@@JoshuaBardwell Awesome. Thanks so much. You’re a big help and the reason I can maintain my sanity in this sometimes confusing hobby. I’m joining your patreon now.
I had a surprisingly smooth experience with elrs spi binding on a mobula6. It wasn't binding probably because the elrs came from factory with erls firmware 2.x I flashed betaflight 4.4.2, went to the receiver tab, selected SPI and entered my passphrase.... thats it, no wifi needed, no compiling, no need to do anything on the Transmitter.
Very good-gets you most of the way. Mainly there's lots of other misinformation on the web of which this steers you clear. There were still problems for me identifying device category/device names, as you don't get this information when you buy your drone; even the update page with DYI... category wasn't of much use. I wasted a lot of time because I didn't know my just purchased drone was ELRS v2, not the v3 on my RM Boxer-I just assumed the latest ELRS would be installed on a new drone.
Awesome video. You are awesome! However, as a software developer for 30 years, I find this to be the worst design for software firmware updates I’ve ever seen. And you have some how found a way to make this work for us. Thank you!!
My procedure is to connect to the receiver with WiFi and set it to connect to my home network. Then I build and flash from the configurator. This has worked for every receiver brand except the Axis Flying receivers I have. With those, WiFi did not work correctly until I had upgraded once. After that I am able to use the same method with home network set for future updates.
Hey Mr Bardwell. I wish you'd released this video a day earlier as it would have helped me out 2 days ago (and saved me a whole load of head-scratching!). I was trying to flash my new Ranger Micro TX and bind it with a Naminmo RX from an old build. Flashed both to the latest ELRS f/w with my passphrase ... but no successful bind?!? My last resort was to set my passphrase for both RX/TX using the runtime options .... and bingo, it worked. Seemed counter-intuitive but, as you demonstrated, it works. Thx for confirming that my approach wasn't pure luck :)
U saved me! Lol I finally figured out why I wasn't seeing elrs in betaflight lol now I need to figure out the rest of this mumbo jumbo lol thanks joshue!

I can not figure out how to install my rp3 reciever in my drone. Ive soldered everything correctly and I made sure there were no shorts. I turn it on and the reciever just flashes for a split second and then nothing happens. Do I have to give it power before I solder the TX and RX wires or what am I doing wrong?
so If I do not want to flash the firmware, but just want the advantages of having a binding phrase, can I just enter the binding phrase in the 10.0.0.1 web page and save it to the drone and radio that way? [your video at 7:40].
Thank you Joshua you have saved me from spending days on getting my gear running, but I have an issue with a Zorro ELRS TX, it is bound to the RX as it says on the radio when I remove the battery from the RX and when I reconnect the battery it says connected again, on BF I can see that the Roll, Pitch, Yaw and Throttle work but not the switches. I have tried everything but nothing else works. dont know what else todo.. or what direction you can point me. Thank you !!!
I am so new to ELRS, I'm still itching from my shrink wrap!....I still haven't attempted to set up my first ELRS micro racing drone, being an airplane guy, thus wanting the security of ELRS. Anyway, you do not mention with new receivers of "any" type, placing the LUA script of it into the Tx card tools file. Betafpv, where I got their micro PWM receiver, states to do this. So, do you?
Hello from Spain Joshua. Thanks for the video!!! What sticks of gimballs are those?Could you make a video with the sticks for...(for example) Radiomaster controllers?? I think it would be a good idea. See you!!
This is great was following your perfect build just waiting on motors but I couldn't set my mind to a receiver because I don't have a computer at the moment can you use the app it has a elrs section will that work
@@gregorydahlwell maybe not. In order to flash an frsky r-xsr, you have to use a tiny adapter (if you have a connecter on your receiver, otherwise you need to solder wires) and then you need to plug that adapter into your radio JR bay and make sure that the wiribg is correct. Then you need to put the firmware on your radio in order to flash your receiver. And I don’t even then mention the whole access/accst v1/v2 eu/us mess for the firmware file. ELRS is so much easier
Push button on reciever to go into bind mode, push button on radio to bind, boom...go fly. I have never updated a frsky reciever. If it flies, why mess with something that works great. I am very reluctantly trying elrs. Only because I can't find the micro recievers I like. I would rather fly more than sit in front of the computer more.
you can also use your phone to check the firmware version instead of having 2 wifi adapters and switching back and forth between networks on your desktop
5:47 Does it matter which .bin file you use to update the rx? I noticed you used the firmware.bin file, whereas I've only ever used the one with the name of the rx. All my rx's work great so I guess I've answered my own question... but why the 2 .bin files?
