@@Archonsx Most cities are inevitably filled with the overwhelming hustle and bustle of everyday life commonly due to the “hustle”/“go-getter” mentality which is typically not an ideal environment for those who want to live simpler, quieter lives. Not to mention higher crime rates, higher cost of living, lower employment rates, noise pollution, light pollution, lack of nature, etc. that cities usually have. The city can definitely be stressful and exhausting for a myriad of reasons.
@@kurlykpopfan8111 I agree with most of what you said except employment rate. There are far more job opportunities and employment in the city. It’s a huge part of why people are willing to tolerate the city, an opportunity for work. Almost all over the U.S, places outside of cities are rampant with unemployment and desperation.
Hello Paola, I laughed out loud when you talked about the challenge of working in a bookshop. I had a job doing that in our tiny country town when I had my first child, 23 years ago. The owner wanted Saturdays off and I was her best customer so I got offered a job. Yes, you guessed it. I basically spent my small wages on books, and then some. One thing occurred when I worked there. A local woman walked in and browsed for a while and then said to me "Why would anyone pay $12 for a children's book?" Oh, my heart broke right there and I realised why I had trouble fitting in to the local Mum's Group. They didn't value books, reading and the need to read to their children. I wanted to share with you that since raising my toddler granddaughter, I have decided to go back to uni. Next year I start a Masters of Education in Teacher Librarianship, as my passion for literature and for literacy in children has not diminished. Your bookstore was swoon worthy. Dear Paola, I share your palpable love for books. As soon as I could read, I devoured tons of books on fairies, wizards, and fairy tales of all kinds. Last week I saw a film about the life of Beatrix Potter, whose books you love too. I myself live in Berlin, a noisy and completely overcrowded city in Germany. As soon as I watch your videos, I can leave my reality for at least a few minutes and live the life through you that I so much want ... I think your interests, passions, & personality are absolutely perfect for this job, along with being someone who, without even trying, is very difficult to maybe impossible to say no to. People are going to want to buy SOMETHING there just because of you - & ownership will notice. If there's any way they can swing it, I expect you'll be kept on after the holidays.
I'm so very jealous of being able to work in a book store! I would absolutely love to be able to do that. Even as just a part-time job for minimum wage. Sadly, such stores hardly even exist anymore. Enjoy and appreciate the opportunity.

Here, in Huntington Beach, Orange County, Southern California, there is a very small book shop that caters only to Mystery fans, and will be closing their doors in less than a year. Other than that, the only option is a Barnes & Noble (yuck!). There used to be 4 used book stores in HB alone, now there's basically nothing. So sad. Up in the greater LA area, which has a much higher population (and fewer hillbillies!), there are still some very nice stores. But overall, the physical, handheld book is going the way of the dinosaur.

Last year I opened a small secondhand bookshop. It went well but I need to prioritise my college so I abandon it. I plan to open it up again this year, and watching this video makes me sure maybe this is the best step

What an extremely lovely video. I sat here with pen in hand writing down the books you recommended. My heart began to race with anticipation. I didn’t want to miss the name, Title, or Author. At almost 66 years old, my mind and imagination take me right back to my early childhood, learning to read and spending countless hours sitting at a small table in our public library (which we lived very close to). My neighbor was librarian so my parents felt I was safe to spend hour after hour there and when I’d been gone past time to check in, they knew exactly where I’d be. 😊. I learned so many valuable lessons by my love for reading, made friends with so many trusted animals and friends, and could travel anywhere through the opportunity afforded to me through books. ❤️. My book shelves are loaded with books that I still love to read over and again. Thank you again for your delightful presence in this world. God bless you sweet friend! I've daydreamed about working in a bookshop. :) Instead, as a homemaker and homeschool mama, I'm amassing our own home library, with plans for future floor-to-ceiling bookcases. And yes, while I buy countless children's books for my little ones, I secretly know they're just as much for me. ;)
Homeschooling Mama, you are wonderful! You are creating such special emotional connections for your children to books, reading and to reading with you. This will make a real difference in their lives and you gave them that gift. My children are grown adults now but they have seen me reading some of their favourites to our toddler granddaughter and they always stop, sit and listen. I used to work in a bookstore when I was in high school. I also volunteered at the library in middle school. I loved both. I plan to do it again as I get closer to “retirement” as I loved it so.

