  • A powerful, long-lived thunderstorm complex producing widespread damaging wind gusts, called a derecho, swept from Iowa into northern Illinois on Monday, August 10th, 2020. The strongest winds blasted central and eastern portions of Iowa with 100-120 mph wind gusts. 80 to 100 mph winds and isolated brief tornadoes were common across northern Illinois.

It sucks for all those who had no comprehensive insurance on their vehicles and cannot afford a new means of transportation. Even cars that were for sale got smashed in the streets. Now people will have to buy from sleezy used car salesmen who blue book price a car that's actually in poor or fair condition(because the rust) and try to sell it off as being in "good". Oh and engine code resetting and wanting $1.5k for a car that might last 2 days before the engine blows up. Uhg. Lot's of people are hurting, they lost their food, they haven't showered for days, they've been without work...as if Covid-19 wasn't bad enough, this derecho was the last thing we neeeded.

Sorry, should have clarified. I live in So Cal. We have winds called Santa Ana, also known as the devil’s wind. They are strong winds that can last a couple of days if not more. They bring very low humidity and generally scare the crap out of fire fighters because if a brush fire starts, it can get really bad very quickly destroying homes, endangering farm animals and some people have gotten caught in the fire. The winds blow big rigs over and knock down trees. And sometimes they’re just a fat nuisance knocking dead branches (and some live ones) out of trees. They gain strength at twilight scaring dogs every where because of trash cans and anything not nailed down getting blown around the yard. Yes, I’m well aware of what the wind can do. I still find it exciting. Scares me too but I’m more fascinated with the power of nature than I’m scared of it. Ergo, yes, I would have enjoyed watching it. Not happy at all about the damage, but still excited about the power of wind.

We were hit here in Maryland by a derecho in June 2012. I'm in central Maryland. We had so much tree damage and losses ....... so many large/huge trees just laid right over because the derecho came thru after a very, very wet spring (like rain every week, heavy rain for days at a time if not a week at a time here and there)..... the trees just couldn't hold on ....... and some communities further out of town (rural and semi rural) were 3 - 4 weeks or more with no power...... it was awful

Like I said, so many, many trees down, power lines taken down by the trees, etc. I am in town, but it was something like I had never seen before, nor have I seen since. When the worst of it was blowing and raining, I had water coming in under my front door ...... the wind and rain were coming straight at the front of the house, it was strange that there wasn't water coming in around the windows, just under the front door. I didn't sleep until the rain stopped. I hope that was the closest I will ever come to experiencing anything close to a full blown hurricane.

This happens every couple of years, when you have northwesterly flow aloft, and very high surface dewpoints in the threatened area. The storms develop then "eat" into the humid air, and propagate and blast SE'ward. What makes these so strong is the strong jetstream. Unusual in a VERY high moisture environment. Also...as an operational weather forecaster for 35 years, and having taught severe weather analysis and forecasting for the Department of Defense for 8 years (Subject Matter Expert, or SME), an EXCELLENT rule of thumb for convective wind gust forecasting is 1.5 times the forward speed of movement. The video started with the comment of 75 mph movement..so this is about 112 mph convective gust potential.

    • @dennissvitak148
      @dennissvitak148 4 роки тому +8

A good "comp" for this type of system is the west-Texas and Oklahoma "dry line." Also called a Marfa Front, as it frequently originates in the vicinity of Marfa, Texas. This is a moisture discontinuity..where bone dry air with westerly winds aloft push into very, VERY high dewpoints. The more moisture the atmosphere has, the more latent heat it releases when condensation occurs, which keeps the storms bouyant (and developing). Conversely, very dry air is very dense air, and is quite effecting in punching underneath warm, moist, humid air, and forcing it aloft. In a derecho event, rapidly moving storms with strong upward vertical motion MUST have compensatory motion...or strong DVM (downward vertical motion) in the rain cooled air behind the line. This DVM creates/strengthens a meso-high pressure cell, further increasing the density contrast across the system..cold/dense on one side, hot, humid, and unstable on the other. You get a little mini-cold front moving along at 75 miles per hour. I have seen a derecho go from Iowa to Savannah, Georgia...as long as the air on the warm side of the line remains unstable, there is no stopping the storms from propagating southeastward.

What nobody is mentioning in the comments is weather warfare, We have fires in the northwest in five different states, now we have fires in Colorado. This storm was not natural, this was manufactured. Next they will go after the bread basket, the plane states. After that they will go after the Appalachian mountains with fire, it's already in the books. People need to learn about weather warfare and geoengineering, that was the cause of this behemoth monster.

I've seen some nasty weather hit Chicagoland in my 46 years but Wow. The sky turned pea green where I live and then the sirens went off. You do an excellent job at getting all sorts of footage. I really appreciate all that you share with us. I still can't believe that IL had 11 tornadoes and one that went through Rogers Park and out into the lake.

Spotters are dbags who are in it for the adrenaline and drive around benefiting off people's misfortunes. Taking videos of storms destroying people's lives and then driving around taking pictures and videos of them as they realize the damage. Get a life. I always pray your vehicles get damaged cuz u purposely drive be into these things, while the people who live there get their stuff destroyed by just being unlucky and in the way of the storm, then u leave free of damage after benefitting off these people misfortunes. While they are stuck dealing with an event they wanted no part of. You're a bunch of sick losers. Get a real job.