I put all mine to connect to house wifi to use my computer (my wifi burntout on it) but now I can't update outside house. Thinking switching back to 10.0.01
I've flashed ELRS receivers various ways, WiFi, Betaflight passthru and a USB/TTL bridge. Whilst the WiFi approach specified here is undoubtedly very convenient, one thing I've found one needs to watch out for is WiFi range - the tx power from the receiver seems very low. Move the PC antenna and Rx too far apart and it'll lose connection pretty quickly - mine does anyway. It hasn't happened to me yet, but I wonder what might be the result if it lost connection in the middle of flashing. Don't know but suspect one might have to force the Rx into boot mode and reflash with a USB/TTL bridge. Important to make sure the WiFi connection is solid, anyway.
Hi Joshua again!! Please tell me the distance for the ER4? I like this for the small floater planes The radio will select the output for the TX but how far can the ER4 go? Please tell me
I have issues with flashing and binding my new happymodel elrs 2.4 ghz slim pro when I used the configurator I then tried using WiFi to key in the binding phrase that way it reboots but then when I reconnect the WiFi the binding phrase doesn’t save tried for hours last night with no look I have another radiomaster nano and had no issues with this one I downloaded the lua script onto the radio and it all works fine with the nano but not the slim pro don’t know what to do now
I was wondering if you would be so kind to give me the link where you mention the partition file to be installed in the TX module when one have a tx that is still in 2.4 version of the firmware?? pretty please I have spend a hole day lookin and can not find it!! Thank you in advance.
is it okay to update a bind and fly receiver ? I don’t want to risk messing up the settings. at same time I am not too familiar with fpv and trying to get flying soon!
Hey, I have Cinerace20 and I cannot connect with Wifi. Its flashing fast but I do not see it on any device. Radiomaster works good bit Cinarace is not visible and cannot connect:( do you know what is it?

Hello Joshua, first I have to say I LOOOOOVE your videos. I consider it a "Good day" when I learn something. Thanks to your videos I've had lots of them. On to my question... I have a Baby Ape Pro V2. I'm try to set the Bind phrase on the ELRS module. Connecting to the on board Wifi it tells me... From here you can update your Receiver module with BETAFPV_2400_RX firmware Rev. 2.5.2 (6d9d57) ISM2G4 My question is, what should I do? Upon checking in ELRS configurator, there is no exact match for that name. But the Flight Controller and the ESC are both AIO components. Maybe the ELRS receiver is also AIO? Should I try the firmware labeled BETAFPV_AIO_2400_RX?? If it doesn't work, will it be bricked for good?
hello sir, thx for making such a good video. allow me for ask sir ^^ is it possible to binding the elrs tx module with the receiver elrs without using radiomaster remote controll? i have elrs tx module ES happymodel 2.4 Ghz, and receiver elrs epdual. thx sir
Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t you select build, and flash when you are updating your TX/RX through the USB /UART choice instead of Wi-Fi? Thanks for the video.
Hey Joshua I don’t know if you will get this question or not I just got my radiomaster pocket and my baby ape 2 pro and every time I try to flash I keep getting a build error code in express Lrs configurator do you have any idea why ? I’m about to give up any help would be great thank you so much.
Hi Joshua, I have a question no one answers......... Can you change your "pass phrase"? My friend put ELRS on my TX16s, upgraded it to EDGE but I want to change the pass phrase for the ELRS modgule Can you tell us how, I would really appreachate it
btw why I should to turn on my radio (tx) first (then plug the lipo to my kwad) to connect my kwad? how to set like on crossfire (when I plug my kwad first then turn on my radio they can connect automatically)?
If you raise the wifi hotspot timeout, you can extend the time before wifi kicks in to like 10 minutes or some other very long value. But using wifi to configure the system will become difficult since the RX will need to be told to go into wifi mode manually. If you don't have your controller, you'll be waiting a long time.
hi i have a zorro 4 in 1 radio i notice that the relrs adio master has an express module do you have a video that shows how to change the 4 in 1 module to an elrs??