I remember in high school French class, our teacher had us read children’s books to get us familiar with reading French in a story rather than just a series of nouns and verbs to conjugate in class. There is one I have looked for ever since. It’s called “Pearlette, Goute d’Eau”. It’s the story of a drop of water and the illustrations were beautiful. The little drop of water had adventures. She was carried in a stream, evaporated into the clouds, and returned as rain. Lovely. I took that class fifty years ago but the book is still in my memory.

I sometimes feel guilty, but your passion about whimsical books reminds me that it’s good to be “young at heart.’ Funny, you mentioned about Bunnicula. My daughter used to love reading those books. Of course, it’s not just children’s books that you read… Very interesting facts about the turtles being able to hibernate under the frigid water for 4 months.
Bunnicula!! I read those to my sons when they were little boys! They loved Bunnicula! Now those little boys are in their forties…lol. Every night I read to them before bed. I spent at least forty five minutes reading to them and singing songs to them. I used to change the names in the books to their names sometimes and they suddenly became more involved in the story…lol. I also made stories up right off the cuff that involved them. I called one of those stories Johnny and the chicken, and I made up all kinds of shenanigans for them. Reading is and always will be my favourite thing. Peace and love to you. 🙃

My ability to dream has waned over the last few years. As a pastor, writing and story-telling are two important aspects of my job and I’ve been struggling. As you were talking about reading children’s literature, I felt an excitement about reading that I’ve been missing. I read a lot as a child and my dreamland was vivid. The stories in children’s books are wonderful tools in helping people understand scriptural truths in a different way. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video and the suggestions. As a young only child I needed a way to escape and be comfortable so I turned to reading. When I was old enough I was able to use the library which was so exciting! When you find a special book it is magical. There is nothing like curling up on a comfy chair and reading. You can be transported within the pages. Walking into a bookstore is such a cozy feeling. I'm currently reading A Christmas Carol by Dickens. Generally I start it the day after Thanksgiving and it just makes Christmas time so special to me. Thank you for your video. Our oldest is a bookseller and he feels very similar to the way that you do about books.
Patti! I do the same but on 1 December as I am Australian and don't do Thanksgiving. I read it every year. I also have some Elizabeth Goudge Christmas tales that I read and also kid's books too. It is a lovely tradition.
I have always had a special fondness for childrensbooks and when I got old enough to travel (mostly study trips with school) I would bring home local to the country I was visiting childrens books (past tense because right now there's hardly any traveling for obvious reasons). I would go into a regular bookstore and ask the clerk what book every child from that particular country would know was and get that (or those). I can't tell you the warmth every clerk beams with and they have NO doubt in their body what book(s) to reach for. I've gotten to know so many wonderful stories and illustrations from so many places this was. Best. Souvenir. Ever

Growing up Books and music were my life. They saved me from reoccurring traumatic events in an alcoholic home. I just got done re-reading “Mandy” by Julie Andrews… I also just finished the “Serafina” series of well written books by a local author and found them real page turners. We each have to find what fills us, whether anyone else understands it or not. I recently married after 16 years of being alone on purpose to work through some damage done in my childhood. I found myself interesting and lovable despite what I was told repetitively growing up, Im quite amazing. So are you. Im so proud of you for doing what brings you joy and enhances your life. Bravo! You are such a lovely person and I relate to your peaceful spirit.

