    We are not worthy. What a gift for mere mortals! You sir are incredibly talented. I have been watching your videos and must say, you have a way of teaching that allows me to put the 'why ' with the 'how to'. You have given me inspiration and the ability to improvise on demand.

    If I ever run into you in person some place, yer gonna have to let me buy you a beer, or a coffee, or lunch, or whatever you prefer. I've been playing longer than I care to admit, and I should be a lot better than I am, but thanks to you and the great insight you provide, I've been able to open up a big industrial size bottle of "catch-up", and I've been cutting back on the noodles because lately I've been focusing on my phrasing and making articulate statements that say something. You've provided some extremely useful tips that have been of enormous help in getting my voice together so I can play things people might actually want to listen to. I cannot thank you enough for this.
    Another aspect of all this is what I've learned about navigating the Dorian universe is that I've gained the confidence and insight to tackle the improv on one of my all time favorite jams, the live Fillmore version of "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed". That jam rips holes in the wall between the dimensions. I've loved it since I was 11 yrs old and I've been messing around with it for a long, long time, but now Im starting to get the feel for it. Your videos have given me a lot of missing pieces and some of the glue I needed to get it together.
    I love Jerry and Bob as much as you, but Duane and Dickey were another dynamic duo worthy of honorable mention.
    I can go on for days about all this, but all I really need to say is........
    THANKS!
    CHEERS!
    HATS OFF!
    Love and respect!

    Ian's Patreon lessons this week are something very special. He prepares a series of simple progressions and lets' you figure out the chords in those progressions. Every week Ian's Patreon channel fills my week with fun ideas and exercises. But this one may be the best ever. He has started discussions on the channel that let you interact with Ian and other players on the channel. Very cool. So cool.

    I have long outgrown you as a teacher and I would like to thank you. you were one of the important steps I took to see the fretboard clearly. you have a lot to offer as a teacher but your stitch method is by far the most useful tool you teach. Even though I can see the fretboard well, I still use that method when improvising and trying to go "outside of the box", as they say. once again, thank you.

    As usual, simple is good. Thanks for using the scale degrees to describe what your thought process is. Using fret and string numbers (TAB) isn't useful for understanding what is going on. Really knowing what parts of the scale you are using is an excellent way to know why you are playing what you're playing and freeing up your imagination. I'm sure there are very good musicians that got there just by knowing the positions of all the frets/strings that count but there is something very satisfying about knowing what parts of the scale are important.

    Ian!! Do bends work for you on acoustic? All I have is the acoustic right now, and am having trouble hearing the bends or it never bends up all the way (sonically).
    tried out a Les Paul this weekend and was enamored with how easy the bend was.

    • @EclecticEssentric
      @EclecticEssentric 3 роки тому

      You can bend on acoustic but not as easily. Often the strings are fatter and possibly shorter.
      Benders tend to play electric with 8s or 9s on the high end.

    Hi Ian, another great video. This is just the type of info that I need at this point in my guitar journey. I am just really getting into soloing and one of the biggest issue I am having, I am sure a lot of new guitarist had or having the same issues of starting their solo off with the 6th string root note. I have found that I really don't like this sound at all, it sounds muddy and horrible to me. Do you have a video posted where you are starting the solo with the 6th string root and it sounds good? Is there even a reasons to do this? I am new and learning and trying to find my sound and style. Also I really enjoyed your becoming the CEO of your Major Pentatonic video, do you have one for the minor pentatonic that covers the same information?

    OK. So its taken this lesson on how to start a solo to make me realise I play in Dorian and mixoldyian ....After watching so many lessons on modes that I really can't get my head around it took this lesson and something just clicked in my head. What the hell!!
    I actually know 4 of the modes!