Thank you so much, mate!! This video helped me after few hours of research I wander how i possible know that to update firmware for happymodel esc900rx. First I have to unzip file and then after i've seen "U dont have enought space" error. I should try again with that one unzipped file )))
Im so glad my radio and rx came with 3.whatever, this would of took me forever. Tried to set a bind phrase and kept getting a failed message so i just did the bind process and got lucky lol
When I try to import the new firmware to the receiver, before it can say update complete, the receiver switches back into its initial binding sequence and disconnects from my computers wifi. Im not sure if the issue is my soldering or what, because everything else seems to be working so far... any would be much appreciated.
I just bought the geprecdark star 20 and y cannot flash it. When i tried to do it trough wifi mode, it appears that the receiver is beta fpv 2.4 nano. I dont know what firmware set up, if it is elsr beta 2.4 nano or geprec 2.4 nano as the manual said. What do you suggest?
I prefer to connect with my phone, define my home network, and I then I don't have to bother with connecting to it anymore as it'll just be on my network. ELRS Configurator works exceptionally well that way.
My problem with that is the RX wifi is very short range so it can't always reliably connect to my wifi. It it can always connect to my phone which is right nearby.
@@JoshuaBardwell Ah, this is true. My access point is only about 4-5 feet away from where I do my configuration, so it connects without issue. The PCB antenna on most of these boards just doesn't cut it for anything beyond the room its in.
Will a rx light up if plugged by usb only? I don't have the power lead soldered yet onto the fc aio. But I wanted to c if I can update or check the elrs rx via usb power only.
Joshua, I’ve watched both. I still get some flashes that just fail and brick my RX! If I evened out the money btw wasted rx and crossfire rx it’s prob same price. It prob user error but I’m doing nothing different than you… Update: I watched it in depth (this current video) and realized I may have been trying to flash the other file, not the firmware.bin - does this make sense that I would still at times get successful flashes using that other file labeled “3.2.1” for example?
I have a foxeer elrs receiver I just installed and it is connecting to my RadioMaster Pocket but in betaflight it shows no reaction to stick inputs. RX and Tx are reveresed can you think of anything else it might be?
Hi Joshua. Is it ok to flash my elrs receiver without attaching it to my fc? I'll just power it up with an external dx power supply and do these steps. Would this be ok?
Does each expresslrs rx have a different binding phrase, or do all my rx's share the same phrase? Maybe dumb question, but since I'm migrating over from Spektrum where the binding procedures are different.
If you have a F4 and it seems like you did everything right but it’s not working you might need to use a different UART. I had to swap the RX and my Vista and it started working as expected.
I woudl suggest spending $15 or so on a USB wifi adapter for your computer. There are ways to work around this, but they're a pain in the butt, and it will be money well spent.
But Josh..... by the time you have connected your bluetooth to the receiver, I have already plugged and unplugged it twice, plugged it in a third time and hit 'bind' on my transmitter. Done done and done.
It’s wifi not bluetooth, and this video isn’t just about binding but also flashing. Although what you are mentioned works, using a binding phrase means it just works out of the box. And you will eventually update you firmware. So you just have to do it once and forget about it.
That's fine, but it doesn't work unless you know they're on the same firmware, and these days the RX usually comes with 2.x and the module has 3.x, so you're going to have to flash it anyway.
i was called out for not watching the definitive guide and now... i'm going to watch the definitive guide...

I've given up for now😅 i did buy some normal elrs rx's so ill come back to this once ive mastered the spi based internal rx's first...
No, the definitive guide was great!
I’m a bit confused. There was two bin files to choose from to update the rx. Why not choose the lower one ??
They are identical, just one is named more descriptive. You can pick either one. It doesn't matter.
@@JoshuaBardwell Awesome. Thanks so much. You’re a big help and the reason I can maintain my sanity in this sometimes confusing hobby.
I’m joining your patreon now.
I had a surprisingly smooth experience with elrs spi binding on a mobula6. It wasn't binding probably because the elrs came from factory with erls firmware 2.x
I flashed betaflight 4.4.2, went to the receiver tab, selected SPI and entered my passphrase.... thats it, no wifi needed, no compiling, no need to do anything on the Transmitter.
Same here. Very satisfactory experience
ELRS via SPI is the easiest setup since it's baked into the FC FW. It's almost D8 simple. The UART FC's like the NewBeeDrone are a BAD idea.
