it's kind of funny with the numerous comments saying he sounds psycho or demanding. I think he's conveying the thoughts we all feel when we really like someone, but we know we cant have them. So of course We all sound weird and clingy like this in our heads hahaha.
I disagree with your disagreement. As a (very very very) committed death cab listener who listens to death cab for cutie nearly 24 hours a day (literally) and extreme Ben Gibbard (super)fan, I listen to this song every day and know the lyrics by heart. When Ben says he sees "my reflection in your window as i slowly pass and I long for this mirrored perspective when we'll be lovers, lovers at last" he probably is trying to say that they have liked the person for a long time and never got to be with them, and happens to be strolling by the person's house, walking slowly, probably casully seeing the person and noticing something they have never seen.
I just love the way he puts all these lines.. the words are very elegant. Haha I feel like a stalker would try to impress you with "flowery" language so this makes it even creepier. And of course that a stalker is 100% convinced that you will end up with him. I love it!
I think the reason behind the words being presented so elegantly and the music being so pleasant is because in his own head and many others like him this idea of love is true. They don't realize that it's unhealthy. Basically it means that the stalkers which we are thinking about here are more innocent than we think and the harm they cause isn't actually intentional. They think that they have found true love and will do anything to get it. Still doesn't make them any less harmful.
I have had multiple dental surgeries in ghetto Russian hospitals without anaesthetic. One of these led to an infection that yielded 2 weeks of extreme pain due to a botched root canal. I have undergone recovery from botched eye surgery that felt like a dozen splinters in each of my eyes for several weeks afterwards. I have been through years of daily physical and emotional abuse by peers / family. I have undergone severe opiate and sedative withdrawal to the point of convulsions. None of these ordeals have come close to the awfulness of true unrequited love.
An alt rock radio station in Kansas City has been playing this song on repeat lately and got it stuck in my head. Thanks for making this video a decade ago :)
summonedfairy not really, the human brain is weird. It knows what it wants and it wont stop wanting it, a lot of people dont go as far as stalking but they still have an obsession.
I know what ya mean, but the thing about this song is that it can be taken two different ways. 1. A hopeless romantic who won't give up until the person finally falls for him, or a psychotic stalker that this person doesn't even know exists... Still a pretty good song nonetheless lol
I rarely do breakdowns but I wanted to delve a little deeper into this matter, maybe shed light, from a musicians perspective...for you all to really understand music like this.So lets break the lyrics down, they're abstract so this will be kind of cool. So to understand these types of songs, we cant go in expecting to see the wrong answers but be optimistic and open minded. :) I know for fact this song is not creepy. It is a beautiful piece of art you can read as a love letter or song. Let's see what I see: How I wish you could see the potential The potential of you and me He sees this possibility of an amazing relationship, this is very subtly explaining he sees something special... an infinite potential of sorts, the way he sings these lyrics really give a lot MORE emphasis to the emotion he had behind this as well, you can get the vibe of him knowing this person for a bit, these are his thoughts, every day. It's like a book elegantly bound But in a language that you can't read just yet She doesn't see what he sees, by saying 'it's like a book elegantly blound'' he's essentially saying it's something along the lines of amazing, beautiful and love. She won't be able to decipher it though... it's something new to her. A language she hasn't learned. You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love ~This is where people get confused and consider it a creepy friendzone song. No, we're in a society where that's a thing we tag people with... These lyrics are amazing, this is saying a lot. At this point you can start to vaguely see what this woman is like... He's saying exactly what it is, he loves her and wants to have more time with her to grow them closer together and see it eye to eye. This isn't creepy, this is confidence and sincere. I will possess your heart ~This is an abstract lyric, think about it.. read the three lines like he was singing them and you'll see that this says "I know you'll let me in, you'll see how much I love you"... There are days when outside your window I see my reflection as I slowly pass And I long for this mirrored perspective When we'll be lovers, lovers at last ~Abstract lyrics.. People take this too literal, it's not saying he's sitting outside looking through the glass to see her. That'd be creepy. What is window referring to? Quote time... "Eyes are the window to the soul" ... This is saying he's looking at her as if she was the window to a soul he longs for. It's a life with her, a friendship. He longs for that mirrored perspective, it's like saying he can't wait 'till the feelings are mutual. ~ You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart ~ You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart ~ I will possess your heart I will possess your heart ~ You reject my advances and desperate pleas I won't let you let me down so easily So easily This is simply stating that it's hard to get through to her, but he wont give up. He loves her too much to quit on something he firmly believes in. You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart I will possess your heart I will possess your heart So overall this song isn't creepy, it's confessing a love for someone, hoping that one day they see it the way they see it and love them back. The hardest part is showing that person.
Cody Phoenix I listened to this song all the way through for the first time today and though it would be easy to see as the others, I too understood it from your prospective. All though, the window part had me till I read this and yeah......I feel the same. This I hope, gives people a better take on the lyrics because this a beautiful work of art indeed. Thank you, for your intellect.
Meh, I’m looking at in a different way than anyone else. Looking at it in a way of the lyrics are directed to his soul. It speaks me so much more that way… seeing your own potential, seeing how lovely yourself could be if you just spend some time with yourself and love yourself. Hope that helps. 🖤
"I won't let you let me down so easily, so easily." ok this is the point at which this song gives me a stalker-ish vibe. it's like saying "I won't let you reject me."
in the 8min version. there's a slowly building tempo instrument by instrument.. I've read it symbolizes the steps of the stalker's building courage. it's miniscule in the beginning and overwhelming after he becomes his passion
Feelings tough and not exacting. Difference literal then metaphor. Abstract concept hurt brain in good way. Er ra. Sorry I had a hulk in my throat. What I am saying is at times art is meant to express concepts on difficult subjects. Where it becomes more then interesting is when it can be interpretive rather then literal as to about you thoughts all the more to and for yourself. :)
You know I always took this to be someone who had found a very, very mutual deep love, both physically and psychologically, but for whatever reasons, had broken up. His ex, again for unknown reasons, would never speak with him again, which drove him temporarily insane with grief the need to once again feel what they both shared. I've been there, so it really came back to me when I first heard this song. And yes, we spoke again a few times over the course of the next year or so, but then I never spoke to or saw her again -- ever. And, after 35 years, I've never felt anything like that again, ever. And, that's life, isn't it?
this is a good song. I have known it for a while but only recently I was checking out piano lessons included w/ Garage Band (mac app) and this is one of the songs included in the lessons. Been stuck in my head ever since. Maybe seeing Ben Gibbard singing it in that setting made an impression. Good job Ben.
This is literally a dude saying "No, you'll love me I promise! You just have to stay with me everyday all the time until you have no choice but to love me."
It's confidence knowing what you bring to the table. Internal dialogue shared. Things do take time. So make the most of those moments. And know they can't find anyone better then you. Prove it in those times. They'll go for it I swear.
I am a metal head been all my life slayer, exodus, death, overkill etc. etc. but it is only now that I am older and mature that Ive appreciated all music except fucking rap I will never like it but this is damn good music AWESOME it is intelligent, sophisticated and very technical badass!!!!!
+Ruben Aguilar Phew I thought I was the only Metalhead who liked DCFC. Tough to be honest, I only like this song of theirs. But still they're a good band.
Well Vincent even Ray Charles the black legend of piano an blues said its stupid, its repetitive unintelligent, lude and just plain STUPID sorry man!!!! but most of all theres no logic to it
Where most get confused about the lyrics .. is that they're not mentally equipped to understand that "Lovers" does necessarily mean ... 'Fucking'. And in this case, it doesn't. Otherwise when he refers to the person as, 'Love' ,, he would be referring to them as, "Fuck".
Folding shirts in Express for 8$ an hr. in 2007 in a small town mall wasn't so bad when this would come over the store speakers..best part of work there was this being in the mix. Good times
Wow you shit. Don't jump to conclusions just like that. Where's you analysis of the song? The song is basically saying that a man is desperately trying to confess this love that he has for a girl and he tries and tries but she doesn't get the message. It also goes on with how hard it is to actuality confess. If she gives him the chance he'll "Possess her heart" It just shows how much he cares about the girl. Don't just hate on a song. You have to pay attention to the lyrics. Some of you may see it from a different point of view but in reality it's not that bad of a song.
@@cloud_clod Are you mental? But then again, that's how stalkers twist meanings and try to justify their creepy behavior. The song already says that the girl has rejected the narrator multiple times. Can't he take a hint? Lmao.
Just leaving a comment on every video in my old playlist, and the way I used to relate to this not realising it wasn’t romantical but creepy is really... interesting
It isnt just about the his passion. Look at the choice of words. "I will possess your heart" being the main one. He wants her, he doesn't want her love

