaks at 60 (120 with frame gen) 4090 and a 7950x3d everything maxed. Tried with the bits you tried here and wow, so stable. I'm impressed.
While 2024 is filthy with bugs, the reality is that it is a far more efficent program and running 2024 on High End gives better graphics than running 2020 on Ultra does.
Great video
Less of a bottleneck with older equipment with 2024.
how can you tell by this that your main thread is limited? I dont know how you tell that.
It tell you beneath the fps counter
@AirNOTT oh damn that was easy lol thank you
I dare you to try the default TBM 930 under the same conditions… that plane destroys my FPS in 2024
Strange yesterday i checked tbm at charles de gaulle paris i was getting 55 to 60 fps. 1440p res amd 5800x rtx 4070 super in high settings
Yes, that's right and because of glass cockpit. Try to set refresh rate of cocpit to Medium. It'll help but not too much I'm afraid.
@ that’s not it at all. I’ve tried plenty of other glass cockpit planes
maybe more stable fps in 2024, but otherwise the difference is minimal.
how did you get the FSLTL to work 2024? :(
i can't figure it out
Copied it between community folders
@ okay I’ll give that a go
Over a week now & still 97% I have tried with my vpn on vpn off all my drives still no luck😡& the default ATC in2020 is total garbage, why can't they fix that?
Tried reinstalling and/or validating your install files?
@@AirNOTT Ok I will try that, ty
Hmmm ❤😔
It's all good until you try VR with pimax.
will i be good with a 3070?
Video soon (I have a spare 3070 that I intend to test!)
That should work perfectly and I definitely don't recommend fs realistic, it's an absolute disaster on frame rates
Can we use FSLTL and BATC in 2024?
FSLTL, yes. Haven’t tried BATC yet
BATC yes I have been using it works perfectly
Is it available for 2024 the fenix.
Yep, just flew it live on stream 🙂
@@AirNOTT thanks, where best place to buy it, there main site or will it come to fs store thanks
@ceff01 currently you can get it exclusively on their website I believe
@ceff01 if you google fenix download the fenix installer to your PC then dowload direct from there
I'll say this you dont need more than 30fps for a sim. Both 2020 and 2024 fly excellent at 30 fps
Yea the difference between 30FPS and 90FPS is absolutely huge and we never had this performance and visual quality in 2020.
its big difference in VR stable 30 fps to stable 45 fps.Once you fly in VR you wont play arcade 2d mode again.
@@deloford but in a flight sim where everything moves by slowly no it doesn't make any difference :-)
COME ONNN YESSSSSS
At least 2020 works just fine.
@@hflxyep indeed there defo is slight individual lines of when to use for benefits against the negatives - it a problem I like to have but alas I’m still stuck in an old gpu camp but hope for upgrades maybe next year
input lag barely makes a dent in the experience in a slow paced game, especially flight sim, the benefits of frame gen far outweight the cons
It's a life saver in VR. My fps went to barely playable and headache-inducing to great.
Since the game core is still the FSX one, cpus occupancy is just fake, wake up little Susy
Great video. Thanks so much.