You are my kind of person. It is rare to find someone like me. I used to just read self help books, which I still enjoy, but I had wondered if I was missing out on the novels. My husband said I was. He is an avid reader and author or two books, volume one and two. He has several others he is working on. So your video has enlightened me and helps me. To be surrounded by books was like being surrounded by flowers. I couldn't pick just one or two. Lucky for me, I could borrow them and not buy them. We’ve been to your bookstore! We love small shops and stop in whenever we come across them. We were on a winter vacation. My son was 3 at the time and loved the children’s section. He picked out a train that was very special to him. I could’ve browsed for hours but it was close to closing. It’s a lovely shop!

I'm nearly 50...so it may be a little late in life to have this dream, but who knows right? Miracles can happen as we all know.... As a little girl, I used to read in bed with my little flashlight guiding me through the pages of Nancy Drew's, Enid Blytons' and Roald Dahls' adventures. I remember being happiest in those days and I've noticed that since I've finally started reading again my life (especially in those moments) is full of joy and enjoyment again. What pleasure it brings! It feeds my soul and nourishes my fantasy in ways I had forgotten possible. Hello Paola, while recovering from surgery I discovered your delightful, enchanting channel. With this offering I jotted down most titles for purchase. Sharing some with my two daughters. Although I am 75 I still enjoy children’s books. I raised my three children reading to them from the cradle, doing it for hours impersonating all the characters with their own voices. I was a story telling mom in grade school. Writing children’s books is the hallmark of a truly great author. One has to be really good at their craft to hold a child’s attention. The "10,000 Doors of January" is a phenomenal book, one of the best I've ever read! It's dense, so take your time with it. I had to take a few breaks from it because parts are intense (if you are sensitive). But all ends well. 😊 Love the book recommendations! Please do more.
I absolutely love this blog. I am and always have been a real bookworm and am envious of your job as a bookseller. I have worked in libraries in the past and loved it. A book I’m reading at the moment, from the library, ordered as it’s new out is called ‘Midnight in Everwood’ by M. A. Kuzniar apparently a reimagining of The Nutcracker, it too goes into another world. I don’t usually read these types of books regularly but am enjoying it. The timing of this video being uploaded is so serendipitous. I’ve been feeling very stuck and trapped by my job. I work a desk job, thankfully from home, but it’s extremely stressful and I very much dislike it. However, it does cover my basic needs very well, so I’ve been trying to be thankful for it. I just started working again ( stay-at-home /homeschool mom here) and even though I am working as a hostess again ( like I did when I was a teen 😳) for a local restaurant. I just wanted something for the weekend to get me out and to help with the ever rising bills. At first I felt silly as a 35 year old woman who went to college and is also a licensed massage therapist, going back to my first real job but I realized when I was there that it is so rewarding working for a family establishment. Most of my working experience has been with corporations and even as a hostess I feel like I have real value. I was just gonna do it until I could get my massage license for the new state I moved, but I actual feel pretty rewarded when I close up the restaurant at night. I think we think of age and labels so much and even though I hate it, I am horribly guilty and feel the need to constantly call myself out on those thoughts. We are not what we do, but how we do it. I have most of my working experience at a restaurant and even though my work experience has grown so much beyond my restaurant skills, I think all of the other jobs I have had, and they have actually helped me improve the skills I already had. Life is a strange journey. You never know where it will take you. 💜
"We are not what we do but how we do it", profound. At 63 yrs, I just love spending time as a volunteer within our small community, planting and landscaping. Sowing seeds for future generations. Blessings.

Working in a book shop cannot be someone's dream job.....but being a worker in a bookshop is such a blessing⭐. Once i was went for to get some books for our book fair...so i was waited in the book shop for my teacher to arrive and conform the books....so i just read 3- 4 books and saw lot of interesting books that i never seen before.....the time goes i went sleep beside the book shelf......tht felt like that i'm the closest friend of all these books...tht feeling is such an amazing thing that popped in my heart .the fact is that i was not mad about my teacher arrived lately😂.bcz i enjoyed being in that bookshop.And that's the day i realized that how happy i am when i was around the books💓
When we were moving and had to go through 23 years of household belongings, the thing I struggled most with, was getting rid of the books I read to my now grown children. I had an everyday collection of treasured reads and so many memories attached and a Christmas collection. Needless to say, I kept most in the hopes of reading to grandchildren some day but books become so special in our hearts and minds unlike other belongings. So enjoyed your video today, I will look up some of your suggestions for reading over the holidays.

