WALKS IN DORSET at TYNEHAM (THE "GHOST" VILLAGE) & WORBARROW BAY (THE JURASSIC COAST) [4K]

  • This is another video in my series “Walks in Dorset” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I visit the “Ghost village” of Tyneham & the pretty Worbarrow Bay - both located near Lulworth on the Isle of Purbeck (about 10 miles West of Swanage).
My 4 mile circular walk starts at Tyneham which is no ordinary village! In 1943, the War Office gave every householder in the village just one month's notice to vacate their properties & land as the area was to be used by the Army (as a firing range) for the duration of the war. The villages were relocated throughout Dorset - they expected to return after the war.
However in 1948, the Army decided to stay & basically the villagers never returned. The village is now made up of derelict houses, frozen in time, within an active firing range. Members of the public are, however, still allowed to visit the village on certain days (check the Tyneham website for opening times).
So my walk starts with a mini exploration of the village (the car park there requests a suggested donation of £2). Just two of the buildings have a roof - the church & the school (now a museum).
I then head along a gravel track up to Whiteway Hill where I get to enjoy some super views both East & West (including a good sight of Lulworth Castle). I continue along a high ridge towards an Iron Age Hill Fort at Flowers Barrow before taking a very steep descent to Worbarrow Bay. The bay has a pleasant beach but I continue to climb Worbarrow Tout for another spectacular view of the Jurassic Coast.
Logan & I get to enjoy a paddle in the sea before returning back to Tyneham along a gravel track. Just before the car park, we get the opportunity of looking around the “History Barn” - the old Tyneham Farm has been set up to reflect the 1940's.
This is a great walk, albeit undulating (!), with terrific views along with a fascinating wander around the deserted buildings at Tyneham.
XXXX Generally Tyneham is open most weekends (but not every weekend - usually closed at least one weekend each month). It is often open for the 2 weeks around Christmas & is often open for most of August. The website to check for opening times is at tynehamopc.org.uk/visiting-ty...

I was astonished by the beauty of Worbarrow Bay when I first beheld it in my teens in the 1970s. Worbarrow Tout, the chalk cliffs of Flowers Barrow and Rings Hill, Arish Mell, and Mupe Bay with its rocks are forever imprinted on my mind.

Hi Dave, you certainly put in some considerable effort for this video, especially descending that steep path. It was okay for your canine companion with 4 legs. Thank you for the lovely shot of Lulworth Castle. A gentleman who was my 4 x great grandfather, Joseph Towsey, was a stonemason, builder and architect and he worked on its restoration in 1780. He was a Blandford Forum man and his wife Elizabeth Fooks a Lulworth lass.

Such a beautiful place I get so cross when I hear how those villagers were treated. You're a glutton for punishment though as you must have done part of that walk down the hill twice, unless you got Logan to set the camera up!

Yes indeed Angela. Logan thinks it very odd at times when we go up and down the same path more than once!

My gran, Florence Godden and around eight of her brothers and sisters used to go to school there. I believe her school photo still hangs there somewhere (it's the photo where the boy holding the year card sadly drowned soon after). It's a very peaceful place isn't it? Lovely video, thank you x

Lovely video record of Tyneham village. I’ve never been to that area. I had a feeling it was often closed to the public, but I may be wrong. Beautiful spot and Logan almost up to his chest in the sea. We’re on holiday in Derbyshire Dales, so I’ve put the channel on the tv. You might pick up some more viewers Dave.

Thanks Lionel. Yes, the village is only open to the public at certain times of the year. Most weekends (but not all weekends) and most of August & a couple of weeks at Christmas. There is a website with all the opening times - it is still an active firing range for the military when closed for public access.

    • @DaveFord

Hi Paula. Always tricky for me to give a time for a length of a walk as I am constantly stopping to set up / take down the tripod, taking "still" shots with my camera, waiting for the sun to come out from behind clouds etc! This walk is undulating - with the walk up & down the ridge - so is one to take gently anyway & of course you need to allow for "pit stops" to take in the views, exploring the deserted village buildings as well as enjoying that "secret" cove at Worbarrow. I would allow three hours at least. (Hope that helps!). I hope that you have good weather for your visit (remember to check out their website to make sure there is no live firing & the ranges are open to the public).
