      Hi Lexi! I subscribed. Would you consider reacting to the original 1965 Sound of Music if you haven’t seen it? I consider it a great rainy day weekend movie. And there are plenty of good songs to sing along to.

    The movie isn't problematic, it depicts a problematic situation.

      Yeah sorry problematic was just the only word I could think about while watching some of those scenes. In my mulan 2020 video I state that the original showed those problematic situations in order to show mulan rising above it

      Ya gotta keep it in mind that this movie takes place in Ancient China, as in like (I think) 12 AD or something like that...DEFINITELY out dated ideals about women

      @njfranck 3 роки тому +1

      @@16taysia I think she already made that point ;-). It is human nature to impose modern ideals onto ancient heroes (it does not have to be "ancient"), to make them acceptable, even though it is anachronistic..

    The movie was trying to show the problems of society when Mulan takes place. The things that are problematic were supposed to be problematic because it was commentary on the time period, and was supposed to carry the message that woman can do anything and not to listen to society and what society wants. The problematic things were on purpose.

      I completely agree with this statement after watching the live action of mulan (which I’ll be posting Monday) I have a whole new appreciation for this movie and how it shows mulan a female character becoming strong showing that women can become warriors too and challenging the societal norms.

      Agreed. Plus, as much as it sucks - I feel like we would be doing a disservice to the people who actually did go though it. It’s terrible, but we have to be somewhat honest with the attitude of those times. Not that I’m saying that’s it’s ok.

    Honestly, all the songs in this movie in some way come back to society's expectations. Society's expectations of the soldiers that go off to war, the impossible standards men and women were compared to and expected to uphold. The toxic masculinity and offensive disregard for women's rights/worth played a very important role in showing that those ideas were poisonous and highlighting how Mulan overcame all these invisible enemies. This movie has fantastic storytelling.

He told me that line at the end from Mulan's father to her is his all time favorite from any movie (because he has two daughters himself, plus two more honorary ones in my sister and I, haha). As a daughter, it's also nice to see this specific dynamic in a movie.

    Funny enough, Shan Yu was the only character who didn’t care that Mulan was a girl. When she pulled her hair back to reveal that she was the one who stole his victory, his only words were “it’s the soldier from the mountains!” And then immediately went after her full force without taking her gender into account. He just wanted revenge on whoever killed his army, no matter who that was.

    I love that insult on Chi-Fu in the song "A Girl Worth Fighting For"
    Chi-Fu: I've a girl back home who's unlike any other
    Yao: Yeah, the only girl who'd love him is his mother.

  • @sgauden02
    @sgauden02 3 роки тому +16

    Imagine if near the end, the Emperor gave Mulan a trial by combat, and her opponent was CHI-FU! Chi-Fu would protest saying "That's not fair! I'm no warrior!"
    EMPEROR: (smugly) "I don't understand, Chi Fu. I thought you said that as a woman, Fa Mulan would never be worth anything. If that truly is the case, then you should have no difficulty in defeating her. You're a MAN, aren't you?"
    Chi-Fu ultimately accepts the fight out of pride, and Mulan promptly KICKS HIS ASS until he's on the ground begging for mercy, humiliating him front of all of China! And the last we see of Chi-Fu is of him heading back home with his tail between his legs, stripped of his position, and his dignity.
