- In "The Wake-Up Call", Taryl shows William (and you at home) how to fix a sticking deck engagement on a Craftsman/Poulan/Weed Eater/Central Park 42'' riding lawn mower. Prior to the fix, Taryl receives a 2 am wake-up call for service, much to Taryl's annoyance. And There's Your Dinner!!

I have the opposite of this prob
I have an issue maybe you can help with. I've got a Troy Bilt 1842 that when the blades are engaged it takes a while before they get up to speed. I've replaced all the pulleys and belts
Jason Lackey probably belts not tight enough you should be able to adjust them
Taryl you are the greatest. I have learned so much from you. What I like most about you is the fact that you cover everything. Thank you for your service.
Taryl is king!
Taryl, you're the best! Very informative plus lots of fun. I'm an old guy (68) and remember hanging out in machine shops and gas stations in rural NC. Started out as a kid fixing flats (a weekly event) on my bicycle, then trying to get my first $50 junker Ford on the road. You could hang out with the older guys, learn something and maybe even get a sandwich and RC Cola if you swept up the place, cleaned out the grease pit and dumped the ash trays. You take us back to the old days! Mechanics back then didn't have clean clipboards, clean fingernails, wear ties and girly earrings! Back to the present... a month ago I successfully replaced my Craftsman's blades after watching another of your videos. Now I want to pull my deck again to check a few things you covered here. Thanks again! You really should be on prime time TV!
So I just changed my spindles, pulleys, blades, cleaned the deck, and fixed my blade disengaging issue. All thanks to your video. Probably took a little longer than it should have but hey it was my first time. Thanks for the great tutorial!!
These videos are so funny and educational at the same time. Thank you for posting these. You have saved us all so much money and entertained us at the same time. Please keep posting more videos.
Mr Gross. Thank you so much for your instructional videos!!!!! I have a 2005, Crapsman LT2000 garden tractor, that I am keeping alive. Somehow, I sheared off the support that suspends the deck, after a pulley spline "rounded out." I had already replaced the engine with a real Kohler, Command, from a "Briggs -n-Scrappin," and numerous spindle replacements. I was ready to give up and trash the "tractor" because of the sheared support. A neighbor had a old rusted deck. I cut off the three welded tabs, that support the idler pulleys, and mig welded it my deck. You inspired me to not quit. I have a kubota tractor with loader, backhoe, and belly mower. But, I am challenged to keep the Crapsman alive. 90% of these mowers are made by MTD, a corporation that began in Cleveland, Ohio, 15 miles from me, in the 1930's, by real machinists. Thank you so much. Junior, William, Ronny, and that "Taryl" guy, are a really a good crew. Ron
Searching the internet to find why my mower deck wasn't working see this video, was like there is no way this is going to be informative. BOY WAS I WRONG!!! probably the best video I've seen about fixing lawn mowers
These guys are perfeshinals. Remind me of the Red Green Show.
My Ariens 42" gear driven rider has the exact same deck. I had some broken blade spindle mounts and had the problem with the blade not disengaging. This was the exact fix I needed and I learned all I need to know about my mower deck from this video. I just got done gooberin' it up and it works perfectly now.
Taryl, Just wanted to say this is a great, informative, and very helpful video. Thanks, you saved me a couple of hundred dollars by being able to finish this job myself instead of taking it to my local repair shop. Keep up the good work. "There's your dinner"!!!!
+John Reed Theres yur dinner!
called a parts place today & while on hold there recording actually mentioned Taryl's channel & said to check it out. That was pretty cool.
This is April 6 2017, I just came across this video my younger brother has this problem so I can now fix it for him that you so very much for the video ur the man
Simply the best mechanic on you tube! 5 stars!
Bob Mccann I agree.
I learned More about lawn mower decks in this One video than I have searching the internet
not2fast4u2c You mean, the inscreen.
Me too! He is funny and awesome!
I can def agree with that!
Thanks for the great video Taryl! It was as if it was custom made for me. I have a Craftsman LT2000 year 2008 and my problem was the exact opposite. My blades would NOT spin half the time when engaged. Last weekend I dropped the deck and applied your fix to the letter and, PRESTO, smooth as silk now. I even used the anti-sieze goop like you. Keep up the great work. I learn a lot. Your videos are not run of the mill. They address real world problems. Even the odd problems that only an experienced guy like you and your crew see. In this case, you used your engineering skill and mind to solve the problem WITHOUT new parts. You were right, anyone else would have simply ordered new parts. Keep it up. I need my dinner!
