Calamity Jane was nicknamed as such because she was so useful, so good, in a calamity or emergency (or pandemic, I guess). She could be relied upon to be helpful. However, in times when she wasn't particularly needed, she would revert to the sauce.

After this episode I can see Josh just sitting on his couch munching on a boiled turnip now.

I grew up in the Great Plains and "nut fry"s were a common fundraiser for volunteer fire departments and company parties for welding/drilling companies.
So to explain for Emily why some people would get TB and others wouldn’t particularly while tending to those who did:
1) required exposure for respiratory TB infection is 10 minutes within 5m longer if you are further away as the TB bacteria essentially also settles on surfaces (think more like a superfine dust rather than a wet spray like with the cold or flu) so even being in the area sans patient for that length of time without a respirator could cause an exposure risk.
2) latent TB is a thing you can be infected and not have symptoms which was likely for most of the nurses in the sanatoriums, especially if their latent TB was abdominal TB (which was super common thanks to unsafe food practices), also latent TB will not manifest unless something changes like a weakening immune system.
3) some people are also just carriers (so they will not develop symptoms) they will just spread the disease around like Typhoid Mary, or my dad in the case of Smallpox (no he never had it but he was born while they were still immunizing for it and they gave him 5 doses and none of them took (site should have scarred my mom has one too) and that’s how they figured out my dad could be a carrier in the case of an outbreak.
4) surprise! Most healthcare workers are actually colonized by many of the infections we treat (it’s by where I live it’s recommended by the union and our governing bodies to refuse swabbing (for infections not for COVID) for Antibiotic Resistant Organisms (ARO’s) because we’re likely colonized for MRSA, VRE, ESBL, and everyone has C.Diff anyways it’s just when it doesn’t have good flora to keep it in check that it’s a problem. So in all likelihood the staff at the sanatoriums had TB too.

When my mom worked in restaurants in the 50s they put egg shells in the coffee grounds to soften the water, not to filter out particulates. It makes coffee taste better.

Also, Emily, you are correct, tuberculosis is definitely contagious 😂. Typically TB patients in the hospital will be on airborne precautions, which means the patient is put in a separate room with special ventilation if available, and people going in/out should wear N95 masks at minimum. No biggie!😅

You need to cook those turnips with a ham hock or country sausage and it would taste a lot better. The same thing for rutabagas.
People still put cheese on apple pie today. It's not my favorite with a sweet pie, but a good cheddar with just a regular apple is pretty delicious.

Emily's 'WHAT IS THAT?!' was 100% my reaction to Josh's statement about spermatocore
TB is very contagious. Back in the old days they called it consumption. They had whole hospitals just for consumption patients. Even today it happens a lot, especially in crowded low income areas and I know at least in Tennessee if a patient is noncompliant with their treatment, they can & will get a court order to keep them in a medical facility, usually a nursing home or rehab facility under guard until they have completed their treatment which is usually lengthy. At least I know it was still happening 10-12 years ago and I’m assuming it’s still in affect

An appropriate amount.
Grew up working on the family ranch on weekends. Never had rocky mountain oysters, but a core memory for me is legit removing the testicles from a calf and just tossing them behind us. If they happened to hit the fence they would stick so at the end of the day you'd turn around and have a fence post with more than a couple cow testicles hanging in the air like cooked noodles on a wall.
I think the funniest thing in the video was the first wild west pic which is from Sweden

This is nothing to do with the video, but Emily's comment about imagining having a period back then reminded me of a personal anecdote I thought was amusing:
Once, my girlfriend and I had made plans to hang out, but then she cancelled. She explained we had to postpone because, as she put it, her "aunt flo was in town for the weekend."
I, not understanding that "aunt flo" was a euphemism for menstruation, responded genuinely and unironically with, _"Oh, well say hi to her for me."_