I adore children's books, and couldn't help wondering if you've ever seen/read The Lost Words, written by Robert McFarlane and illustrated by Jackie Morris. It's one of the most beautiful books I've ever read, and if you haven't read it I think you would love it too! We have very similar taste in books! I recently learned that there is a name for this genre: magical realism. If you Google that term, you'll find lots of great suggestions. I'm currently reading Emily Martin's "Snow & Rose" and what a lovely book it is! I just adore her work. If you like "The Hidden Life of Trees," you would probably like "Braiding Sweetgrass." It was the most beautiful book I read all year. Highly recommended!! As a fellow bibliophile, I feel like I could chat about books forever! 😂 I will never tire of book content. And I enjoy these new videos where you talk to the camera. Makes it feel like a chat with a friend. ❤️

I still love children's books, it might be because I taught 1st and 2nd grade for almost 30 years. You brought me into another way of rereading I never saw before, thank you. I have tubs of books in my garage and i retired 3 years ago but i can't seem to let them go(even to my grandchildren, haha). I so much love watching your videos, you are a lovely person.
You have such a glow when talking about your favorite books. I feel the same...I wouldn't want to think of a world without books. I adore children's literature, too. I loved it as a child, but rediscovered it and gained an even greater love for it in a college children's literature class. Some of my favorites include The Celery Stalks at Midnight, A Wrinkle in Time, Harriet the Spy, and so many more. Neil Gaiman's books came to my attention a little later. I've never read one that I didn't love. It's especially fun to listen to one of his audio recordings. I also read a lot of middle grade and YA books. They are generally upbeat and so well-written. Great video! I love your little bookshop. I could lose myself in there.
I haven’t been a huge reader as an adult so after watching this video I felt sparked to get into reading again. I read the Snow Child, thanks for recommending. So, so beautiful. I cried so much at the end. Even throughout the day tears kept coming. Your mention of connecting to another world is just right. She was the personification of the wild, of the mountains. Of the place in me that is still wild, untainted, of pure spirit. When she left, it just hit home at that core wound. The fall from grace, I suppose. I absolutely LOVE children's books but I don't usually bring them up when recommending books to friends not sure how others will recieve them. I like that you made a point that they spark hope and I think that's why I'm drawn to them. If you have not read 'The Land of Elyon' series yet i highly recommend!

I read on kindle only but I purchased a used hardback so that I can pass it around to my non-kindle friends since many people are not able to go to the library now.

I grew up with a love for books. My family encouraged reading. The weekly newspaper was a staple in our home. By age 7 I could read most of it. I read the Bible, and Children’s books to my unborn children. Both love to read and have passed the Love to theirs children and grandchildren. It warms my heart. I love your videos. Keep them coming.