This is one of the first T.F.A. videos I ever watched. Probably 8 years ago. It came in handy then and again today as my new used Craftsman mower wasn't wanting to engage the blades. Ground the divots out and goobered the deck up with never-seize and she's a happy lawn tractor again! Thanks again Taryl!
Got my first riding mower, a used Craftsman 2000LT and this was about the most educational video I have seen on deck maintenance! Thanks brother! Gonna go grind out a couple parts to get that engagement working again!
Crapsman, you ain't listenin, like Scub Scout, Briggs & Scratton. Etc
Thank you so freaking much, man. Taryl, you saved my biscuits with this one. I've been trying to figure out why my blades won't disengage for a long time. Haven't fixed it yet, but from what I have gathered, going down there and pulling and wiggling and observing, this is definitely my problem. Great work!
This was the first Taryl video I ever watched one of the best helped me fix my mower 3 years ago
Taryl is the MAN! I couldn't have done the repair without this video and my mower works GREAT. Thanks so much, Taryl!
That has to be one of the best repair videos complete with comedy I have seen. Thanks for sharing Taryl.
I'm glad we have the Interscreen Taryle, you've taught me a lot. Thanks Dactyl
Simple instructions and straight forward on how to look for other problems. Thank you.
This was spot-on for my tractor. Thank you for taking the time to make the video. Really helped me out.
Dude, you have helped me a lot more than you'll ever know, I have an older Craftsman, and Cub Cadet, yours vids have helped me rebuild both and save thousands, THANX!
I thought I just had a bad clutch cable but after watching this video I had found my problem, a little work on the bench grinder and i'm all fixed up. Thanks for the video.
Taryl daktoll was watching your vids on Sunday morn and you just happened to hit on one of problems I have on one of my tractors. U are da man. Do rag thanks you. Love your vids man.
You are amazing. A customer brought in this exact same tractor. I got it running like brand new and went to mow with it and I couldn't get the blades to disengage. Watch this video and did the exact same thing you showed and BAM. Engages and disengages as it should. Hes got a beautiful running and mowing tractor now. Thank you Taryl.
Just fixed this issue on my Craftsman LT1000 thanks to the video! Thanks Taryl!
Out of all the other vids on this subject, YOURS is definitely the best at showing where everything GO’s! Thanks!
TARYL EXCELLENT VIDEOS, EVERYONE OF THEM.THEY ARE PERFECTLY CLEAR. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK.
By far the best . Thanks for the humor while doing the labor , that was great and crystal clear
Taryl, You save me time and money. I can't thank you enough!
Taryl you are the reason i have gained so much knowledge for tractors. Thank you so much for everything.
I can see clearly now!!!!! A full explanation of what is going on and why it doesn't, Thank you very much for being out there.
Thank you Taryl! This was the exact problem I was having with my mower!
Not only is this a VERY informative video it also talks to you in a way that even if you have no mechanical abilities you can fix what is wrong with your mower. Very detailed, step by step! Awesome, not to mention very funny! Goober it up! Goober it up!
Thanks for the video and advice. I bought a used mower for my son and had this exact problem and basically the same mower. After watching your video I was able to get it up and running. Thanks again.
Awesome! I have this exact same Craftsman LT200. Mine was seized in the same place. Replaced both pulleys 173437 & 173437 (they are slightly different), cleaned up all the surfaces with a wire brush attachment for a drill, used anti-seize and this video. No longer chews the deck belt and disengages perfectly. Thank you sir!
(0:40) "hold on, I have to take the cap off"
- hilarious!
Great instruction vid as always
want to say thank you, you saved me 200 dollars that is how much the local repair place wanted. keep the great videos coming
I like the humor in your videos! And the content as well. Very informative.
The "BEST" video of this repair. I have always used Never Seize on every nut and bolt.
I am glad I hung in past the humor at the beginning because the rest was VERY informative. Lots of great additional tips! Thanks!
Taryl, thanks for the great video, love " THAT LOOK". Paying it forward and ordered a coffee mug & stickers for my tool box.
Thank you for posting this video. Saved me $$$ and only took an hour or so to get the mower deck fixed.
Your the best! You explain everything.... Step by step . Thank you
Freakin Halarious and helpfull at the same time.Thank you and many blessings !
Thanks so much. Seeing you can scrape down divets vs buying new part saved me money. Also made it so easy.
