So fighting for the bill part - the rule is: (1) everyone appears fighting damn hard for the bill (2) everyone hoping others hold it for one more round of "no you step away let me pay this time" (3) someone fought slightly harder than others would realize he/she will make the pay (4) he will be like "damn" in the heart narrative but pay it rather doubtless (5) everyone others will be like - "it will be definitely my turn in next round" (6) there might not be a "next round" (7) if there is indeed another round, the one who paid last time will fight "slightly less hard" this time.
The scene only happens when it is none-business or none-closest-friends. cuz in business you want to achieve bigger goal by paying the bill. And with closest friends, you know there will be a next round and the favor will always be returned along with friendship.
Make sure you reach for your wallet in the pant pocket at the same time as you are fighting for the bill. The trick is that your wallet is actually in my coat pocket.
I prefer going Dutch. If I have to pay today, I'll tell my friend or friends "next time your turn to pay". But with my girl friend, I always end up paying. Sigh!!
I got a surprising interesting fact for you. If you go to jail as a Chinese for murdering your boss for not paying salary for a couple months you'll only get detained for a few days before released with a mild warning if this was the reason. In this way at least the staff don't get punished for taking revenge when the boss/owner give them a difficult life. If you run a small shop somewhere expect that local police will try to ask for money for "protection" failing to do so can get you pinned down for a crime you did not commit. In my case i had to keep them happy by being their guest in KTV so they could try to impress their dates that they had international "friendship" If you you break any law in traffic have a large wad of cash ready in the car , this way you can bribe officers before the crime has been made official. (I.E) entered the computer system sent to Beijing. Knowing the right people can get you an upgraded visa. Working for the wrong people could result in you not receiving salary upon visa renewal. Some companies have bribed PSB with the salary you should receive in return you never get your passport back nor your visa (that goes to the company owner) Hope this was interesting. You can never expect to become a Chinese national. Getting married there will only give you right to stay not to work. Caught working on a marriage visa can get you barred from reentry for up to 10 years. Most foreigners with Chinese spuses "help" their spuse business when in reality owning and running the operation.
As a people who brith and growing in Hong Kong, I can say that buying pear as a gifts is not a problem. However, if you cut it in pieces. that is the problem. Because in cantonese, cut the pear is 分梨. it sound like 分離 (this word have many meaning, normally us as divorce or break up)
With most dialect in the world (not all), it has minor changes which other dialect speakers will be able to communicate. With the dialects in China, a Cantonese speaking person will not be able to communicate with a Shanghainese speaking person at all if they spoke their native dialects. As a Shanghaiese let me say it's still just dialect. Pronunciation is big difference but Grammar and vocabulary still share the same. Maybe few words are tricky to find a corresponding writing words in Mandarain but this happens in pretty much every other dialects let's say， just like the Pronunciation part.

That's exaggerated. The nearby cities in that area can generally understand each other. It is called "Tai Lake Wu language area", which includes south Jiangsu, Shanghai and north Zhejiang.
Feng Shi I’ve had 2 adult students in my class. When one told me she was local from Taicang and could speak the local ‘Taicangese’ , I asked her to speak it. She gave me an example of it, and my other student who was not local told me, ‘I don’t understand it.’ I don’t understand either, so I’m basing my statement on what they told me. I could make a video on my channel about it to see how it differs from standard dialect.

@yunshen yue spitting in public is also seen as very bad behavior in China. Young people won't do that. Probably only old people in China do that. It is hard to change their habit. I used to discuss with my sister about this. It is known issue in China that there are about 1-2 generation people were supposed to be in school when they were young. but all schools were closed due to culture revolution (1966-1976). education was missing for those (aged around 55 - 65 in mainland China, that explains why you see bad behaviors like spitting in public or so ) I guess it may take another 10-20 years when older generation gradually disappear from public view, you probably won't see any spitting or other bad behaviors in street.
I know 4 languages fluently 🐁 2 are Chinese dialects cantonese and ngai. I haven’t speak cantonese and ngai for a very very long time… >10 years I would be so fluent again if I speak with the native speakers again for less than a year
Thank you for introduce China to the world. Just to be more precise: it is mungbean ice cream, and Chinese New Year does not has a fixed date according to the solar calendar, but it is the first day of the year on lunar calendar, which is believed to be more helpful for agriculture.
Maybe I am wrong but at least relatively young or even my parents generation in/around Shanghai (JiangSu & ZheJiang Province) don't mind number 4 so much, people living on 4th floor (including 14, 24. . . ) with no issue at all. But I did notice when I went to HK and ChinaTowns in some cities like London. Toronto & Montreal (well basically built by early immigration from FuJian or HK). . . lots of buildings don't have 4 related floors, quite shocking and confusing to me (never seen that in Shanghai). And this reminds me some of my friends from HK and TW also have a strong belief in FungShui which is also quite rare in Shanghai, sometimes it's quite interesting to hear them talking about how their family practicing it. Not saying it's good or bad but just a fact how different are the culture even within different parts of China.
The warm water thing is crazy. I live in Shanghai. I remember when I first moved here and I was sitting in bank waiting to be served and one of the bank clerks brought me a cup of warm water. 😊 Also the spitting is unnerving at first especially during COVID-19. But like everything else you get used to it.

