  • Join me for an emotive walk around the abandoned village of Tyneham in Dorset and nearby Warbarrow Bay.
In 1943, approximately 225 villagers were forced to leave their homes as part of the war effort during World War two. The land was going to be used by the military for training purposes. With promises that they could one day return, the people of Tyneham left their lives to help in the fight against Hitler.
Sadly, the promise was never kept and in 1948, the Ministry of Defence forced a compulsory purchase upon Tyneham, all buildings and all land.
No one was ever allowed to return until modern day, where tourists can now visit the old buildings, now, sadly, most in ruin.
Access times to Tyneham are still limited due to much of the land still being used for gunnery practice. Please check online before making your trip.

It would have been beautiful in its prime. The quintessential English village. Thanks for watching 🙂

The original telephone kiosk was destroyed accidentally by a film crew, the one you see is a replica sadly. Nicely presented video, very enjoyable.

I did not know that! How bizarre for that to have happened after surviving potential military damage. Thanks for watching.

Nic thanks for this. I got to say however it is horrible how these people were treated by their own country . They tried to do their part to help and they were betrayed by their own government!
I wonder how many other small villages received the same treatment. Stay safe and well Nic.

Nicely produced, and a good choice of appropriate music (so many videos have the music far too loud, this was just right!👍). It's a lovely place, I was there last year when TVam were filming a piece on it! This was much better!

Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. I was really conscious about making sure the music volume was not too loud as it's a bug bear of mine when I watch videos! Thanks again for the kind comment. 🙂

This was very interesting for me. I had a lot of relatives that lived in Tyneham and the surrounding villages. I even have a map of the Bond family estate showing ground which one of my ancestors rented. One was a gamekeeper for the estate. As far as I remember it was Helen Taylor that left the message saying please look after our village. My surname is also Taylor. One of my relatives visited Helen but they couldn’t find a connection. It would be nice if you could reply, you might have more info.

Thank you for your comment. I'm interested to read about your connections with this fascinating village. There is a very informative website run by those that now manage Tyneham which has information on the Taylor family and Bonds and many others. I'll put the link here, and I hope it works so you can have a good look.
