This backpack is big enough to fit a laptop and it a nice casual backpack with high versatility.
It isn’t a hard project it will just take some time since the backpack is quite big. You will need the most basic leather working tools: (something to cut, a hollow punch, needles, thread and not much else ).
DIMENSIONS:
40/30/12cm or 15,8/11,8/4,7 inch
MATERIALS:
1 sqm of oil-tanned leather 2.4-2.6 mm
0.3 sqm for the contrast leather
4-4.5 mm veg-tan (be sure to have the length for the straps)
ACCESSORIES:
Roling buckles: 1 x 20mm, 4 x 25 mm
D-Rings: 2 x 25mm
1mm waxed thread
Fenice's edge paint
Hello, we are Vasile and Pavel and today we are going to make this backpack.
After checking the calibration page, start by cutting the dashed line where the pages combine. Combine the papers using the corresponding letter and number which will come in pairs. Using the combined patterns, split the leather into smaller parts which are easier to work with.
Using a big hollow punch I am making some holes to help with taping the pattern to the leather. When I know I will punch many holes I like to tie the punch to my hand, this will mitigate most of the tension in the hand.
Another neat trick especially while punching through paper or glue is to use a cheap paraffin candle to lubricate the tip.
Always use a metal ruler, never a plastic one because the blade can easily go up on the plastic and then on your hand.
Finish the main leather parts if you are doing like me, using two types of leather and then the other ones.
If you are using an edge paint or burnish the edges, do it now, before stitching. I am using Fenice’s Edge paint but other brands of similar quality are around.
I applied some glue to the leather before, so after I put the buckle and the loop they will remain in position for stitching. I will stitch the lateral piece to the frontal pocket now.
Now the cover of the bag and the closing strap. This type of stitching is done with only one needle.
Now the buckle. It is also smart to help the leather to bend to your will, before stitching, it will look better and be easier to stitch.
Stitch the pocket to the frontal piece. Buckle parts now.
I am using the markings from the pattern but punch the holes through both layers of leather to save some time.
Now it is time for what I call “ The flaps ”. This is optional, only if you use two kinds of leathers like I am.
I hope you enjoyed our video!

It is a very beautiful work! congratulations! do you glue two leathers together for the straps?
it depends. If you have a 3-2-3.6mm firm contrast leather, you can use it as it is. If you don't have it, you can line to obtain the same consistency. I line a lot because in this way I can control better the consistency.
@@VasileandPavel Ok thanks! Is it wrong if I do it with 2mm leather?
@@juanvictormendoza1185 no, it's ok but line the contrast leather with 1mm leather, suede or pig skin.
@@VasileandPavel Thanks!
the best part about being handmade is that they are all masterpieces
Thank you!
That is true quality & craftsmanship that dude is a freakin artist.... I'd rather get this over name brands like Louis Vuittons, coaches & Gucci everytime, name brand you just buying the name they way overpriced & with that money you can get this handmade from someone like this guy. 🤙👏✌
Thanks
I try always to do my best but the brands you mention are huge, they KNOW EVERYTHING and they have incredible workers.
For sure this will be my next project, the previous backpack pattern I bought from you was awesome, keep on doing this, you are awesome!
Thank you! You can showcase your creation on our Facebook Group: facebook.com/groups/leatherpattern/
Not gonna lie when this beautiful backpack gets some age and patina is gonna look amazing
I like your makeshift stitching pony. Great idea. I’m sure I will use that. Thanks.
You are welcome!
I love the contrast between the 2 different leather..nice bag indeed.thanks for sharing.
I love every single part of it!! It's just beautiful!
Thank you!
That was a very satisfying video to watch...I've done a few small leather items, wallets, belts, etc. but, never anything as nice as this...it is inspiring and has me thinking that I'd like to make one. Thank you!
Thank you for your kind words! We hope you decided to make the backpack!
love love this bag and your technic , absolutely stunning.
That layout looks familiar, making bags this size can easily eat up a side of leather fast ,great bag and tutorial
When I put on ma leather, and rock to sum Metallica, Delta Parole, Foo Fighters or the Smashing Pumpkins I feel like I can do anything in the whole wide world.
Clean, yet rustic. Such a nice backpack.
thank you. I like this one, too. I made a lot of versions, small changes on details.
Спасибо за лекала рюкзака. Сшила в сочетании черного и бордо. Получилось прекрасно. Очень подробные видеоуроки и качественные выкройки!

