  • If it's been a while since you were in school and you haven't seen the type of math tested on the GRE in a long time, fear not. You can still dominate the GRE.
    BUT, you need to prepare for the GRE a little differently. In this content-packed video I break down the three most important mindsets and strategies you must adopt if you want to put yourself in the best position for success on test day as an over-30 test taker. It's a must-watch for anyone who's a little rusty in their quantitative skills -- and frankly, for anyone who wants to learn how to get more right answers more effectively and efficiently on the GRE. Enjoy!

    If you remember that a circle area is πr^2, then you can get it via algebra rather quick.
    If the circle area is A=4a^2π then 4a^2=r^2.
    Looking at the figure, you could mentally figure out that the square can be divided in quarters each having an area r^2
    So, the square's area is 4r^2 or 4(4a^2)=16a^2

    Hi! Just found this, was a little worried about taking the GRE after so many yrs and prefer to have someone explain, then just read a book. 51yrs old...it’s been 30 yrs since undergrad...worked ten yrs at University of Miami, took some classes, and now 16 yrs as a science teacher. My daughter is leaving for college soon so I decided I was finally ready to get my Masters...I just love school! Kinda crazy I know but teaching has become my passion, love my students and want to be the best teacher I can for them. In fact, I often have students sign up for my Full GRE Prep Course just a week or two before their GRE and they get great results. Quality is more important than quantity when it comes to studying for the GRE, which is why an organized course like mine that focuses on the highest-yielding strategies and content areas is so useful, especially if you're on an accelerated timeframe. I am 46 years old and just retired from a career in law enforcement for 20 years. I would like to pursue an MBA as well as a law degree and learned that many law schools are now accepting the GRE in lieu of the LSAT. The quant is definitely my concerned!

    • @DominatetheGRE
      @DominatetheGRE  3 роки тому

      Yes, that's correct. But before committing to the GRE, I would confirm that the school(s) you'll be applying to do in fact accept the GRE in lieu of the LSAT: www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/about/law. But then yeah, most students find the GRE to be a little easier than the LSAT -- even if math isn't a strong suit for you. I'm confident our courses will help you master the quant side of the GRE and get the score you need. I hope to have the chance to work with you! (And if you end up having to go with the LSAT, we've got you covered there, too: www.dominatetestprep.com/lsat)

      Awesome, glad you found us! Did you take the GMAT for your MBA? I'm sure you'll be able to pick up the GRE quickly. 10 days isn't a ton of time, but I had a student boost her GRE Quant score 8 points in just 5 days with my course recently, so a lot of progress can be made in a fairly short amount of time. I'm taking the GRE as it is required by most business programs. Have not taken the GMAT and only took GRE once, and didn't score high enough for paid grants, scholarships, etc. So, I'm trying at it one more time in hopes of scoring better. I've been accepted, but am required to pay 100% of costs, obviously, a small investment to retake and be better prepared this time around is well worth the dividends thereafter. However, it's unfortunate that I can't afford even your minimum cost right now considering my poverty level. Moreover, yes, your course is fairly affordable and would highly recommend anyone to seek your work for improvement considering all other programs available---you are very affordable in comparison. Again, the problem is me---I'm not financially suited for such benefits, hence, neither have I been thus far in this journey is why my struggle is so surreal, but I'm not complaining b/c I know other students with less opportunities and more struggles than I, therefore, I'm thankful for where I'm at currently. Thank you. Jerry

    Question regarding the quantitative comparison in the second part of the video.. doesn't "Sum" imply addition? I still got the practice question correct because I added the average with 50 instead of multiplied it. I was under the assumption if a question asks for "product of a number" that means to multiply. - thank you for this vid!

    • @DominatetheGRE
      @DominatetheGRE  3 роки тому

      Yes, "sum" does mean "add." What I'm doing, though, is that instead of wasting time adding a bunch of big numbers, I'm reasoning my way to a right answer by thinking about the sum differently. Let's create a simpler version to show you what I'm talking about. What is the "sum" of 5 + 5 + 5? It's the exact same as 3 x 5! So you can either add all of the 5's together, or multiply 5 by however many of them there are. That's what I'm effectively doing with the larger problem here, and that's why multiplying ends up getting to the same answer faster than adding.

    First - First first ever!!
    I'm 41yo taking the general test next Saturday (30th). I took the Biology subject test last Saturday. I had been teaching biology, chemistry and physics that last 11 years. After my masters in 2004, I started teaching because I was broke and had a ton of student debt. I figured I would teach a few years until I was more financially stable. Then my wife got pregnant I kept teaching.
    I took the GRE in 2006 cold without any preparation and did OK. Now 11 years later I have to do it again. My biggest concern that is my practice score was good (verbal 160/quan 158). Now I feel I am getting a false sense of security. What if it was a biased sample of questions - ones I just happen to know? How many obscure words do I need to know? What If I got the math problems correct doing it the wrong way? I'm too old for this shit

    • @DominatetheGRE
      @DominatetheGRE  6 років тому

      Thanks for sharing your story. What degree are you going for this time? And was the practice test you took one of the free ones from ETS? If so, you should view your 160/158 as a pretty good sign. Obviously you won't see all of the same questions on the real thing next Saturday, but it still gives you a pretty good idea of your current quant and verbal abilities. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

      I took the GRE and got 157/158. I'm slightly annoyed by the process. They really make you feel uncomfortable with the level of "security". I have a little sinus congestion and I had to ask them for tissues. I didn't even want to leave during the 10min break. I also messed up the second essay accidentally deleting part of a sentence with time expiring. My goal was 160/160+. If I got lower (150/150) then I would definitely retake it, but here I am close and I'm wondering if it is worth the time and money.

    • @DominatetheGRE
      @DominatetheGRE  6 років тому

      I'd say the answer to that question should be dictated by the admissions requirements/expectations of the school(s) you're applying to. If 157/158 is within their 80-percentile range of accepted scores, then apply with it. But if it's below what they expect, then take it again. Give your frustrations, it seems reasonable to expect that you could improve before the next attempt -- especially if you beef up a few of your weaknesses (we can help). But no need to invest the extra time and money if your current scores are good enough. A quick call to the admissions office(s) of your target schools (or visiting their websites) would be a good next step.