Yesterday, I saw three foreign friends filming local culture, food, and architecture in Tibet. After reading it, I was really surprised. Tibet turned out to be a good tourist place. Not as bad as the Western media said. The local people live well. If you have the opportunity, you must take the entire China tour. If you need to learn Chinese, I can teach you. My advice is forget about the tones. Treat them like accents. It'll be easier this way. That's how Chinese people naturally learned to speak. We weren't taught about tones when we were small.

For the gift part,all the 3 items have less auspicious meant homophones. Shoes is 鞋 in Chinese, one of its homophones is 邪, which means evil. the 🍐 is梨 in Chinese and can often be associated with 离, as in "getting separate or parting". 钟，a clock，rhymes with 終, the same end. To gift a clock is 送钟, which sounds exactly the same as 送终: to see someone in his/her deathbed. Actually other than the clocks, buying shoes or pears for someone here is not that uncommon. I for one would love to have a pair of Nikes for my birthday as a gift. As for pears, when you're are eating one, some may advise you against slicing it to share around as the action "分梨" reads the same as 分离. 😂😂
oh i thought the high rise hole floor is for ventilation, so the air of the area would be block by the series of high rise, which is a problem in hong kong here. i m not sure i gota go check now
Funny thing is the more south u go in the eastern side the more it becomes a language rather than a dialect (excluding autonomous regions within mainland🇨🇳）. If u think Shanghainese 滬語 is hard. try 閩南語 Min used in 福建Fujian and 台灣 Taiwan🇹🇼 or 粵語 Yue Cantonese spoken in 廣東Guangdong and 香港🇭🇰and 澳門🇲🇴. These are more like languages due to the characters used does not exist in daily mandarin like 有冇 in 粵語 Cantonese and 袂䆀 or 媠 in Taiwanese Min.

The Taiwanese accent is a dialect of Fujian Province in mainland China, not really Mandarin. After the Kuomintang failed, it brought the accent from Fujian to Taiwan. I think it was acceptable during the olden days because people mostly lived in rural areas. The spit could easily be absorbed into the earth.

The city I’m in (Taicang) has their own local language too. Chinese outside of this city can’t understand it at all.
That's exaggerated. The nearby cities in that area can generally understand each other. It is called "Tai Lake Wu language area", which includes south Jiangsu, Shanghai and north Zhejiang.
Feng Shi I’ve had 2 adult students in my class. When one told me she was local from Taicang and could speak the local ‘Taicangese’ , I asked her to speak it. She gave me an example of it, and my other student who was not local told me, ‘I don’t understand it.’ I don’t understand either, so I’m basing my statement on what they told me. I could make a video on my channel about it to see how it differs from standard dialect.

@yunshen yue spitting in public is also seen as very bad behavior in China. Young people won't do that. Probably only old people in China do that. It is hard to change their habit. I used to discuss with my sister about this. It is known issue in China that there are about 1-2 generation people were supposed to be in school when they were young. but all schools were closed due to culture revolution (1966-1976). education was missing for those (aged around 55 - 65 in mainland China, that explains why you see bad behaviors like spitting in public or so )
I guess it may take another 10-20 years when older generation gradually disappear from public view, you probably won't see any spitting or other bad behaviors in street.
I just find it exhausting.

Dialects in china everywhere is like a language haha. I also went to harbin ice sculpture earlier this year.
Maybe I am wrong but at least relatively young or even my parents generation in/around Shanghai (JiangSu & ZheJiang Province) don't mind number 4 so much, people living on 4th floor (including 14, 24. . . ) with no issue at all.
But I did notice when I went to HK and ChinaTowns in some cities like London. Toronto & Montreal (well basically built by early immigration from FuJian or HK). . . lots of buildings don't have 4 related floors, quite shocking and confusing to me (never seen that in Shanghai). And this reminds me some of my friends from HK and TW also have a strong belief in FungShui which is also quite rare in Shanghai, sometimes it's quite interesting to hear them talking about how their family practicing it.
Not saying it's good or bad but just a fact how different are the culture even within different parts of China.

The warm water thing is crazy. I live in Shanghai. I remember when I first moved here and I was sitting in bank waiting to be served and one of the bank clerks brought me a cup of warm water. 😊

My advice is forget about the tones. Treat them like accents. It'll be easier this way. That's how Chinese people naturally learned to speak. We weren't taught about tones when we were small.

Actually other than the clocks, buying shoes or pears for someone here is not that uncommon. I for one would love to have a pair of Nikes for my birthday as a gift. I studied Chinese 3 weeks. never learned that phrase.
Funny thing is the more south u go in the eastern side the more it becomes a language rather than a dialect (excluding autonomous regions within mainland🇨🇳）. If u think Shanghainese 滬語 is hard. try 閩南語 Min used in 福建Fujian and 台灣 Taiwan🇹🇼 or 粵語 Yue Cantonese spoken in 廣東Guangdong and 香港🇭🇰and 澳門🇲🇴. These are more like languages due to the characters used does not exist in daily mandarin like 有冇 in 粵語 Cantonese and 袂䆀 or 媠 in Taiwanese Min.
