Here I am, 9 years after my last comment and this is stil one of the amazing songs and performances I have ever seen, god bless you Neil, you are a genius.

My dear son introduced me to the Divine Comedy back in the mid-90's. And he told me about this lovely classic song too. Neil should definitely be much more famous. He is awesome.
this song is beautiful. such a simple story illustrated perfectly. i am very fond of the way he goes from singing to speaking so easily. makes the performance believable.
I don't know where I was when this song first appeared. I discovered it on Amazon Music last week and have played it at least a dozen times since then. I even played it for my wife this morning via Alexa. 'Alexa, play Our Mutual Friend by Divine Comedy...' She (my wife) loved it too. It's operatic, hypnotic, poignant, humourous (love the nod to Tom Jones - It's Not Unusual') and the waves of different musical strands interweaving throughout and leading up to the dramatic 'last scene' are just beautiful. When I found out Neil Hannon also wrote 'My Lovely Horse' and the theme music for Father Ted, that sealed the deal.
How have I only just found this. Thank you Spotify. It's just awesome. I am the same age as Neil and this just reminds me so much of those nights out in the late 80's trying hard to meet a girl and being so deflated by rejection.....
One of the best songs Mr. Hannos has written. I LOVE the Divine Comedy since those early gigs in the Limelight Belfast at the start of the 90's. They are coming to Barcelona in July and I cannot wait.
Who Is there who hear this song ay this moment june 2020 in pandemic crisis like young like me African who really loves this sound. It makes me chill vibes ☺️☺️☺️☺️
this reminds me of myself teen-youthful dreams about UK. purely british, in my opinion. then there is also something else in this music, a lot of cinema (next to Peter Greenaway) and novels I've never watched nor read
Well said my friend, to hell with those Nazis. This song gives me the goosebumps, it's a modern epic song. I've always picture this song as a crucial moment in my life where she's leaving and I can't say anything at all. I'm just there standing up frozen solid. Therefore I think: "No longer then is he our mutual friend." Thanks for posting this beautiful masterpiece. Mr. Rizo Rossellini
I love Neil's songs and performances... There is something about this particular showing that reminds me strongly of early David Bowie material... Very poignant stuff...
The best song of the last decade! Hearing it with a full orchestra is a mind-blowing and emotional experience. Even JR seems sincere in his praise, I think he actually is a fan.
i agree with you bindybadgey. neil hannon is pure genius as well as jarvis and they both live in paris. i was stoned the other night and watched a hitchhikers guide.... to the end, at the end was neil singing.....
I recommend listening to an entire album. Try Casanova or Promenade. Seriously, he's a great songwriter. Even if you don't go for this stuff you have to admit it.
the new album is equally amazing- for a similarly baroque narrative, check out "the plough". (p.s. though it may seem so, i am not affiliated with the band; i just love it and you will too)
You've made your point. I've seen it already with every Divine Comedy video on You Tube. Can we call it a day now? We get it. You don't like them. Don't need to repeat it anymore.
You said 'when they mercifully disbanded', but I think you will find Our Mutual Friend is from the album Absent Friends, and they actually broke up before this album. Two albums have been made since the group disbanded.

I’ll never grow tired of listening to this song...just perfect
one of the greatest songs ever written
Neil Hannon should be regarded in the highest order as one of the finest song writers of his generation
Yes, and not just his...
Yes
Indeed. I say that he’s “Beatles level” of splendid.
If he were to collaborate with Paul McCartney goodness knows how good that could be.

If you dislike this then you dislike the very essence of great song writing. Neil Hannon is a true genius.
Love the way he gets that Walker Brothers line (and melody) in there on this live version!

On many levels, it takes guts to do what this guy has done.
Possibly the best singer/songwriter perfomring today. This is one of the best songs he does, unbelievably touching and true.

first time I listen to this song and I've fallen in love with it!
same here, I heard it on the radio at work and was instantly taken by the beautiful arrangement and story!
Me too. Offered it up on Spotify and I just fell in love too.
This is an excellent version of a fabulous song. The orchestration is just right, Nymanesque and dramatic. Great stuff! 😀