I feel like the song talks about self love. Judging from the music video where we see a girl travelling to places alone. And I feel like the lyrics are about spending time alone and loving yourself
This song for some reason reminds me of this abandoned house next door to mine and it creeps me out, no one has lived there in years. Just abandoned, growing grass windowed bolted up. But you see lights from time to time. Creepy. IDK why this song reminds me of it but found out a few weeks ago of this song. I do love the tone though
Not if your feelings are matched by the other's feelings. It's rare, but it does happen. Happened once to me. Yes, it was as good as you dream it could ever be.

No thanks to a tribute I saw, every time I think of this song I think of KITT 3000. TwT Okay, Junior, okay. Quit playing this in my head every time I think of you now. XDDD
driving down the highway at 3 in the morning with this playing is quite centering.
i was lucid dreaming and thought about this comment. it's a very nice interpretation.
At 95 mph ONE MUST STAY CENTERED! I totally concur♡♡
Try the last stand by koda

I disagree. It says I see my reflection in your window as I slowly pass and I'm sorry but that's not normal. That's stalkin.

This song is a true masterpiece. Death Cab hit this one out the park, ran and then caught the ball themselves with this track.
i love you so much for cutting out four minutes of pure anticipation
No there’s a shorter version without those four minutes
this song never gets old. I remember first hearing it
Bro this is perfect for the netflix show, YOU.

great job on the lyrics, i know you didnt make this to show off grammar but in this songs case the commas are very important.
How is this a stalker song? The opening line just might be those most immaculately beautiful choice of lyrics in the history of all of music.
"I wont let you let me down so easily"

Not if your feelings are matched by the other's feelings. It's rare, but it does happen. Happened once to me. Yes, it was as good as you dream it could ever be.

No thanks to a tribute I saw, every time I think of this song I think of KITT 3000. TwT Okay, Junior, okay. Quit playing this in my head every time I think of you now. XDDD
it's bothering me that there isn't a comma before love. ugh. i hate when i get hung up on shit like that.
A comma yes !! , and then should love be capitalized like someone's first name ? As in Gilligan's Island, when Mr. Howell calls his wife "Lovey" ?