@@Archonsx Most cities are inevitably filled with the overwhelming hustle and bustle of everyday life commonly due to the “hustle”/“go-getter” mentality which is typically not an ideal environment for those who want to live simpler, quieter lives. Not to mention higher crime rates, higher cost of living, lower employment rates, noise pollution, light pollution, lack of nature, etc. that cities usually have. The city can definitely be stressful and exhausting for a myriad of reasons.
@@kurlykpopfan8111 I agree with most of what you said except employment rate. There are far more job opportunities and employment in the city. It’s a huge part of why people are willing to tolerate the city, an opportunity for work. Almost all over the U.S, places outside of cities are rampant with unemployment and desperation.
Hello Paola, I laughed out loud when you talked about the challenge of working in a bookshop. I had a job doing that in our tiny country town when I had my first child, 23 years ago. The owner wanted Saturdays off and I was her best customer so I got offered a job. Yes, you guessed it. I basically spent my small wages on books, and then some. One thing occurred when I worked there. A local woman walked in and browsed for a while and then said to me "Why would anyone pay $12 for a children's book?" Oh, my heart broke right there and I realised why I had trouble fitting in to the local Mum's Group. They didn't value books, reading and the need to read to their children. I wanted to share with you that since raising my toddler granddaughter, I have decided to go back to uni. Next year I start a Masters of Education in Teacher Librarianship, as my passion for literature and for literacy in children has not diminished. Your bookstore was swoon worthy. Dear Paola, I share your palpable love for books. As soon as I could read, I devoured tons of books on fairies, wizards, and fairy tales of all kinds. Last week I saw a film about the life of Beatrix Potter, whose books you love too. I myself live in Berlin, a noisy and completely overcrowded city in Germany. I'm so very jealous of being able to work in a book store! I would absolutely love to be able to do that. Even as just a part-time job for minimum wage. Sadly, such stores hardly even exist anymore. Enjoy and appreciate the opportunity.

Here, in Huntington Beach, Orange County, Southern California, there is a very small book shop that caters only to Mystery fans, and will be closing their doors in less than a year. Other than that, the only option is a Barnes & Noble (yuck!). There used to be 4 used book stores in HB alone, now there's basically nothing. So sad. Up in the greater LA area, which has a much higher population (and fewer hillbillies!), there are still some very nice stores. But overall, the physical, handheld book is going the way of the dinosaur.

Last year I opened a small secondhand bookshop. It went well but I need to prioritise my college so I abandon it. I plan to open it up again this year, and watching this video makes me sure maybe this is the best step

What an extremely lovely video. I sat here with pen in hand writing down the books you recommended. My heart began to race with anticipation. I didn’t want to miss the name, Title, or Author. At almost 66 years old, my mind and imagination take me right back to my early childhood, learning to read and spending countless hours sitting at a small table in our public library (which we lived very close to). My neighbor was librarian so my parents felt I was safe to spend hour after hour there and when I’d been gone past time to check in, they knew exactly where I’d be. 😊. I learned so many valuable lessons by my love for reading, made friends with so many trusted animals and friends, and could travel anywhere through the opportunity afforded to me through books. ❤️. My book shelves are loaded with books that I still love to read over and again. Thank you again for your delightful presence in this world. God bless you sweet friend! This was such a sweet memory you shared! I also spent loads of time at the library growing up. I credit my time spent reading nonfiction books about various subjects as my true education (compared to my lackluster experience with school). Books can show you the world and teach you to empathize 📖

I've daydreamed about working in a bookshop. :) Instead, as a homemaker and homeschool mama, I'm amassing our own home library, with plans for future floor-to-ceiling bookcases. And yes, while I buy countless children's books for my little ones, I secretly know they're just as much for me. ;)

I remember in high school French class, our teacher had us read children’s books to get us familiar with reading French in a story rather than just a series of nouns and verbs to conjugate in class. There is one I have looked for ever since. It’s called “Pearlette, Goute d’Eau”. It’s the story of a drop of water and the illustrations were beautiful. The little drop of water had adventures. She was carried in a stream, evaporated into the clouds, and returned as rain. Lovely. I took that class fifty years ago but the book is still in my memory.

