Appreciate your post, mechanic here and first shifters of this model. So spring from heaven tormented me with a thread and two hours of explosives... It think the tiny exit hole on the lever is actually to put a rod through to hold the spring in somewhat alignment. As I realized the whole mechanism was fairly shot and seemed pieces were missing I went for a ride and told the customer would need to purchase new levers..🧑‍🔧

There is a special place in hell for the engineer that made that front lever hidden spring. I've been trying for hours to place it on a tiagra 4400 shifter with no succes

For sure. Especially on a piece that can sometimes require replacement.

You must understand that they do not want you to try and fix it. It's planned obsolescence. It's meant to last a while and then stop working

I had the same struggle when I was also reassembling my Shimano Tiagra ST-4400 shifters for the first time.
Then out of frustration I discovered a technique of placing the spring onto the tab.
To do so, use a string (not a fishing line like on this video), tie it on the bent end part of the spring and pull and guide it to the tab that holds the spring. Might take a bit of struggle but it makes the job a tad bit easier.
I've disassembled and reassembled my Shimano Tiagra ST-4400 shifters 3 times. First one was to completely clean it and replace the worn plastic bushings that is responsible for the braking function of the shifter (the pin that holds the shifter mechanism to the shifter body slides onto it), second was replacing one of the broken spring with a custom one, then recently the third one was to replace the replacement custom spring that I have installed with an another stiffer custom spring because the first one was not stiff enough and it has affected the shifter's ability to downshift.
      I hope this helps.

Hi, good idea with string, didn’t think it would be strong enough, hence the fishing line. I’ve since been using a piece of flat gauge metal plate. with one end bent to hook the spring. It’s been working well

just did it using a piece of dental floss that I tied around the hook (tried a string as well but it kept ripping). There is now a small piece of dental floss living in the shifter forever, since I am never going to do this again and was not able to get the last bit of floss out and decided to just cut off the ends and leave the rest in there 😂
      Hope this helps anyone

interesting! may i ask - is there any way to adjust the distance of the lever to the shifter body? so it can be used more easily by smaller hands. thanks!

Massive video, nice work! - But, do you know if its possible to adjust reach on SHIMANO ULTEGRA 6500 levelers?

I have a Ultegra 6500 system from a bike that's been sitting in a basement for almost 20 years, and it is not "grabbing" the gears when I try to shift, so I think I will have to get in there and loosen things up.
Can you tell approximately what size socket I would have to get to make the special tool? I couldn't find it on the web, so I was think of filing a regular socket down myself.

You can try with nose pliers first. It might not be too tight. From What I recall, about 8mm

It is; it's part of the Shimano Flight Deck bike computer. It was a very basic computer that competed with the likes of Cateye and Trek computers with the only advantage being you could press the little buttons on the STI shifter hoods to cycle through the modes (speed, distance, cadence, etc.). GPS enabled apps like Strava and Apple Fitness have made bike computers pretty much obsolete.

It's a sensor for the Flight Deck cyclocomputer that came with the shifters. The purpose of it is to detect what gear you're in and display it on the cyclocomputer.
