So I had to take the fiddle apart to fix an issue I had with the top blowing in and the bottom plate bowing out, I added a 1/8th thick piece of mahogany across the bottom plate and also a small patch under the bridge to keep the sound post from punching through and give some more support. a surprising outcome to this is the sound got better and the A string does not squeak as easily and I can play more in the middle instead of on top of the fingerboard to keep the evil squeak away lol. I did update the build blog on my website so if you build your own its on there with pictures.

Just gotta say this has been a fantastically useful tutorial for me. Nearly done building my own and it’s turning out fairly well so far with help from your plans. Thanks so much for all the great info!

Thanks so much for this video! I’ve just completed my 47th CBG. But I’ve been asked by a few people to make a cb violin.
I’m gonna give it a shot!
    Thanks again!

A tip for your templates: put a line a convenient length next to the shape of the neck and label it with its length, so you can verify that it's printing to the right size. Plus, combining the sound holes with making a waist for bow clearance was genius.

That's a good idea, I just checked it with a measuring tape, going to add that to the downloadable one, and thank you.

Instead of a drawer for the desk, the carpenter decided to make a violin. Now he considers himself a musical master.

I like it. You cut the bridge and nut slots to deep. Strings set on, not in. Sure you have fixed it by now. Nice build.

woodglue aint as permanent of a glue as a lot of luthiers would suggest. There are literally tons of examples where instruments parts joined with titebond comes apart if u want to. just saying.

Yep, you can use the same posses as if it was hide glue (might even do it on this build to make it no longer have an opening back), just a warm dull thin knife thing. planning on building more traditional violins next year and been doing lots of research. will probably do a combo of tight bond original and hide glue.

Hey sir I’ve tried going to the plans link and I can’t get the link to work. Let me know how I can access them or if they are no longer available.
    Thank you!

Violin built in with fine tuners but they’re gone LOL

Didn't need them with the guitar tuners on the headstock. I did keep one on the E string but it doesn't even need that.

Use a real cbox next time or just call it a box 🎻

I wanted to have as much control over the build as I could since I was also making plans for the build (which can still be downloaded). I was hoping that with the plans someone could use any box they wanted with little alterations. That's why I decided to make my own box, also the box I made still opens and used parts from a cigar box like the hinges and the closing locks, even the construction is the same as many of the cigar boxes I have cut apart, with the box joints for the sides and the way the tops and bottoms are glued on.

It's difficult to find cigar boxes of the right dimension if you want the fiddle to be the right size so it's better to make one of the right dimensions if you want it to be easier to play.

Build a 10 dollar violin using 100 k tools.... hmmm...

    • @HiltsyAdventure
      @HiltsyAdventure  6 років тому +5

100k in tools lol, the most of my tools are either vintage/used from garage sales or harbor freight. and I have been putting together my tool collection for over 20 years. My total cost of the violin was $83 and it sounds better than the cheap $100 violins from Amazon and has more character. If you don't like it then don't build one (which can be done with hand tools, not just my "100k" tool setup)