I sometimes feel guilty, but your passion about whimsical books reminds me that it’s good to be “young at heart.’ Funny, you mentioned about Bunnicula. My daughter used to love reading those books. Of course, it’s not just children’s books that you read… Very interesting facts about the turtles being able to hibernate under the frigid water for 4 months.
Bunnicula!! I read those to my sons when they were little boys! They loved Bunnicula! Now those little boys are in their forties…lol. Every night I read to them before bed. I spent at least forty five minutes reading to them and singing songs to them. I used to change the names in the books to their names sometimes and they suddenly became more involved in the story…lol. I also made stories up right off the cuff that involved them. I called one of those stories Johnny and the chicken, and I made up all kinds of shenanigans for them. Reading is and always will be my favourite thing. Peace and love to you. 🙃

My ability to dream has waned over the last few years. As a pastor, writing and story-telling are two important aspects of my job and I’ve been struggling. As you were talking about reading children’s literature, I felt an excitement about reading that I’ve been missing. I read a lot as a child and my dreamland was vivid. The stories in children’s books are wonderful tools in helping people understand scriptural truths in a different way. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video and the suggestions. As a young only child I needed a way to escape and be comfortable so I turned to reading. When I was old enough I was able to use the library which was so exciting!

When you find a special book it is magical. There is nothing like curling up on a comfy chair and reading. You can be transported within the pages. Walking into a bookstore is such a cozy feeling. Patti! I do the same but on 1 December as I am Australian and don't do Thanksgiving. I read it every year. I also have some Elizabeth Goudge Christmas tales that I read and also kid's books too. It is a lovely tradition.
I have always had a special fondness for childrensbooks and when I got old enough to travel (mostly study trips with school) I would bring home local to the country I was visiting childrens books (past tense because right now there's hardly any traveling for obvious reasons). I would go into a regular bookstore and ask the clerk what book every child from that particular country would know was and get that (or those). I can't tell you the warmth every clerk beams with and they have NO doubt in their body what book(s) to reach for. I've gotten to know so many wonderful stories and illustrations from so many places this was. Best. Souvenir. Ever

I read Bunnicula as an elementary school kid (or maybe it was one that my teacher read aloud to us?), and I LOVED it. It has stuck with me all these years because of what a clever story it is.

Growing up Books and music were my life. They saved me from reoccurring traumatic events in an alcoholic home. I just got done re-reading “Mandy” by Julie Andrews… I also just finished the “Serafina” series of well written books by a local author and found them real page turners. We each have to find what fills us, whether anyone else understands it or not. I recently married after 16 years of being alone on purpose to work through some damage done in my childhood. I found myself interesting and lovable despite what I was told repetitively growing up, Im quite amazing. So are you. Im so proud of you for doing what brings you joy and enhances your life. Bravo! You are such a lovely person and I relate to your peaceful spirit.

You are my kind of person. It is rare to find someone like me. I used to just read self help books, which I still enjoy, but I had wondered if I was missing out on the novels. My husband said I was. He is an avid reader and author or two books, volume one and two. He has several others he is working on. So your video has enlightened me and helps me. Your bookstore is charming! I would love to spend some time there among the books. When I was in college, I had a work study job in the college library and I loved it! To be surrounded by books was like being surrounded by flowers. I couldn't pick just one or two. Lucky for me, I could borrow them and not buy them.

We’ve been to your bookstore! We love small shops and stop in whenever we come across them. We were on a winter vacation. My son was 3 at the time and loved the children’s section. He picked out a train that was very special to him. I could’ve browsed for hours but it was close to closing. It’s a lovely shop!

I'm so inspired and would love to one day own a little bookshop where people can come and nose around or drink a warm cup of tea or coffee, whilst soaking up all the wonderful stories written in the books! I'm nearly 50...so it may be a little late in life to have this dream, but who knows right? Miracles can happen as we all know.... As a little girl, I used to read in bed with my little flashlight guiding me through the pages of Nancy Drew's, Enid Blytons' and Roald Dahls' adventures. I remember being happiest in those days and I've noticed that since I've finally started reading again my life (especially in those moments) is full of joy and enjoyment again. What pleasure it brings! It feeds my soul and nourishes my fantasy in ways I had forgotten possible. I have been a quiet follower of your vlogs since the start and I admire your courage, vulnerability and the wisdom you share being so young still. PS I love Neil Gaiman’s books. I tend to revisit them. 🤍 Also I was just talking to a friend about how books would be so much more magical if they had some illustrations in them. As adults we enjoy art as well so I wish more would include them. But for now I appreciate children’s books as well as graphic novels sprinkled in to my reading lists :)

