Hmm, it seems odd to think of Douglas Fir as a type of pine. Here in the Pacific Northwest, it was common in the old days to have oak on the first floor (where company would see the floors), and then doug fir (which was cheap) upstairs in the bedrooms. I installed doug fir throughout the living room and kitchen in 1981. It does dent but doesn't scratch easily, and has held up well.
We went with hard maple floors with just a Bona Traffic finish. Best wood floor we've ever had. White oak is very nice too but $$$$ for rift cut. Our floor guy said they won't install any wood floors greater than 5" widths and even then, they will only glue down along with nailing. Wider than 5", they've seen too many floors cup with call-backs. Note, that if wood floors are new to you, be careful about guests coming over with high heels, like stilettos. You'll see where they walked long after they've left.
Hint, to avoid splotchy pine finishes: Do a prewash with bullseye shellac, thinned 2 to 1 with alcohol, then fine sand, 200-grit, to remove any nubs, and do another coat with the shellac. Pretty much all finishes can then be applied over the top with great adhesion, and no splotches.
I chose 6.5 maple plank because of the way it looked. So glad your videos helped me understand the most typical wood floors.I don't want it to yellow!! I have to ask them what the finish is.I think vid said water based i'll have to listen again.
Why come you never talk about bamboo hardwood floors? Are they not a good product? I would like to know ? I would like to know about bamboo hardwood and bamboo laminate? I value your opinion .

Thank you so much - I was wondering about hickory, and this has confirmed I should go with oak (probably red oak, but maybe white oak).
