Un TRÈS grand artiste. Pas sous estimé du tout . Tous les Grands Chanteurs s'inspirent de son œuvre. Beaucoup de Français en tout cas. Neil est IMMENSE et sublime
If only there were more songs like this , such great story telling. You can almost see the entire night unfold as if really there . Few songs can achieve this , excellent.
Nowadays I think that only Jarvis Cocker and Neil share this beautiful talent of telling little observational stories that develop like little tales or films, something I’ve found only in irish and british musicians through decades
Despite thinking myself a longtime fan of The Divine Comedy, and even slightly being mates with someone who was a sometime member, this song has only properly registered with me today. And this is an utterly, utterly breathtaking version. Wow.
I have no words that could do this justice. I only heard it for the first time three days ago and have listened to it on repeat since then. Wish it was played on the radio more cos I feel sorry for the people that haven’t heard it ❤️
@@Giorgi.Japiashvili for a start, almost the entire song is an allusion to how hannon's character is old-fashioned and not at home in modern settings; building on this, it's also alluded to that the girl has a similar stance (their attitudes to nightclubs and noise, playing 45s, the general almost-chaste romance that they develop). finally, it's alluded that the mutual friend - despite being the kind of person who owns 45s - is less old-fashionedly romantic and/or more sexually forward than hannon's character, and that therefore the girl was never as similar to hannon as we're led to think
I don't know where I was when this song first appeared. I discovered it on Amazon Music last week and have played it at least a dozen times since then. I even played it for my wife this morning via Alexa. 'Alexa, play Our Mutual Friend by Divine Comedy...' She (my wife) loved it too. It's operatic, hypnotic, poignant, humourous (love the nod to Tom Jones - It's Not Unusual') and the waves of different musical strands interweaving throughout and leading up to the dramatic 'last scene' are just beautiful. When I found out Neil Hannon also wrote 'My Lovely Horse' and the theme music for Father Ted, that sealed the deal.
Thw fairytale of music. Same feelings when someone hears it in Spain, in Argentina, in UK. Greetings from Greece. P.S I first heard it 4-5 years ago, still (maybe) my favourite song! Such a melody, so instrumental, all these feelings like you fly, like you are out of your body !
heard this at work unloading a truck ...can't believe I have never heard of this song or artist...brilliant story telling
Love that phrasing of the reveal "no longer then..."
He is a a cunning linguist indeed.
It has like a reminicence of a tango... The vocals of the girl ...Love it!!! The orchestra is Superb ...!
An underrated artist with an underrated song. Neil Hannon: one of the best in the whole pop universe.

This musical masterpiece is surely the work of a modern day Mozart

I am here because I first listened Tom Chaplin's cover of this masterpiece. Now I am hooked ! I want to know more about this composer / group. ❤
Just superb, full of witty allusions and a beautiful tune. I love this guy's music.
Care to provide some examples? Allusions, I mean

Can anyone tell me if the backing singer is Cathy Davey? I always thought she is but I'm not sure now.