today has been a really anxious day for me. I find out about college acceptance and it feels like the culmination of much of the past 6 year's stress. as I sit here waiting for my sister to return so that I can open the letter, I watched this video. I love that you spoke about reading children's books as adults. I have started reading more again over the last year or so and I have been reading through the "Little House" books. I looooved the books when I was younger and I"m so enjoying re-visiting them. I'm also wanting to read the Anne of Green Gables books.
Oh. @Healing Waters, those Little House books and Anne books are still on my shelf from my childhood. I actually read Jane of Lantern Hill this week - I loved it all over again. There is something magic in them that calls to us, no matter what our age. Enjoy!

Hello Paola, while recovering from surgery I discovered your delightful, enchanting channel. With this offering I jotted down most titles for purchase. Sharing some with my two daughters. Although I am 75 I still enjoy children’s books. I raised my three children reading to them from the cradle, doing it for hours impersonating all the characters with their own voices. I was a story telling mom in grade school. Writing children’s books is the hallmark of a truly great author. One has to be really good at their craft to hold a child’s attention. The "10,000 Doors of January" is a phenomenal book, one of the best I've ever read! It's dense, so take your time with it. I had to take a few breaks from it because parts are intense (if you are sensitive). But all ends well. 😊

I absolutely love this blog. I am and always have been a real bookworm and am envious of your job as a bookseller. I have worked in libraries in the past and loved it. A book I’m reading at the moment, from the library, ordered as it’s new out is called ‘Midnight in Everwood’ by M. A. Kuzniar apparently a reimagining of The Nutcracker, it too goes into another world. I don’t usually read these types of books regularly but am enjoying it. The descriptions of sweets etc. is mouthwatering. Thank you again for this blog, my reading list is endless and I can’t go into a bookshop or library without coming out with armfuls of books. xx

Hearing of adults reticent to read books written for young minds, brings to mind 'The Little Prince' by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. I believe every adult will benefit from internalizing the deep truths in such a seemingly simple story.

The timing of this video being uploaded is so serendipitous. I’ve been feeling very stuck and trapped by my job. I work a desk job, thankfully from home, but it’s extremely stressful and I very much dislike it. However, it does cover my basic needs very well, so I’ve been trying to be thankful for it. Hearing you say that we aren’t defined by our jobs really helped. You also made me very nostalgic for when I was a bookseller. It can be such a magical job. Loved hearing about your lovely book store...I grew up loving the smell of books in libraries and shops! I taught elementary school for nearly 40 years and still have former students tell me about a favorite book I read to them. ...so many wonderful authors with such voice. I was listening and checking out those you listed that I've never heard of...now my Amazon cart has more in it!

I am a second grade teacher turned college instructor, turned homeschooling Mom and have be exposed to much more children’s literature than I would have been otherwise as a result of my work. You may already be familiar with these, but you might enjoy The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo and also The Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Peterson at a songwriters conference and was very pleased to read his books afterwards. They are humorous, touching, deeper than one would give credit for at first glance, and overall enjoyable to read.

I just started working again ( stay-at-home /homeschool mom here) and even though I am working as a hostess again ( like I did when I was a teen 😳) for a local restaurant. I just wanted something for the weekend to get me out and to help with the ever rising bills. At first I felt silly as a 35 year old woman who went to college and is also a licensed massage therapist, going back to my first real job but I realized when I was there that it is so rewarding working for a family establishment. Most of my working experience has been with corporations and even as a hostess I feel like I have real value. I was just gonna do it until I could get my massage license for the new state I moved, but I actual feel pretty rewarded when I close up the restaurant at night. I think we think of age and labels so much and even though I hate it, I am horribly guilty and feel the need to constantly call myself out on those thoughts. We are not what we do, but how we do it. I have most of my working experience at a restaurant and even though my work experience has grown so much beyond my restaurant skills, I think all of the other jobs I have had, and they have actually helped me improve the skills I already had. Life is a strange journey. You never know where it will take you. 💜