Крутой рюкзак
I was looking and looking, I knew I saved your video, but had to skim through a bunch. I was trying to find that guy that punched all his holes with a hole punch, instead of using a pricking fork. And now I found it. I am giving up on the those forks, cause the holes are so small, and I end up using needle nose pliers to pull the needle and thread through the holes. And if I am stacking patterns, and punching through 3 layers, the holes always end up jagged and not matched. I think your method is the best, as the holes are well defined and clean, and using patterns insures the stitching will look excellent. Just my two cents, I'm an amateur working my way up to becoming more professional. Thanks for the video.
Buy, wuta 1.5 mm hollow punch, use a 1mm polyester thread to stitch, If you are US there are some at 0.92 mm from Maine thread company, its expensive but awesome thread. While punching holes always use a compass or some tool to mark a line from the edge and while placing the tip of the punch look to keep it in the middle of the line. Use leather with some kind of rigidity to it and it will be a good start.
You are the master ♥ I am working on a pair of thigh high fairy boots, with a pair of footbeds that I took off of a pair of Birkenstocks. I hope that they will be crafted at least 1/2 as good as your work ♥

Beautiful work. Im in the process of designing a simple day pack, and having trouble deciding how i wanna attatch the shoulder straps at the bottom. I know im gonna use slide buckles, but decide the rest
Nicely made ,well crafted

Great project and great video!! Congratulations!
thank you
very perfect leather work
tnx for video🙏
Very neat work,
Thank you
Thats an amazing work! Really impressed.
Thank you!
Thank you for the video ❤
Excelente! Muchas gracias por compartir.
when I use masking tape - it takes up the top finish from the leather when removed. How do you avoid this? Thanks.
my masking tape is not a strong one, i always succedeed in cleaning it.
Excellent product, watching with infatuation
Thank you!
Love if I could see how you cut those inside curves. I struggle with that.
I cut a lot, i think i cut an our each day since 1988 :)
yo that bag is perfect. it looks expensive tho.
I'm not a leather worker, but this is really nice Buddy....given the current world crisis, when it's over, do you export and if you do I'd like to have one please.
Sorry for the late response. Yes, we sell all over the world.
For the lap top pocket, would goat skin at 72mm be strong enough?
How cool was that...love it.
Thank you!
really great work and channel... but i really want to see a video on the mask its in profile photo and on the full face mask...
hope you guys make videos on them.. Great work.
Perfect!
I really love this pattern and your work. What do you think of making it with vegetable tanned leather?
Veg tan leather is good, just get the proper thickness and rigidity
How many millimeters is the thickness of the leather?
Great looking bag. New sub! Cheers.
Thank you!
Hi, I bought your pattern of this backpack, but there is no the “flaps” part? How I can do it?
Sweet👍👍👍👍
Stitching hole size 0.05mm sir?
That is so awesome 👌
thank you
I love this backpack, but will it fit a 15" laptop inside?
Yes, it is big enough.

