Could you imagine a 10 story building downtown in a major metropolis full of a vertical farm. You could sell your produce to every single store and I bet that stores wouldn't have to change the price seeing that they would cut out all the shipping cost. Then again I'm not a logistics major nor do I work in supermarkets but it sounds feasible to me.

This guy is against because of the high energy consumption, but what about the energy saved by growing food locally , no long distance transport needed, and it's freshest, i'm in NY and some of the vegetables and greens i buy comes from all the way in California, how much energy is spent doing that, plus the fact that this food can be grown all year long , pest control, weather damage , etc etc etc ...and the energy consumption could be mitigated by solar panels or something...

This way of producing food has so much potential in terms of being more sustainable. If you power this with solar or wind, this has the potential to save a lot of emissions caused by shipping transportation.
Also, it has the potential to be more gentle to the big marine mammals who is really suffering due to the intense ship traffic related to transportation of agricultural products produced in foreign countries.

most areas where people live in are near oceans and sunny areas where sunlight is abundant with also having the option of creating geothermal plants in any area nowadays.

@@jaredthelifeguard9865 Transfer of light via fiber is usually done for low power applications. You can get it done for high power applications but that is VERY costly. Fiber optics for this sort of application runs into problems with costs and replacement costs as fiber is very frail compared to traditional wires. Just like much of the Green Industry - full of barriers due to costs. Before things find acceptance and usability the cost factor has to come down greatly. Nobody is going to pay $7 for a cucumber grown indoors vertically! Smaller scale farms is where this vertical farming is going to flourish but not totally indoors for sure. Farmers themselves can earn a good living off of their labor but for the corporate farms it has to be of substantial size, full of part time workers receiving little to no benefits other than a pay check and not chock full of the latest high tech and unproven strategies that people would "like" to see implemented that are prohibitively expensive. Subsidies are not the way to go either!

Also the single use plastic packaging is a big issue, that you don’t get with local independent Greengrocers where u buy the veg/salad loose and use a paper bag if needed. One last thing, I noticed no mention of where the nutrients come from or what they are made from. We as consumers are chucking away down our sewers and in landfill sites all our nutrients instead of using local veg waste etc to make Liquid fertilisers. So chucking nutrients away to be replaced with manufacered nutrient mix’s.

If you think this vertical farming is about the future or any other dreamy goal, think again. The only reason this is done, is pure greed. Money money money, that's all on their minds.
Every time and again it's the same pattern. step 1: Invest big, produce big, sell low. step 2: put local farmers out of business step 3: increase prices. Be very wary of banks like goldman sachs in this respect. I've seen it happen with dozens of small scale stores being put out of business by large scale mail order warehouses. It's just sickening to be honest.
Small scale, garden type farming is the way forward if you ask me. Low impact on environment, local production, local customers, less "tweaking of flavor". I could go on, but I think I got the point across.

This is the future of farming. I also think the negative guy is over blowing it. The money saved no pesticides and crop rotation would offset electric cost plus adverse weather conditions that could destroy a crop. So not only are you boosting efficiency by growing faster and better product but also can do it year round because it’s not seasonal so you can make more and sell more which equal more profit. Traditional farms have horrible runoff and can only go wide. You could make giant hydroponic grow towers that are wide and tall that can put produce many farms. The reason for this is the market. Greens are simply the most profitable at this point and since a lot of start-ups are typical profit-orientated businesses they simpyl follow the market.
Cucumbers, squashes tomatoes, egg plants are not really a problem. But the profit margins are much lower at this point. But with more products we will also learn more about how to better grow them and maximize efficiency.

What's funny is that people just assume that because these innovations aren't perfect immediately, that they will never get better and replace the broken systems that we currently have. I remember the argument about how expensive wind energy was here in the UK, it is now the cheapest form of electricity production and is getting cheaper. Battery tech again is not far behind. Yes the first vertical farms are not perfect, just as the first airplanes, the first cars, the first computers, the first mobile phones were not perfect. Vertical farming will be a critical part of our future if we want to feed as many people as possible, making the biggest profit possible, protecting the environment as much as possible.