Thank you!!
YOU know i am gonna learn how . i cant be stopped . thank you .
I have crossfire and don't need elrs. when radiomaster stops messing around and releases a boxer max I will buy that and probably watch one or maybe even 2 of your many many ELRS videos. jeeze. :)
I got 3 elrs nano and mico modules and 9 rx's . One worked until jb weld doesnt stick the tee antenna to carbon fiber and it shredded in the props . Could not fix the ufl connector . All nine said factory firmware matched but doesnt . Buy a computer and cable anyone ? I learned my lesson . Chasing a more and more expensive carrot no sir every week upgrade videos
Oh I watched the 1st video, still lost! Back for more torture!
Great video thanks JB
Great video JB 😊👍
so If I do not want to flash the firmware, but just want the advantages of having a binding phrase, can I just enter the binding phrase in the 10.0.0.1 web page and save it to the drone and radio that way? [your video at 7:40].
Thank you Joshua you have saved me from spending days on getting my gear running, but I have an issue with a Zorro ELRS TX, it is bound to the RX as it says on the radio when I remove the battery from the RX and when I reconnect the battery it says connected again, on BF I can see that the Roll, Pitch, Yaw and Throttle work but not the switches. I have tried everything but nothing else works. dont know what else todo.. or what direction you can point me. Thank you !!!
Awesome, thank you 🙏
Is there going to be a review on the darwin fpv quad?
I am so new to ELRS, I'm still itching from my shrink wrap!....I still haven't attempted to set up my first ELRS micro racing drone, being an airplane guy, thus wanting the security of ELRS. Anyway, you do not mention with new receivers of "any" type, placing the LUA script of it into the Tx card tools file. Betafpv, where I got their micro PWM receiver, states to do this. So, do you?
I have learned something today
🙂
Great Video as always.
Hello from Spain Joshua. Thanks for the video!!! What sticks of gimballs are those?Could you make a video with the sticks for...(for example) Radiomaster controllers?? I think it would be a good idea. See you!!
This is great was following your perfect build just waiting on motors but I couldn't set my mind to a receiver because I don't have a computer at the moment can you use the app it has a elrs section will that work
Wow, this isn't confusing at all. ELRS really has made the hobby easier to get into than FrSky
😧
You are joking everyone . He is joking .
For me frsky is easier. Bar none . 👍
I love FPV but godam so much to learn 👍🤣
you can also use your phone to check the firmware version instead of having 2 wifi adapters and switching back and forth between networks on your desktop
Awesome vid 🔥
5:47 Does it matter which .bin file you use to update the rx? I noticed you used the firmware.bin file, whereas I've only ever used the one with the name of the rx. All my rx's work great so I guess I've answered my own question... but why the 2 .bin files?
They're identical. It doesn't matter. I don't know why there are 2 of them.
Sweet. Thanks you
I put all mine to connect to house wifi to use my computer (my wifi burntout on it) but now I can't update outside house.
I like this for the small floater planes
The radio will select the output for the TX but how far can the ER4 go?
Please tell me
thnks!! helps a lot !!!!

I don’t want to risk messing up the settings. at same
time I am not too familiar with fpv and trying to get flying soon!
Hey, I have Cinerace20 and I cannot connect with Wifi. Its flashing fast but I do not see it on any device. Radiomaster works good bit Cinarace is not visible and cannot connect:( do you know what is it?
Can i use a happymodel ep1 RX with Radiomaster TX ?
Thanks to Joshua I now have my first 5" quad that I succesfully flew at a farmers field, over the moon...could never have done it without you, 11 hours pre traiing on the lift off simulator game a me a good start to learn this difficlt craft that makes it so much more rewarding when you see something you have built fly so beautifully.
2.5.2 (6d9d57) ISM2G4
My question is, what should I do? Upon checking in ELRS configurator, there is no exact match for that name. But the Flight Controller and the ESC are both AIO components. Maybe the ELRS receiver is also AIO? Should I try the firmware labeled BETAFPV_AIO_2400_RX?? If it doesn't work, will it be bricked for good?
hello sir, thx for making such a good video. allow me for ask sir ^^
is it possible to binding the elrs tx module with the receiver elrs without using radiomaster remote controll?
i have elrs tx module ES happymodel 2.4 Ghz, and receiver elrs epdual.
thx sir
Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t you select build, and flash when you are updating your TX/RX through the USB /UART choice instead of Wi-Fi? Thanks for the video.