40/30/12cm or 15,8/11,8/4,7 inch

Hell yeah!
I've been looking for a hobby lately, I work with horses and when I'm home I'm bored, thought about wood working or something along the lines, but I really want to give a try with working with leather. Any tips on how best to start out?
there are many answers to your question. My advice is to buy a set of esential tools, not many but they have to be good quality tools, otherwise they will make your life a hard one. You need a cutting tool (I use olfa cutters but there are many other good tools), metalic ruler, a good table with a cutting board (find one from industry), a good punching board (from industry), good round punches (or pricking irons) and you need to stitch, so you'll need thread and needles. About the leather... hmmm, I am lucky, i find in Bucharest all sorts of leather so I learned leathercraft on cheap leather, i hope you'll find something similar. And many-many tutorials, watch them and choose what suits you. And something very-very important: you can make mistakes, no one will blame you.
So cool! what program do you use to make our patterns?
Thank you. We use AutoCAD.
Hi. Amazing video and work. what kind of software do you use to create the projects?
Hi. I used AutoCAD.
@@VasileandPavel thank you so much 😁😁😁
Just a tip guys, remove the background song and record the whole process in a quiet room. Also add “ASMR” to the title and you’ll get more views because there is a niche for like handmade stuff and ASMR.
thanks. We'll try
Where can I buy a backpack like this?
Greetings. If I may ask, what size should the stitch punch be for this bag? I estimated around 6mm.
yes, it's 6mm
Great video and design! Just ordering my buckles and metal parts just now. Do you think I could use 2mm leather for the backpack or is that too thin ?
2mm stiff leather is good enough but line the contrast leather, the straps needs to be 3.4-4mm thick. Join my FB group and ask there what question you want, I can answer private and if needed, we can wideochat
@@VasileandPavel thank you for your answer :) I will do that and definitely get back to you with some more questions probably. Thanks a lot!
What size hole punch do you use?
1.5mm
Very cool 😎
Very Nice bag. Did you use suède ? Can you make suède waterproof ?
no, it is not suede. I use suede only for lining but not for this backpack. This is a pullup that is often used to make insulated boots. I can't make waterproof suede but sometimes I buy that type of suede which is made like this in tannery. It is used for protection equipement
@@VasileandPavel thanks for the information, have a Nice weekend
Hi! I just purchased this pattern, it's awesome! I was just wondering what the spacing is between the punch holes in mm? I'm debating on whether to punch holes or just use diamond stitching chisels. Thank you!
Hi. Usually i make holes with a 1.5mm round punch. The distance between holse is 6mm but not everywhere, sometimes is 6+ or 6- mm. I have a few patterns with 5 mm between holes but i use the same 1.5mm round punch. My thread is 1mm nylon waxed thread
@@VasileandPavel Hi. It looks wonderful. I think this is gonna be my next project. But I have 2 mm round punch. Is it ok to work with it or should I buy a 1.5 mm punch? Thank you.
it's better to use a 1.5mm round punch with 1mm waxwed thread. You can use 2mm round punch with 1.2mm waxed thread but you have to know that almost all the patterns ask for 1.5mm round punch. Buy more than one punch and buy punches with long active part. They don;t have to be expensive punches, Wuta is perfect for the job and one punch is arround 7$
@@VasileandPavel understood. Thanks for fast answer.

So is the single hole puncher better than lets say hole puncher with many heads im tryingn to get into it but is it necessary to use the single one first?
i m used to make holes with a single punch. Punching the holes for a project means a small procent of the work so if i'll use a tool with 5 punches, i;ll gain only a few minutes. And when i started leathercraft, i didn't find any other type of punches.
Sinabroks make an excellent pricking iron, lots of different sizes and option, I believe you can get them up to 12 punches per iron, it would save considerable time and it’s easier to get a straight stitch
Oil tanned leather - that means leather that was tanned with vegetables and then oils, or what exactly?
I am not an English native speaker, that's why such a question that may be clear for others, thank you for explanation :-)
i bought this leather under the name "oil tanned leather". It is a leather for heavy boots. My problem with english is as yours :)
@@VasileandPavel Thank you very much for the answer. Good luck with your projects!
How do you burnish oil tanned leather?
i don't burnish it, I dye it with edge dyes. I use Uniters, but Fenice, Giardini or Kenda Farben are also good (and I think there are many other good edge dyes)
I am interested in this pattern, but need more photos expecially the insides. Thanks
there is a big laptop compartiment, you can see it at minute 11.47. Sorry, i already sold the backpack but my interiors are simple, with envelopes and this type of compartiment (the one at the 11.47minute). I have a Instagram page, @vasileandpavel
Where can I buy a cast iron holder downer?
i have a friend with a forge, he gave me those pieces of steel
Please change the music into something peace and calm like natures music
Can we sell the final product?
yes
@@pavelvasilache6111 wow amazing :) i will probably customize it a lot and probably use the base to build on but this is amazing thank you for making this :)
yes, please. The pattern is mine, what you do with your materials using my patterns, is yours. Sell many objects and come to buy another pattern from my shop :)
At 8.57 in video...what tool is that?
a small plier, I bend that gusset with it
How long does this take you to make 🤔?
after the pattern is ready, it takes me 12-14 hours but I am fast, I started leathercraft in 1988

How do you do the straps? You never showed any of it and the pattern has extra pieces and is missing the flaps. Disappointed
my table is not big enough for filming a long strap but they are on my pattern and they are simple. I made the flaps after i made the tutorial but they are not mandatory and thay are also simple to make. I'll make them, i'll modify the pattern and i'll sent it to you
Never skive the grain side of the leather. Always to flesh side.
i did as you said (my leather was lined to obtain 2.4mm thickness)