Taryl - thanks for the video - you bailed me out today. I followed your instructions and it worked out like a charm. The only difference was I didn't have another pulley in my bedroom ;). Thanks again for sharing your knowledge & humor. You're the BEST!!! I did what you said, fixed my mower and cut my lawn all in the same day. 👍
I did this exact repair yesterday. Thank you for the video. Goober it up!
I really look forward to seeing these videos. Learning a bunch, and still laughing as I type this here on my interscreen! Woooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Woooooooooooooooooooo!
Excellent tutorial. Just inherited one of these mowers and the blades won’t disengage. Now I have a fun DIY refurb to do. Thanks brother!
This is a classic video Taryl at his best This video helped me save a mover that I was going to junk. I learned a lot. Thank you Taryl Goober it up !
I preformed these exact steps on my lt2000 yesterday. Now it's slicker than snot!!! Thank you.
Awesome video, Taryl! Thank you so much for showing how to do this. You do an amazing job bud! Keep making these great and funny videos.
Great! Exactly the same deck as the Ryobi HDK19H42. Had to replace a spindle and when I got it off found the problem with the engagement. and tension springs. You explained everything I had going on.
Thanks! This is exactly like my K-Gro LT4218C Riding Mower (KMart Special in 1994!) Only Diff. is mine don't have cable like this one and I don't have wheels on deck. Taryl you're the best! A fine example of an American Self Made Business Man!
Followed your instructions to know what to do on my 2002 Briggs 21 HP 42 inch deck LT1000. I was having trouble trying to find the spot to stop the blades from continually running - a dangerous issue to be sure! Glad to get the "heads up" from the expert. I like your trick of folding the leading arms to make a handle! Good Work Taryl!
Taryl, you done it again. Proud of you and proud of me. Thanks.
THANKS!!!
I took my 2nd hand Poulan Pro deck completely apart 2 years ago to rebuild it but after a few months it became just a box of parts in the barn that I had no idea what to do with until your video.
You are the only one who lubricated the mechanism for the blade engagement ... Good attention to detail and information , thanks bro ...
Awesome Taryl! You not only fixed my problem but I got a touch of "Deliverance" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" also 😄. Many thanks amigo!!!
Taryl is a hell of a sweet guy, Good ol style guy. The presentation and info is awesome.
Thanks, just got this problem last week & been searching for a fix.your explanation and video did it !!
Finally a detailed video of the issue I was having with my mower not disengaging. Got er done!
Awesome video and you're hilarious bud!
Thanks! Check out some more videos and subscribe to the channel if you haven't!
I had the opposite problem (wouldn't engage) but your video saved me a lot of time and trouble. THANK YOU!
I cannot thank you enough for this video it fixed my mower and now it engages like new
Taryl, I wanted to say Thank You!! Been working on my Husqvarna 42" deck. Replaced spindles, pulleys, and blades brakes. Everything was great..till the brake part. Just wouldn't work quite right. All parts I reused except new brake pads. Took it apart twice but it just wasn't smooth as it should've been. Saw the video, took it apart and used power wire brush to clean the original parts. Then I "goobered" it up as you said and put it back together like you did. Worked perfectly!! That polishing and taking off all the 10yr old crap (roughness" was the trick. The "goobering" I actually said out loud for luck as I put it back together. Thanks buddy! Keep up the work.
Just did this and my mower works perfectly! Thank you for posting!
Thanks Taryl, you helped me fix my mower deck.
A couple of things. This guy is awesome. Second I will be saying goober it up from here on out when applying anti-seize! Thanks for the video boss!

Saved me!!! Couldn't figure out why engagement arm wasn't going back all the way!!I have rod operated but still, found the NASTY NUB and now slicker than snot!!! Thanks!!! I'm now saying goober it up,Lmao!

+Linda Smith There's Yur Dinner!
The best video I came across, see many more but did not mentioned duvets. But luckily before the deck was to get attached, I use my grinder to take duvets out. Thanks. 04/01/18
Thanks for this video. My deck was missing one piece and wouldn't you know it was the one you gave the part number for. It made all the difference and I even had time for a beer afterwards. Thanks!
42in Craftsman 917.271110 - Deck rebuild in progress. Decided to do the break job while waiting for deck parts. Don't have them in my bedroom. :-( . Stopped by the store and ordered a couple of stickers. One goes on the mower the other in the workshop. Thanks Taryl !!
I used the hint of using the metal rods as a handle. Very helpful video. Thanks.
Thank you Taryl....GOD Bless ya...
I had the exact same mower with the exact same problem, and you saved me a lot of headaches. Thank you brother! What can I say, you're "sliker'n snot".