Correct. But I"m not flashing through USB/UART, I'm flashing through WiFi.
My friend put ELRS on my TX16s, upgraded it to EDGE but I want to change the pass phrase for the ELRS modgule
Can you tell us how, I would really appreachate it
btw why I should to turn on my radio (tx) first (then plug the lipo to my kwad) to connect my kwad? how to set like on crossfire (when I plug my kwad first then turn on my radio they can connect automatically)?
If you raise the wifi hotspot timeout, you can extend the time before wifi kicks in to like 10 minutes or some other very long value. But using wifi to configure the system will become difficult since the RX will need to be told to go into wifi mode manually. If you don't have your controller, you'll be waiting a long time.
can you help i have a drone with two recivers at the same time and i only wanna use elrs
Your a Trip ( The BardMan himself) .
hi i have a zorro 4 in 1 radio i notice that the relrs adio master has an express module do you have a video that shows how to change the 4 in 1 module to an elrs??
The configurator looks different and every time I try to flash my radio (the radiomaster Zorro) it fails
Thank you so much, mate!!
This video helped me after few hours of research
I wander how i possible know that to update firmware for happymodel esc900rx.
I dont want to show you my bind phrase , keyboard clicking " josh bardwell " 😂,,, I might be wrong , it's just sounds like that and made me laugh.
What do you suggest?
my binding phrase would make a nun vomit, that is the level I am at with my binding saga 😆
Is there any way you could bind an elrs receiver without getting on your computer and doing all this complex stuff?
Yes. ua-cam.com/video/H5OnozIqJCA/v-deo.html
Also in ELRS 3.4, the button can be used to trigger binding.
So there are many ways.
I was about to say the same thing. Then the build and flash button works without any issues
the binding phrase bytes is on display
You should do a video about the repartitioner issue if you have not already. At least a mention of it here would have been helpful to some maybe.
Good point. Here's a link: ua-cam.com/video/2kcRi1cHejM/v-deo.html&ab_channel=JoshuaBardwell
Will a rx light up if plugged by usb only? I don't have the power lead soldered yet onto the fc aio. But I wanted to c if I can update or check the elrs rx via usb power only.
My ISP will not allow me to directly access device hotspots using this methodology. Any way to do this without using wireless?
Joshua, I’ve watched both. I still get some flashes that just fail and brick my RX! If I evened out the money btw wasted rx and crossfire rx it’s prob same price. It prob user error but I’m doing nothing different than you… Update: I watched it in depth (this current video) and realized I may have been trying to flash the other file, not the firmware.bin - does this make sense that I would still at times get successful flashes using that other file labeled “3.2.1” for example?
Either .bin file works, even of you rename them :)
So after both the TX and RX have the same binding phrase, they will get automatically bound when powered up?
Correct.
Yes that's fine.
I’m confused more than ever. I’ve been trying for three weeks to bind my new Boxer to a RP1 RX and it does not work
I always did it that way.
Does each expresslrs rx have a different binding phrase, or do all my rx's share the same phrase? Maybe dumb question, but since I'm migrating over from Spektrum where the binding procedures are different.
You can decide how you want to do that, but typically all your RX would have the same binding phrase.
looks like my drone is not switching into WIFI mode after powering up... any suggestions?
Manually force wifi mode by holding down the bind button for 5 seconds.
If you have a F4 and it seems like you did everything right but it’s not working you might need to use a different UART. I had to swap the RX and my Vista and it started working as expected.
What do I do after I have done this
Pick up here and keep moving forward with your setup. ua-cam.com/video/EDnQEep2X4I/v-deo.html
Can we do like this with AIO FC ? I'd consider use Happymodel X12 or F4 1S 5A FC. I usee tiny
Yes, as long as the ELRS RX is UART-based not SPI-based.
ok so its the 45 minute video i gotta watch now after this one lol
I watched all the videos and I'm still lost why is this so complicated!
I dont have wifi on my computer how do i bind it and update it?
I woudl suggest spending $15 or so on a USB wifi adapter for your computer. There are ways to work around this, but they're a pain in the butt, and it will be money well spent.
Is the password supposed to be different for every other RX that I connect to my TX16, or the same?
All the same.