W o W . Incredible footage. I have driven through a Tornado one summer years ago on the Sawmill Pkwy in Columbia County, NY on my way to NYC. It was a frightening experience mainly because that road has NO SHOULDERS in which to pull over. Visibility was only the to the middle of my car hood. If I, or anyone, would have panicked & stopped, you would have gotten plowed into from behind or slammed into a stopped car, so you had to keep going praying the road ahead was clear. Dips & hills in the road created valleys flooded with water and often my car would totally submerge almost up to my door window. (I was driving a Mitsubishi Gallant, very low to the ground). My windshield wipers were ineffective against the rain, wind & the thrashing of tree limbs that whipped across my windshield. Luckily I knew the road well & where there was a Scenic Overlook, only opportunity to pull over & a few miles ahead. It was also hard to decide the best speed - too slow & I might get stuck in the flooded areas, too fast an impact with a slower or stopped car ahead would be severe. When I arrived there were many cars who had done the same but the car next to me had a hysterical, screaming woman. Thank heavens she wasn't the Driver! There was not much to do overall except hit your Flashers, stay alert & be ready for any event that might occur. Stay alert & remain Calm was my only option. It was a harrowing experience but rare, unlike people who go through similar, if not worse, on a more frequent basis in some areas of the Country. It helps to actually SEE what these Storms are like - I thank this Storm Chaser for risking it so we can !

I would have parked forward of that junk pile visible at the corner of the building. It sure made me nervous. Loose objects in high winds and all, it seemed like an unnecessary risk to take in an already risky situation. Situational awareness is key to survival when all hell breaks loose.
    Sympathies, Iowa.
Personally experienced a two week + mid summer power outage in Dearborn Heights, MI, without a generator to be had, after one of these fronts came through the metro area in the early '80's. Had to re-roof and re-gutter the house and garage. The garage got parallelogrammed and was never the same. An older, blue collar neighborhood with mature trees, in a moment's time turned into a shadeless cue ball. We lost all our trees. We were lucky to have city water and sewer, so the plumbing worked, natural gas for cooking was a boon, lighting the stove with matches, threw out all the perishables and ate out a whole lot. We continued going into Detroit to work every day, as if nothing had happened. It was candles and darkness, going to bed early, cold showers.
Living in the country now, we would never be without a generator to run the well, boiler and keep the freezers going. Lessons learned.

@@Whispering.Graves It may have been a three week power outage. It was epic. I was working down in the city, 16 miles from home. The wind drove the water along the ground and up the side of our three story, brick, industrial building and forced the water in around all the windows, doors and loading bays. We were located at the intersection of I-75 and East Grand Blvd. The freeway access roads and the Blvd flooded out in front of the shop. We stood in the second floor shop kitchen and watched car after car get drowned, people in suits and dresses sitting on the open window sills of their cars, trying to figure out how to get on their roofs. It hit right around lunch hour. The sky was the darkest green. When the front hit, I recall a guy from the shop dragged me away from the windows, which in afterthought, I appreciated very much.
Meanwhile, my wife was right downtown, working on the 19th floor of the McNamara Bldg, on Michigan Ave. She said the building moved, as if in an earthquake. Everyone on her floor ran to the lee side of the building, away from the windward windows.
We both finished our day's work before heading our separate ways home to find it and the entire neighborhood in shambles, unrecognizable. It took a long time to get there through all the detours, flooding and debris on the roads. We had to use surface roads through some rougher parts of the city, as I-94 always floods. Our neighbor across the street had a tree sticking through his roof, into a bedroom and one through the living room window. Our street was still flooded up over the curb and front lawns. It took a while to figure the best way to get to the house without drowning the cars. Dearborn Heights, right at the corner of the Southfield Fwy and I-94, was notorious for flooding in the 1980's. The good old days.

We had one spotter who was about a mile south of the Maple Park tornado (EF0 spin up) and he couldn't see it with all the rain. Kane Co ARES relayed a lot of damage reports to LOT that were snapped trees, some pretty large (18", 20" diameter). One report of a traffic signal spun on a post the wrong direction. I remember the radar views and damage done by the 2012 and 2014 derechos up here. Learned to respect these storms. Again, many thanks!! (wx9vor)

I was watching on radar before ducking into my basement and noticed pockets where rotation was occuring, there were probably lots of EF1 tornadoes hidden within the mostly straightline winds. We lost an oak tree which was pobably older than our town and it smashed 2 cars and a truck next door. The gas station next door had it's sheet metal roof ripped off by the wind. Massive foliage damage in my area....it'll take years before we have shade again. The birds & squirrels are now fighting over the trees that remain.

How would you spot ef-1 tornado damage in a storm that had stronger winds than an ef-1 tornado! LOL

Afterwards it should be easy enough to tell tornado damage from straight line winds.

The storm was weakened compared to what we experienced in Marshalltown/central Iowa! It turned green like I've never seen before! It almost was so green that it looked fake! Just had a Tornado in 2018 in Marshalltown, and they were still doing repairs. This wasn't as intense as the tornado but it covered a bigger area, to say the least! I assume that because of its size, it left more damage than the twister did. Mostly trees and trampolines, sheds, and I did see a couple garages that went down! I had my garage door locked and it tried to suck the whole door & frame right out of there rough opening. I did twist my whole garage though. But the tornado destroyed and damaged a lot of structures along it's path.