    • @EclecticEssentric
      @EclecticEssentric 3 роки тому

      The easy way to grok mode shapes is put them all in one key (for the 7 diatonic modes at least).
      Take C key for example (no sharps/flats to write). CDEFGAB
      Ionian CDEFGAB Major
      Dorian DEFGABC Minor
      Phrygian EFGABCD Minor
      Lydian FGABCDE Major
      Mixolydian GABCDEF Major
      Aeolian ABCDEFG Minor
      Locrian BCDEFGA Minor b5. Learn the shape each creates.
      Once you learn the shape in C key, they are movable to any key.
      Each mode is 1 half step away from the next if you play them from the same tonic starting note and in this order 4152637.
      So Lydian is the sharpest mode. Flat that aug 4th to a normal 4th and you have Ionian mode, flat that maj 7 of Ionian to a min 7 to get Mixolydian, flat the maj 3 to min 3 and Mixo becomes Dorian, Dorian is the only (diatonic) minor scale with a major 6th, so flat that 6th to get Aeolian mode (relative minor of the key), now flat the 2nd of Aeolian to make Phrygian mode, and then flat the 5th of Phrygy to make Locrian mode. Then, if you flat the 1 (tonic) you get back to Lydian mode a half step below where you started (in the next lowest key).
      Besides in key (diatonic), you can use modes to modulate between keys, like key blending (say chords F C Em + D, playing between C key and G key, or F key and G key).
      And you can use them to flavor existing chords. Example: A minor is ACE, so if you strum ACE, I could play A Aeolian (ABCDEFG) from C key, A Phrygian (ABbCDEFG) from F key, or A Dorian (ABCDEF# G) from G key over your A minor because none of the notes that change, Bb or F# , effect the chord but make different sounds or flavors, brighter/happier, or darker/sadder.
      Lastly, there are specific situations where the mode is called for: Dorian over m2(7th) + M5(7th). Phrygian m3 to M4, Lydian M4 to M5, Mixolydian M5 to M4. Honorable mention to Harmonic minor (exotic scale) being played in a minor 145 where the 5 is a Major instead...the sharp 7 of the tonic chord (m1) is the Major 3rd of the 5th chord (M5), hence why to use this mode, but you could simply play harmonic minor (ABCDEFG# ) over that same ACE A minor chord for flavor.
      I hope this helps.

    Thank you so much Mr. Stich. I have more of a problem than a question. I've been learning guitar for many many years, practicing religiously every day for at least 38 minutes. I've never jammed or played in a band. I'm confident that I have a solid knowledge of music theory as it applies to guitars. I can play rythm an arpeggios.
    But, God help me, I cannot play solo! I cannot seem to connect with changing chord progressions! What may be my problems? I do know pentatonic scales (major & manor) all five positions! I love your methods, and I've been following you for years.
    Can you, please help me understand what my problem is? Please, feel free to use me as a Guinea pig in your lessons. Sorry for this long mumbling.

    Hi Ian, Al here, can you explain how you find say, a 9th, or a 13th chord. Thanks Al.

    • @EclecticEssentric
      @EclecticEssentric 3 роки тому

      There are some guidelines you can agree with or ignore for chord construction, like "it's not a 9th unless over a flat 7. Otherwise it's just an 'add 9' chord".
      But basically, it's like this for determining the intervals: these will change slightly by mode/scale.
      Write out a scale in 2 lines, first letter on top, second letter below. This will show all the degrees in 1 line (except the 6th, 4th, 2nd but you'll get those).
      Using C key: CDEFGAB, I'll write the 2 lines...
      CEGBDFACEGBDFAC
      DFACEGBDFACEGBD
      Now the first chord will be CEG (C major), the 6th, A, is below but the other intervals are spelled out C1E3G5B7D9F11A13 for that chord. D is 2 or 9, F is 4 or 11, A is 6 or 13, not too hard to figure.
      Second chord is Dm: DFA...DFAC, DFACE, DFACEG, Et cetera.
      Third chord Em...EGB, EGBD, EGBDF, et cetera.
      Note that in different modes/exotic scales a few notes/chords will change. Harmonize each and spell each out in 2 lines as above to see the intervals.
      I hope that makes it easy for you.