Working in a book shop cannot be someone's dream job.....but being a worker in a bookshop is such a blessing⭐. Once i was went for to get some books for our book fair...so i was waited in the book shop for my teacher to arrive and conform the books....so i just read 3- 4 books and saw lot of interesting books that i never seen before.....the time goes i went sleep beside the book shelf......tht felt like that i'm the closest friend of all these books...tht feeling is such an amazing thing that popped in my heart .the fact is that i was not mad about my teacher arrived lately😂.bcz i enjoyed being in that bookshop.And that's the day i realized that how happy i am when i was around the books💓

When we were moving and had to go through 23 years of household belongings, the thing I struggled most with, was getting rid of the books I read to my now grown children. I had an everyday collection of treasured reads and so many memories attached and a Christmas collection. Needless to say, I kept most in the hopes of reading to grandchildren some day but books become so special in our hearts and minds unlike other belongings. So enjoyed your video today, I will look up some of your suggestions for reading over the holidays.

I have learned so many insightful things from children's books and I just love their simplified stories!!! I adore children's books, and couldn't help wondering if you've ever seen/read The Lost Words, written by Robert McFarlane and illustrated by Jackie Morris. It's one of the most beautiful books I've ever read, and if you haven't read it I think you would love it too! We have very similar taste in books! I recently learned that there is a name for this genre: magical realism. If you Google that term, you'll find lots of great suggestions.
I'm currently reading Emily Martin's "Snow & Rose" and what a lovely book it is! I just adore her work.
If you like "The Hidden Life of Trees," you would probably like "Braiding Sweetgrass." It was the most beautiful book I read all year. Highly recommended!!

I still love children's books, it might be because I taught 1st and 2nd grade for almost 30 years. You brought me into another way of rereading I never saw before, thank you. I have tubs of books in my garage and i retired 3 years ago but i can't seem to let them go(even to my grandchildren, haha). I so much love watching your videos, you are a lovely person.
You have such a glow when talking about your favorite books. I feel the same...I wouldn't want to think of a world without books. I adore children's literature, too. I loved it as a child, but rediscovered it and gained an even greater love for it in a college children's literature class. Some of my favorites include The Celery Stalks at Midnight, A Wrinkle in Time, Harriet the Spy, and so many more. Neil Gaiman's books came to my attention a little later. I've never read one that I didn't love. It's especially fun to listen to one of his audio recordings. I also read a lot of middle grade and YA books. They are generally upbeat and so well-written. Great video! I love your little bookshop. I could lose myself in there.
I haven’t been a huge reader as an adult so after watching this video I felt sparked to get into reading again. I read the Snow Child, thanks for recommending. So, so beautiful. I cried so much at the end. Even throughout the day tears kept coming.
Your mention of connecting to another world is just right. She was the personification of the wild, of the mountains. Of the place in me that is still wild, untainted, of pure spirit. When she left, it just hit home at that core wound. The fall from grace, I suppose. The part of me that has lost touch with my inner snow child.

I absolutely LOVE children's books but I don't usually bring them up when recommending books to friends not sure how others will recieve them. I like that you made a point that they spark hope and I think that's why I'm drawn to them. If you have not read 'The Land of Elyon' series yet i highly recommend!

Even though I hope I don't ever have to work in retail and customer service again, there is still something alluring to the thought of working in a cozy bookshop. I grew up with a love for books. My family encouraged reading. The weekly newspaper was a staple in our home. By age 7 I could read most of it. I read the Bible, and Children’s books to my unborn children. Both love to read and have passed the Love to theirs children and grandchildren. It warms my heart. I love your videos. Keep them coming.
